26th of May Update & Review (CLOSED MEMORIAL DAY, MONDAY)

26th Of May 2011 Update of New and Key Restocked Items
at Redscroll Records

NOTE: WE WILL BE CLOSED ON MONDAY (MEMORIAL DAY). HAVE A NICE PICNIC! (CAPS LOCK MEANS THAT I MEAN BUSINESS!)

Note 2: There will be even more showing up on Friday, but that will have to be on next week's update. Beat the update and check in at the store yourself (we get deliveries every weekday so really this goes for every weekday.)

Note 3: This is a day early (and with only one review by Sean) because both Josh and Rick will be attending Maryland Death Fest for the next few days. Sean will be at the shop for the weekend. Business as usual. The twitter account will probably have a lot of MDF related things for the weekend (and perhaps the blog and facebook as well - we pollute the internet daily).

Iron Lung / Mind Eraser / Hatred Surge / Scapegoat
Brutal Supremacy 2x7”

(our copies are actually on black vinyl)
 (Painkiller Records)

Brutal Supremacy is a double 7” compilation that showcases the works of Iron Lung, Scapegoat, Mind Eraser, and Hatred Surge. All of these bands play a similar type of fast and brutal (as stated in the title) hardcore, but each with a very unique sound. When I first saw the cover of this I instantly thought of the “Reality #1 #2 #3” compilations, which offer a similar batch of bands. If you’re into this genre of hardcore, this compilation will not disappoint. As an added piece of bait, the singer (Rahi) for (now defunct band) Insect Warfare has joined the roster of Hatred Surge (following the departure of one of their singers, Faiza).

Spotlight: Curmudgeon

Spotlight: Curmudgeon

Curmudgeon is a new 3-piece hardcore punk band from Boston, MA that
rests comfortably in both the realms of crust and power violence.
Their singer, Krystina is a CT native that most notably did time as
the vocalist for Ripshit. In April, she put out the new Curmudgeon
material entitled, “Human Ouroboros” as a cassette on her label: We

This tape features eight songs that average about a minute in length.
The songs have a similar pattern, sludgy, slow-headbanging part into
blast beats. I dig it. The vocals are yelled in a way that you can
actually make out what is being said, which is a refreshing change in
a sub-genre where you often have to question whether what’s being
screamed and what’s written on the lyrics sheet are the same thing.

The entire demo is streaming on the bandcamp page linked here:

Live Music: F*ck#d Up Music at Popeyes Garage

Live Music: F%ck!d Up Music at Popeyes Garage

This post is a guest post by our friend Kryssi (Colorguard, Gramery Records, Popeyes Garage). Thanks Kryssi. Check these shows out.  Check out all that happens down at Popeyes Garage.  Josh and I (Rick) will be in Baltimore this weekend so we'll be missing at least one of these, but if you're around you should do your best to attend. All words forthwith are Kryssi's (and actually do reflect the views of this store, ha):

FUCKED UP MUSIC

A series of 2 shows at Popeyes featuring highly abrasive, other-worldly, or just plain fucked up music.

Sunday May 29th Italian free-jazz/psych group Jooklo Duo will be joining noise guitarist Bill Nace and sax player Paul Flaherty for a performance at Popeyes Garage. The chaotic duo, featuring Virginia Genta on sax & David Vanzan on drums, most recently released a 7” on Northern Spy titled “The Warrior”.

Here’s a pretty excellent video:

and their website:
http://jooklo.altervista.org/

Also playing will be Mittimus featuring members of Hat City Intuitive from Danbury, CT and Broadcloth, a trio from New Haven featuring member of An Historic and Dr. Caterwauls C of CC.

Tuesday, June 7th another harsh free-jazz outfit, Tiger Hatchery, from Chicago will be coming to Popeyes. The aggressive trio features Andrew Scott Young, Ben Billington (Quicksails, Moonrises), and Mike Forbes. They have an awesome LP on Pizza Night, as well as some other cool releases on Fag Tapes and Gilgongo Records. It’s their second time at Popeyes, and they were sick the first time so that’s kind of a guarantee. Go to their website, it plays a blistering jam: http://www.polarenvy.com/thc.html

Also playing will be Colorguard and Dasen, two solo noise projects from New Haven.

The Banana Splits The Tra La La Song 7"

"The Banana Splits Adventure Hour was an hour-long, packaged television program that featured both live action and animated segments. The series was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, and ran for 31 episodes on NBC Saturday mornings, from September 7, 1968 to September 5, 1970. The series costumes and sets were designed by Sid and Marty Krofft and the series' sponsor was Kellogg's Cereals.[1] The show was Hanna-Barbera’s initial foray into mixing live action with animation."
-Wiki
I honestly didn't even realize that it only had 31 episodes or that it aired in that time frame (a couple decades before I saw them). I remember them re-airing these Saturday mornings when I was a kid. I guess 31 weeks worth is enough for most of one year. I swear it seemed like a lot more. Guess not. So, this song is all about the hook ("Tra La La"). As a kid it's easy to identify with (fun repeated sounds) and easier to remember. And it starts with a food count off ("One banana, two banana, three banana, four."). So perfectly poppy rock and well, it's performed by big old muppet type characters (2 dogs, an elephant and a monkey... errr, a dog, a lion that looks like another dog, a gorilla that looks like it could also be a monkey and an elephant that would be hard to confuse for anything else). Fun!  Oh yea, and there's a song on the B-side too! Bonus! (Insert laughter and more fun.)

Defeater Empty Days & Sleepless Nights 2xLP/CD

Defeater is a hardcore band from Boston, and to no surprise are on Bridge 9 Records. What sets this band apart from other bands playing similar styles of hardcore is Defeater tells a story in each album. Each album tells a new story of a post World War II family, and their struggles coping with the war and internal struggles with family.

Empty Days & Sleepless Nights is separated into two sections: Empty Days. which is emotionally driven, sometimes technical hardcore and Sleepless Nights, which consists of four acoustic songs that finish up the album. I personally enjoy the Sleepless Nights portion of the album more, and I feel that it can appeal to a wider audience than the Empty Days portion can.

This release comes on CD, and a nice double LP gatefold package with a screened D side.

Noose It's Your Time 7"

Vegan straight-edge hardcore from Chicago. These dudes are on React! Records and sound way more akin to early 80s hardcore (SSD, Negative Approach) then they do their labelmates. The recording quality is dirty, which I love. The microphone sounds like it's buried deep down the singers throat most of the time. X-swatches, Football jerseys over hoodies, & stylish moshing.

Out And About: Brazen Betties 2nd Birthday Street Fair

Out And About: Brazen Betties 2nd Birthday Street Fair

Us small business owners have got to stick together, you know?  Well, whether you know or not we do.  Our friends in the Northwestern corner of the state have a pretty cool event going on tomorrow.  We were actually invited to take part.  Unfortunately, we could not logistically make that happen for ourselves.  Fortunately, there are plenty of great vendors and general goings-on at this to keep anyone's attention.

"In celebration of our 2nd birthday we are going BIG and BRAZEN...once again! Like last year, we are shutting down a block of Main St. to celebrate street fair style! Expect great music ..., a fashion show,CT Roller Girls, hula-hoop contest, a handful of hot rods, 20+ vendors, live music, food, a Zombie Crawl by Artwell Gallery & sooo much more to be announced!!" - Julia Sloan (Owner/Designer)

Spotlight: Cold Snap (UN-UK)

 Spotlight: Cold Snap

Cold Snap, from central CT, plays left-of-center, slow, noise-rock influenced hardcore. They sound like Unsane. You want to bang your head, but you can't. Ben's my dude (on bass). Jack (vocals) will punch you or get punched. Mario (guitar) lost mad weight; he's a sexy Portuguese fellow. Al D. (drums) is of many bands (Pale Horse, Brass Caskets) and screen prints (Shop Shogun). They have a long ex-members roster, but it wasn't until this line-up that they finally hit their stride.

When asked about their sound, Ben had this to say, "I'm trying to sound as twinkle-free as possible."  We like that idea because the opposite sounds like Phish and I don't think Phish and hardcore mix.

Here's a clip of them playing live:

They are playing the Converge show that we posted about previous to this so there is a nice way to check them out live soon (though tickets for that will be all but gone - something like 30 left).

The image posted at the top is the cover art from their 7" released by Hot Air Press in 2009.  Be on the lookout for a split 7" with another CT band (that Al D. also drums for) in the near future.  They also have a 7" coming out on Get Young Records out of MA.  Sounds from that first 7" are here:

Live Music: Converge, Trap Them, Burning Love, TFT, Cold Snap - 5/26/11 Milford, CT

Live Music: Converge, Trap Them, Burning Love, The Flaming Tsunamis, Cold Snap
5/26/11 Milford, CT

Converge is a 4-piece band, formed in February of 1990 in Salem, Massachusetts. Playing a blend of extreme metal and hardcore punk, this pioneer outfit helped define a lot of the rudiments of the fast-burgeoning metalcore and mathcore genres.

They first started by playing covers of hardcore, punk and heavy metal songs, being self-confessed “hardcore kids with leftover Slayer riffs”. The band soon graduated to playing live performances in 1991 after recording some demos on a 4-track recorder.

In their latter years, Converge have enjoyed relatively high levels of popularity despite the esoteric feel of their music and the substantial lack of media attention they receive. The extreme nature of their music, particularly the atonal vocals and often complicated finger-work of the guitar riffs make it difficult for some to appreciate this brand of metal. Later records have gradually become more extensively produced largely due to the maturation of their sound.

Converge’s influences range from hardcore punk bands, such as Black Flag, Negative Approach, The Accüsed, and Born Against; metal bands like Black Sabbath, Godflesh, Slayer, and Entombed; and proto-mathcore bands Starkweather and Rorschach. Jacob Bannon has also discussed an appreciation for and inspiration from grindcore on Earache Records, post-hardcore on Dischord Records; thrash metal, such as Suicidal Tendencies, Vio-Lence, and Death Angel, and post-punk groups, such as Depeche Mode and The Cure.
Deathwish Inc.

Trap Them
Trap Them is a band from Salem, New Hampshire, formed in 2001. They began as a side project for vocalist Ryan Mckenney (Backstabbers Inc.) and guitarist Brian Izzi (December Wolves). Since forming they have released three albums, Sleepwell Deconstructer, Seizures in Barren Praise and Darker Handcraft, as well as three EPs, Cunt Heir to the Throne, Séance Prime and Split with Extreme Noise Terror. Anyone digging the 90’s swedish deathsound from the Sunlight studio should have a go at this.
Prosthetic Records

Burning Love
Members of Toronto’s Burning Love play Hot Snakes-influenced punk rock with Chris Colohan (ex-Cursed) providing vocals. To date they have released a demo 7”, a single 7”, ‘Jack the Ripper’ and an LP entitled ‘Songs for Burning Lovers’

The Flaming Tsunamis
The Flaming Tsunamis are an experimental hardcore/punk band that incorporates a diverse range of eclectic musical styles further accentuated by their inclusion of a horn section, keyboards, samples and auxiliary percussion. Based out of New Haven, CT the fiercely DIY and relentlessly touring six piece has put out releases on Kill Normal, a label that members of the band founded. Since their formation in 1999 the band has released 2 EPs and 2 full-length albums. In 2011 the band announced “Externalities”, their latest and potentially final album.

Cold Snap
For fans of Into Another, Nirvana, Ink & Dagger, and UNSANE.  New stuff is really all about being similar to Unsane.

Intern at Redscroll Records!

Intern at Redscroll Records!

Don't even think twice about this.  Just do it.  We don't really care what your major is.  You're a music major with a minor in communications?  Perfect.  You're an ecology major with a minor in politics?  Not quite perfect, but we'll try (start a recycling program?). And most music comes from Earth (that we know of).  We'll make anything work.  There is a place for you here.

We are continuously growing.  We are continuously looking for ways to expand and having new voices is great.  There is one minor catch, these are unpaid internships (like most you'll find).  We've had one great intern so far and we're definitely looking forward to more like that.

College credit seems to be the reward/payment for most internships.  We can work with you and your advisors to make this happen.  We realize that most of you are done with school for now so this isn't the ideal time to ask, but if you can ask and are really interested we'll make this work.  If not, keep it in mind for the future.

Send inquiries to redscroll@gmail.com (attaching a resume is a definite plus)

Brown Angel Brown Angel LP
(Thunderhaus LTD /150)

Some things you know you'll like from reading the write up (or at least you know that you will if the write up is actually being honest).  This was the case with this record.  It was compared to a bunch of '90s dirge/sludge rock.  Right on.  Godflesh, Helmet, Unsane, and Slab! (when not getting funky) come to mind. Thunderous bass fuzz booming.  It's got a couple drawn out jammers that almost bring to mind more current purveyors of dirge like Angellic Process, but with less introspection (more in-your-face yelling).  It's hand-numbered out of 150 so I'm guessing they won't be around too long.  I at least hope that.  I also hope it then gets picked up for wider release.  These Pittsburgh guys deserve it.

Perhaps you've caught wind of the buzz surrounding Iceage, a young rock and roll group out of Denmark.  Perhaps you read the review I did of it here.  Perhaps you're well aware of this band and have already made your mind up.  And you're probably right, they are great.  I was very excited to be able to host them on a show here in CT (one of not very many stateside shows - I think there's going to be 6 total for this tour).  If you haven't yet made up your mind on Iceage you can check out the New Brigade LP on Dais (now on it's 2nd pressing).  We have some at the shop (1st press went fast so be quick about it).  If you need a fix right now, then check this video:

Female is a local progenitor of the minimal wave sound. It's quite good (and yes, Female is a moniker). Female has been very prolific and very under-the-radar. They've got many albums worth of material (66 tracks) available for free at the Free Music Archive.  Dig around on that for a while.  It should keep you busy for a minute.

Medication and The Men have rounded out the bill.  Coincidentally enough they both have recently released LPs on Sacred Bones Records.  I swear it's a coincidence.  Good label.  You should check out their wares (uhh, we sell them).

Should be fun!

Spotlight: Ferocious F*cking Teeth

FEROCIOUS F*CKING TEETH!

F.F.T. is heavy, stoney, & aggressive. Dudes have fangs. Howl at the moon. They've got two drummers. How did they find 2 drummers?  Most can't find 1! Easily compared to the Melvins. You like The Body, Lightning Bolt, and other loud Providence bands?  You can definitely hear the regional influence in that corner of the Earth. They're productive. They got a new 7" out they released themselves. It's called "Hounds". It's hand numbered, limited to 300 copies, comes with a patch, download card and a zine insert (detailed review over at Wailing City). We've got the 7" here now! And they've got a full length release on the horizon. They gig often. They put on shows in New London. Danny (Screaming Duties) volunteers at The Telegraph, cause he keeps it real.  His vocals are flavored with some fuzz and distance.  Live, the distance is about 1 millimeter from your face. Taste the flavor in your molars!

This is the patch you get with the 7" - it's a picture of Danny holdin' it down and guess what?  Yep, that's the CT State Quarter Redscroll shirt he's wearing:
(That goblet is probably full of blood.)

FFT is playing with Gods and Queens, Cold Snap (CT), and Red Blade at Cherry Street Station here in Wallingford next Sunday, May 15th.  Get familiar with these boys and then come out and witness their mandibular force.

Bane Holding This Moment LP/CD
Equal Vision Records

This album features is a compilation of 3 early Bane EP's; "Forked Tongue," "Free to Be, Free to Think," and "Holding This Moment EP." While those are all now out of print and pretty hard to come by, you can pick this up thanks to Hurry Up Records from Ireland giving it a proper release. For fans of 90s hardcore, unity, stage diving, positivity, and sound clips. If you were ever wondering why so many people have (or had) BANE sweatshirts, listen to this and you'll know.
LP Limited to 1,000 copies over 3 different colors.

Mexicans With Guns Ceremony LP
Innovative Leisure

Though the project title is plural there is just one man behind this.  It's a producer type record.  Mexicans With Guns is probably not the next Timbaland, though if it were up to me he would get that kind of appreciation.  Heavy latin vibes with current electronic music trend touches.  Syncopated rhythms and flowing vibrating synths.  It's really got a singular approach by the one man behind it and it's really cohesive which says a lot when you consider how varied the guests on the tracks are (Sasha Perera, Freddie Gibbs, Chico Mann and a few more).  This is probably my go-to summer record.
(You can read a little more about it and stream the whole thing here: Fact Mag)

Turnstile Pressure To Succeed 7"
Reaper Records

This is six songs of NYHC worship. I'm hearing Tons of Madball & Leeway, but with touches of Shelter & 108. Heavy groovey riffs & clean solos backed by moshy drum beats. Turnstile features the drummer of Trapped Under Ice on vocals. I think TUI is cheesy so I was a bit turned off at first, but this is solid!

BRASS CITY BOSS SOUNDS PRESENTS SUPERTOUCH

Saturday May 7, 2011
Silver City Hall
680 Old Colony Road
Meriden, CT 06451

The return of
Supertouch started in 1985 out of the ashes of the New York hardcore band Death Before Dishonor. They had released a demo and some WNYU tapes but no actual records. When their drummer, Mike of Judge/Youth of Today fame, left the band to pursue other musical interests the rest of them forged ahead. The band got a new drummer and took the name Supertouch after a Bad Brains song. They started out with a song on Revelation Records NYC HC: The Way It Is followed up by a 7", an LP and one last song on the Anti-Matter comp. They also recorded a song for the movie "Sam" and were the subject of an unofficial documentary. Definitely ahead of their time, Supertouch is thought by many to be one of the most influential bands to develop from the hardcore scene.
Mark Ryan (Vocals) Jon Biviano (Guitar) Joe (Bass) Andy Guida (Drums)

Get Shannon & The Clams' "Sleep Talk" here now!

Shannon & the Clams Sleep Talk

Following their supremely fun 2009 debut full-length "I Wanna Go Home," garage/surf outfit Shannon & the Clams seem to have really grown into their sound on their new album "Sleep Talk" (1-2-3-4 Go! Records). On "Sleep Talk," singer Shannon Shaw showcases the breadth of her vocal talents--she's got a unique voice, and seems to be able to bend and manipulate it to make it do whatever she wants it to. Her skills are best showcased on tracks like "You Will Always Bring Me Flowers" and "Oh Louie," where she proves she can really wail. Shaw has a strong understanding of the benefit of sometimes showing restraint and sometimes totally letting loose, and often treads the line between brassy belting and tender crooning.

Shaw is accompanied by guitarist and co-songwriter Cody Blanchard, who contributes some really great harmonizing on songs like "Done With You" and "Half Rat," and awesome strumming all over this record. The Clams' songs also tackle a wide variety of topics, from the serious (heartbreak, murder, and exes who are "half-rat") to the silly (quitting the cult you've joined, and being the "king of the sea"). If you're looking for the perfect album to usher in the good summer vibes, this is the one.
