Cold Snap Spice Island Single 7"

(Get Young Records)
The latest release from Connecticut's own Cold Snap is a two track single titled "Spice Island Single." It includes a brand new song, and a new, spacier take on the old smash hit "American Cancer," from their early demo days. Remember that demo? It had Nosferatu on the cover and the CD was spray painted. I remember them being passed out at every show in CT a few years ago. Great demo. This marks the third vinyl release by them, along with "Godspeed" and the split 7" with Brass Caskets we put out last year.

Coliseum Parasites EP CD/12"

(Temporary Residence Ltd.)
You may remember this Louisville hardcore trio from their Record Store Day 2011 split with Superchunk [Editor's note: or from their previous band, Breather Resist or their split with Doomriders or their previous LPs or even their tour with Thursday (JC)]. Coliseum’s sound can be described as blazing, aggressive and heavy punk with a dash of metal thrown in. There’s a very Queens of the Stone Age-esque “desert rock” flavor present, but there’s a much greater emphasis on high-speed hardcore energy as opposed to stoner rock. The lyrics are creative as well: in the soaring, poetic “Ghost of God,” vocalist/guitarist Ryan Patterson mourns that “there’s nothing / behind your eyes but a cold soul waiting to die.” The unrelenting, feedback-strewn thrasher “Blood of the Beasts” is another highlight, commenting that “we’re a violent race / full of savage beasts / led by a cold desire to consume all we see.” The introspective closer “Give Up and Drive” ponders “how many years will I drive alone before I find my home?” Their energy and musicianship really resonates throughout, expressing a very authentic sound that doesn’t care about sounding too traditional or experimental.

Life In Your Way Kingdoms 3xCD

(Self-Released)
Life In Your Way is a melodic christian metalcore/hardcore band from Connecticut that originally formed in 1999 and called it quits in 2008. Recently, they've gotten back together and with the wild success of their kickstarter endeavor, self released an epic three disc album called, "Kingdoms". Each disc is named appropriately to the material on it; "Kingdom Of Man", "Kingdom Of Darkness", and "Kingdom Of God". Similar to Johnny Cash's "Love, God & Murder". The band has expanded this time around to include three guitar players including former member Todd Mackey (vocalist of With Honor) and Andrew Nelson (Wrench In The Works, Call It Arson). For the sub-sub-sub-genre of melodic-christian-metalcore, this album is perfection. The hooks, the beefy guitar riffs, the blistering drums, the mosh, the pretty singing parts, they're all there and working together perfectly. Since "metalcore" as a scene has basically dissolved, I find this album a fitting nail in the coffin. No one will top this. I patiently await the vinyl version.

Pinch & Shackleton Pinch & Shackleton CD/2LP

(Honest Jons Records)
This record came out a little while ago and it has grown on me considerably with repeat listens. Pinch and Shackleton separately are names (if you are in touch with electronic music) you know well as veterans of the dubstep genre. While much of the spotlight on dubstep has been on the more club friendly drum 'n' bass sounds these two dwell closer to what many refer to as post-dubstep. This record floats close to the IDM tag even (if that's something people use anymore; it is). It is dubbed out and definitely dubstep with really deep and analogue sounds (sounds sourced not from the depths of chips and processors, but rather from blocks and actual drums etc.; of course, those chips and processors definitely play a part here and there and intermingle with ease). As hinted at, this is not dance floor material, but bedroom headphone head nodding contemplation music; the soundtrack to filing around the office or driving at night during a snow storm (I'll probably be doing this soon). Real chill and "organic." Vibezzz.

Spotlight: Female

Female is a musical project based in New Haven, CT. The project is the baby of Michael Donahue. It is dark pop easily relate-able to the recent resurgence of interest in the minimal wave sound (though as you'll read below Female would not like to be painted into that corner). Female has played a good amount of shows (like this one we did last year with Iceage) and I can tell you that while all enjoyable they are never predictable; not to say that you won't have some idea from listening to the music, but more that you don't know exactly which direction it will take that given night. With a wealth of material readily available for anyone with an internet connection and a set of speakers to listen to Female shows no signs of slowing down (many links to follow). I've (Rick) done a concise interview with Michael (videos and links aplenty within it).

Rick: Let's give a quick introduction to the uninitiated about Female. Generally, when asked, I tell people it's an adventurous minimal wave project. What do you tell people before they even hear your music?

MD: I usually just tell people that i make pop music; although I tend to veer off into some other territory, at the core my songs follow classic pop structures. Melody, the hook, the buildup, and the release. In my opinion, the recent re-discovery of minimal wave and NDW, albeit exciting, has limited potential for growth. Sometimes i can even pigeon hole myself worrying about these labels. I used to think that production quality somehow influenced genre, but no longer. Pop is pop. Just look at R. Stevie.

Rick: You've got a lot of output and most of it can be found at http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Female/. Is Female your only musical outlet? If there are others could you give a brief explanation of each. Do you see the output of Female slowing down (for other projects or any other reason at all)?

MD: I currently make music under Female, Milk Collection, the Wolfs, and Moon Bath. Milk Collection is a vehicle is use for less structured sounds, heavily influenced by an obsession with horror soundtracks. It began as a tribute project to the black metal duo Aghast. The Wolfs is a solo punk project where most of the songs are about staying up too late. There's a li'l five tracker coming out in March. Moon Bath, is a project made up of myself and Allison Kern from the band 2TonBug. Its mainly a video project. We start with the intention of making music, but then usually end up doing glamorous photo-shoots and making music videos. She directed and edited the "Dreemer" video and we have a second video (for "Time Erasur") coming out soon [editor note: embedded below!]. As for Female, I see no slowing down. Its my baby.

Rick: Female has limited output on physical media - could you give a physical discography? With free releases and physical releases do you find yourself having a different approach to their releases? Do you have more of a filtering process to see what might make the cut on a physical format? And do you have any plans or desire to release more physical music?

MD: For Female releases the physical ones were put out on a little label I had called Filth Forever. First was "Worms", which was mostly tape collage with short vignettes about boredom. After that I put out a more song based album called "Frozn Infent." Both were editions of 30 with the bulk of them given away to close friends. The next two; "Trash Queen" and "Mold Donor" were the first two I started selling at shows. After those were all gone I put them up on the FMA. There's a collab tape with Supernaturelle (now Beeman Glow) floating around out there too. (I think there's some copies left at Feeding Tube). Other than those, the rest of my albums are for free. The main reason I do this is for financial restraints. Putting out tapes or records yourself is insanely expensive and time consuming. And although I'm very particular about the production quality of my albums, I'm not at all an audiophile, and I see no problem with mp3 downloads as a means to get my music out there.

Secondly, I hate the whole "send in the demo, wait around with fingers crossed, hope someone gives a shit" routine. Its not that im against physical formats, I just think that artists tend to rely on them too much, as some sort of strange vindication. I would love to have records out for people to buy, but I feel the demo submission process can be a bit demeaning. Don't get me wrong, independent labels are the saviours of music, I just think that artists shouldn't rely so much on their acceptance. Lastly, I love the internet. With sites like the FMA its a great way to not only get your music out there, but also to get radio play on WFMU (best station ever [editor note: I wholeheartedly do not disagree with this.]), and connect with other artists.

As far as what makes it to a physical release vs. a free download, there's no difference for me. Whether or not the music is on a physical format should have no bearing on the quality. Some artists make that distinction and i think its not fair to the listener, due to the idea that in order the hear "the good stuff', you have to pay for it.

Rick: Describe how your physical environment (New Haven, your personal space, your day-to-day/night-to-night) effects your musical output in brief? Do you find yourself ever having an agenda with your music or do you find it just to be a release (or something in the middle)?

MD: My environment has everything to do with the music. I love New Haven with all my heart. Seeing the super poor right next to the super rich can be depressing at times, but it can also do a lot for creativity. Living here has really taught me that no matter what your bracket, we all have an obsession with technology. Everyone wants to be glamorous, or at least appear to be. The nightlife here is really bizarre, which is great for me because i usually sleep during the day and am up all night. Everything closes relatively early, so things get weird after 11. My living space also has a lot to do with how I write music. I live in a very small room in this big wierd old house thats very dimly lit and almost always a mess, and I think my music reflects that vibe. Its easy to hide in my cave and work.

My music definitely has an agenda, but not outwardly. The aesthetic is very apparent, but i try to keep any meaning to myself. Most of my songs are about reptilians, technology, and gender, but i dont want to alienate any of my listeners. I'm not trying to persuade anyone to follow my beliefs about these topics, and thats why I've never included lyrics in any of my releases. Its not that I'm trying to be secretive or mysterious. If someone where to approach me asking what a song was about, I would gladly tell them. I just think that too often the message can get in the way of truly enjoying the music. With that said, every album I make does have a specific vibe throughout. I've always been obsessed with the idea of "the album" as one complete package. I dont want people to hear my tracks out of context. I know that's pretty idealistic, but I make all my songs with continuity and flow in mind.

Bringers of Disease Gospel of Pestilence CD

(Translation Loss / Waylon Recordings)
The members of this Dayton, Ohio metal quintet came together from varying backgrounds, including Mouth of the Architect’s post-metal and Acheron’s straightforward death/black/thrash metal. The latter style is the primary influence audible on this EP. They deliver what one should expect from the genres: screamed vocals, aggressive blast-beats, chords with tremolo picking, and an unmistakable sense of despair throughout. “Doomed To Flames” kicks right into action with high-speed rage, followed by the even more-downtrodden “Your Prayers Remain Unheard;” it starts with a slower, doom-influenced sound, before launching back into intervals with speed ranging from medium to blisteringly fast. “Our Final Reward In Hell” strikes a good balance between the white-hot aggression of the opening track and the more-subdued parts of the second, managing to pull off the record’s most memorable hooks. Closing track “A Plague To End All Plagues” is the longest, trudging through one final wasteland of doom, with an abrupt and brief return to speed halfway through.

Cut Hands Afro Noise 1 Volume 1 LP

(A Dirter Release)
Cut Hands is William Bennett's (Whitehouse) self described and album titled afro noise project. Volume 1 and Volume 2 are being released currently (we should have vol. 2 shortly) and they are collections of this projects work to this point. Truthfully, it's not all that noisey considering his past works. It's welcome. It's jungle sci-fi soundtrack-type music. Polyrhythms and stabs of dissonance definitely make it more noisey than Fela Kuti for instance and these are not pieces meant for easy digestion by someone looking for afro-funk. There is no funk here. There is however a mean beat with some meaner instrumentation (non-instrumentation). Foetus might come to mind without the whimsy and plus more afrocentric bases. So, while you won't find this as the soundtrack to the Venture Brothers (I don't think it's a good fit like Foetus is) you might soon find it in an early-John-Carpenter-like jungle sci-fi action adventure movie. Let that movie play in your head.

Crisis Hymns Of Faith LP (Reissue)

(La Vida Es Un Mus)
This is a reissued LP by a well enough known band that includes Douglas P. (Pre-Death In June). Post punk a la Joy Division or Wire or Television (which is a fun coincidence because the first song on here is "On T.V.") or a bunch of other bands you can lump into this huge category of snotty brit-rock from the 70s and 80s. This is a repress that stays true to the original with the identical sleeve (with a different record label imprint being the notable difference) and with a black and white glossy insert with band pic on one side and a collage of pictures, written words and newspaper clippings on the other. I really feel like that's all I need to write about this so yea, good record that I'm glad we now carry.

Spectrals Bad Penny CD/LP

(Slumberland Records)
Though it may sound like the work of a full band, Spectrals is a project from 21-year-old Louis Jones of Yorkshire, England – he wrote and provided vocals for all of the songs, and also played 9 of the 12 instruments featured. “Nostalgic” is a fitting descriptor for his brand of indie-pop-rock – he settles on a blend influenced by the 50s and 60s, with structures reminiscent of early rock ‘n’ roll and doo-wop, as well as guitars and synth creating a surf rock-vibe. Though the record does have a pretty comfortable “pop” element throughout, he isn’t afraid to be somber; his love life is a recurring theme, with topics such as the fear of settling down and “missing the chase” (Doing Time.) He also reflects by saying “love isn’t love until it hurts” (If I Think About The Magic Will It Go Away?) His vocal delivery is mellow throughout, making him sound quite content and experienced when it comes to dealing with romantic problems that could be gut-wrenching to others. On this record, he reaches a good balance between sounding true to the era he represents and being well-produced enough to be accessible to a wide audience.

Crone Endless Midnight CD

(Translation Loss/Waylon Recordings)
This project is from former Isis bassist Jeff Caxide, along with several other band members helping with everything from the instrumentation to the artwork and layout. The result is a radical departure from a “metal” sound, instead focusing on rich, darkly beautiful electronic/drone soundscapes. Opener “What You Dream Of” is built around a sensual synth endless melting over a galaxy speckled with stars burning brightly. “Ghost City” is a bit more chilling, with a looping, mechanical-sounding sample simulating a barren atmosphere; however, it eventually returns to the soothing, strangely uplifting nebula essence of the previous track. “The Silver Hammer” sounds like a full-day trip through the vast, dark wilderness, and “Cellar Holes From A Lifetime Ago” feels like a morose, introspective late-night walk through a deserted city of the future. The title track closes the album with more celestial ambience, sweeping electronics, and thick, resonant guitar plucking. As distressing as an “endless midnight” concept may sound, this album doesn’t aim to make listeners feel downtrodden. Rather, it’s a step forward in songwriting maturity – an unexpectedly mellow journey through the darkest caverns of the mind.

Spazz La Revancha [Reissue] LP

(625 Thrash)
Here’s the second LP in a series of long out-of-print Spazz reissues; Crush Kill Destroy was re-released last December and Dwarf Jester Rising is coming back in the future, though when exactly is unknown. Originally released on the now-defunct Sound Pollution label in 1997, this record is another great example of how Spazz made the powerviolence genre fun. The endlessly buzzing guitar, rapid-fire drumming, and distinct floor-shakingly low-tuned bass was mixed with all three members’ shared vocal shouting – the result was a refreshingly intense-yet-tight sound. They strike the perfect balance between the unique fury of both hardcore punk and grindcore. Their razor-sharp wit remains strong, with poseur bashing, kung fu referencing, and Satan worshiping. There isn’t much more that needs to be said – these guys were smart enough to make something truly unique-sounding in a sea of similar-sounding bands.

1.6 Band The Checkered Past Of All Kings Present 7"

I've liked 1.6 Band since a friend made me a a really crappy quality mixtape with them on it about ten years ago. Originally these guys broke up in 1993, but got back together to play some shows and release this 7". It came out back in 2010 but this was the first time I've gotten my hands on some physical copies. Most bands that break up and get back together fifteen or twenty years later can't pull off the same energy or style as they did in their youth. Not 1.6 Band. These guys pick up right where they left off, pumping out 4 more solid math rock fused hardcore songs. The lyrics are quickly shot out at you in a completely non aggressive yell-talk. I would suggest them for anyone who likes Quicksand, Daughters, Fugazi or Serotonin. You can find used copies of their 1992 self titled full length all over the place for like six dollars, I suggest you pick that up too.

Odonis Odonis Hollandaze CD

This Toronto-based band is the newest project from former Ten Kens guitarist Dean Tzenos. They play the kind of booming garage/noise-punk that echoes like it was recorded in an airplane hangar. Though its lo-fi aesthetic should please fans of the “shitgaze” craze (Psychedelic Horseshit, Eat Skull, earlier Wavves, etc.,) it sounds like the main influence is 1980s stuff like Big Black, The Jesus Lizard, and Swans. Structurally, tracks like “White Flag Riot” share screeching guitars and repeating drum-blasts synonymous with that era. Other less-distorted tracks like “Seedgazer” and “Ledged Up” stay faithful to the style as well, because the lo-fi really does sound analog and natural for capturing a certain era. I can’t leave out the other genre that unmistakably takes center-stage: surf-rock. In an interview with exclaim.ca, Tzenos said that that’s the genre his dad chose to teach him when he first started playing guitar. The resulting sonic ruckus sounds great for catching a wave at an industrial park’s beachfront.

Sharps Injury / Disheveled 12"

Rhythmic noise holds a warm spot in my gut. When it hits me right it sends signals to my nerves that are electric. The first time I heard "Denogginizer" from Converter was one of those moments and the first time I heard whatever the first thing I heard from Winterkalte (and a few subsequent times) was like that. Protectors of Bass might have had the same effect. Since that time I have been dulled to it and crave more than that same formula (not that those were formulaic, but many others patterned themselves after them... you get it.). Sharps Injury (Keef Baker) throws a wrench in the formula by slowing it down a bit, adding a layer of ambience/introspection and (dare I say) song structure (moments when the ambience float into the further background and other pieces of the song find prominence are nice, but when the transition to the next part of the song kicks in and then disappears that is ultimately the most satisfying). These aren't dance floor fillers like "Denogginizer," but it's been 12 years since I first heard that and I really don't want that in a new track. Hit me, let me get up and then hit me a few more times. Disheveled (Greg Van Eck of Prometheus Burning) picks right up on the B-side and adds the nice nostalgic element of a treated vocal sample ("The mask is slipping." I don't know where it's from, but it's always been part of the charm to figure that out.). To be blunt, this side is really enjoyable on a more base level than the A side. It's more akin to what came to be refered to as Power Noize than to what was originally called rhythmic noise. It's pretty silly to keep splitting hairs about that though. It's good and I enjoy the industrial aesthetic and the machine like qualities with the vocal samples. Play it loud for maximum damaging effect.

Collections of Colonies of Bees Giving CD/LP

(Hometapes)

This Wisconsin post-rock band is known for collaborating with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver to form Volcano Choir. Here, right from the opening track “Lawn,” CCB sound like they’re roaming freely on endless verdant meadows beneath a blue sky as far as the eye can see. Like Battles and Explosions in the Sky, they utilize their experimental style to explore gorgeous sound plateaus and, on this record, create a feel-good vibe instead of trying to sound overly “challenging.” The energetic drumrolls and sunshine-tinged guitar really help stimulate the atmosphere, creating an uplifting world that’s just fun to get lost in. It all culminates with the sunset-ready 9-minute finale “Vorms,” which includes plenty of cymbal-crashes, mood-evoking orchestral electronics, and an enthusiastic, twinkling piano-line.

Warsaw (Joy Division) Reaction LP

(A Rockville Production)

Before Joy Division was "Joy Division", they were known for about 18 months as, "Warsaw". They only played a handful of shows and recorded a five song demo before officially changing their name to avoid being confused with Warsaw Pakt. "Reaction" is an unofficial compilation, tracks one through eight were recorded live off the soundboard at Rock Garden (Middlesbrough U.K 14.9.1977), while tracks nine through thirteen were recorded at a rehearsal (Moss Road 1977). These recordings definitely capture a heavier, harder, and slower version of these guys then what's displayed only a few months later on, "An Ideal For Living". Ian Curtis is screaming, growling and not singing. The sound quality is very good and despite the colorfully violent review of the live gig provided on the back jacket, there is little crowd rowdiness present here in this recording.

This is where I'm at right now. Long playing singles with solid tracks. This is some serious electronic funk for the 2010s (as opposed to what I might think of from the 80s anytime the words electronic and funk are used together). It's got the purple vibe that Joker coined with the second song of the A side having some nice Zapp sounding vocoder sounds (taking it back to the 70s to move forward from the 80s apparently - at least according to how I'm reviewing this). The B side starts off nice and sweet with a track that gets some nice mixes of bass sounds intertwined with some house style vocal samplings. And it finishes with remixes by Shlohmo and the LOL Boys which are both worthy of club play (the hippest of clubs; no sarcasm implied).

From Love To Dust 12"

(Project: Mooncircle)

Glitch-hop, trip-hop, and whatever other words you want to use for down tempo syncopation jams fit this (one could not deny the witchy aesthetic of the 12" sleeve). The A side is three different tracks including the title track and the B side is three versions of the title track. It's got some house-like qualities (clean production), but never enters into the uptempo 4/4 realm. Sweet estrogen filled vocal lines meander in and out of tracks (Creep perhaps comes to mind, but with less focus on the vocalist and more on just being chill). Wild woods environmental sounds (wood blocks, birds chirping, general ambience) hover just beneath the surface as well. The A side finishes with a funk laden subdued Outkast sounding joint with a nice sugary synth line. The remixes are far enough away from the original and each other to keep it worth a listen through (rather than one at a time as if often meant with 12" singles).

Spotlight: NO!

NO! is the name of a punk rock band from Middletown, Connecticut. If you know your CT punk and aren't familiar with these guys yet you might be familiar with their faces through some of the past bands they've been in (Rat Byte for instance). Carlo is also the dude we call when we have turntables we need repaired. He does a great job, so if you're having some record player issues hit him up, 860-227-9599.

The music is fast paced melodic rock'n'roll punk. Vocally, and I know someone will take offense to this, but it reminds me of a less quirky Death By Stereo. I've heard more than a couple people say they belong on SST in the 80s (I'd add Alternative Tentacles to that statement). Makes sense to me. They have a very fun west coast 80s hardcore type slant (song "Can you dig it?" for instance).

We're here in the midst of the holiday season and gifting will be in full force soon enough as we all make preparations. I hope this wording makes it sound very regimented and official. The purpose of this post is just to suggest a few easy suggestions for people you might not know exactly what to get, but you know they like this store.

Also, feel free to give your folks (or friends, acquaintances, etc.) a list that we can help them with. We promise not to bite them. In fact, we'll help them find exactly what it is that's on the list (or let them know when we can have the item in question in - hurry! We only have a couple more orders coming in before all the exchanges between loved ones goes down.).

We just had these new Gift Certificates designed by our friend Todd (Teaessare; the maker of our sign, designer of our stickers and a few shirts). They came out great. I think anyone would be psyched to see this (a little more psyched than our old plain old paper ones - of course, if you're loved ones came in before today they got that so please be extra excited that they planned so far in advance for you. Rule of thumb: be excited about stuff.).

Record cleaning kits are always a nice idea for a new collector or even for an old collector of records who might not have one (or if their old one is now pretty grimey). We have a couple to choose from. Right now, this one pictured is the only one in stock. We'll have more (of both models we stock) in on Wednesday after 3PM.

In the spirit of keeping up the maintenance of a record collection we also would suggest Poly Sleeves (bags) for any collection. Keeping your records bagged is a simple way to keep the outer jackets intact (protection from dust, from friction wear, etc.). We carry them in 4ML and 3ML weights (4ML being the thicker of the two and what we use to bag all used stuff and any unsealed new stuff). We are currently out of stock of LP sizes right now (there's been a big rush lately - perhaps other people knew what we're telling you now). We have 7" bags in stock and we will have more LP sized ones in on Monday after 3PM.

And second to lastly, we can't not mention the fact that we sell record players. Maybe you're in the market for a new one or you know someone who is. We sell the Numark TTUSB ($120) which is a great introductory turntable that also can be used to rip vinyl to your computer. It comes with the software. Josh owns one of these and likes it a lot. If you're looking to move to an introductory audiophile grade turntable we carry the Rega RP1 ($400). It's very no-nonsense and straightforward. It plays records and has virtually no mechanical noise to speak of. If you've seen the P1 model at the front of our shop (pictured below) and if you've heard it you might know exactly why we love it. The RP1 is the update to the P1 (in case you didn't get that).

And books! Books! We carry books dealing in may aspects of music and some that are just left of center and have only tertiary musical connections.

Moonface Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I’d Hoped CD/LP

Moonface is a project from Canadian indie musician Spencer Krug, whose credits include Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown and Frog Eyes. Just as the title suggests, Krug’s organ takes center stage, creating a nostalgic 80s-electronic sound backed up by a looping drum machine and his emotional, resonant vocals. On this record, he crafts hypnotic atmospheres that sound suited for underwater levels in 8-bit video games, particularly in the jovial/droll-sounding opener “Return to the Violence of the Ocean Floor,” where the organ seems to complement an elegant coral reef formation. The big standout track is “Fast Peter,” which utilizes a very simple yet energetic and quick-paced hook that really creates a feeling of movement. Each of these five tracks is relatively lengthy (ranging six-and-a-half to eight minutes,) making it easier to focus on and absorb each landscape.

The Body and Braveyoung Nothing Passes CD

The Body’s style is “blackened/noise/doom,” while Braveyoung plays orchestral drone-rock: both collaborated to create this record. The result sounds like a cinematic anthem for the end of the world. Warbling feedback, eerily mellow ambience and long, drawn-out guitar sprawl sound like a harsh sunset radiating the silhouette of a ravaged metropolis. The uncompromising drum patterns in “Song 2” sound a marching squad unfazed by the destruction. Most unexpected is the juxtaposition of gentler sounds, most notably a xylophone, against the wall of tumult. This is the most fascinating in the title track, where the instrument’s lullaby sounds strangely calm and innocent against the acrid noise sizzle, eventually fading into orchestral ambience. The album closes with a cover of Exuma’s “The Vision;” an easily accessible acoustic/choral piece with soothing-yet-poignant vocals from Chrissy Wolpert of the Assembly of Light Choir (the droning guitar sticks around throughout, though.) Although a departure musically (except for the background drone,) it fits well because the lyrics give an appropriately apocalyptic farewell.

"The holiday toy drive for children with special needs focuses on children with special needs between the ages of 0-3. Our goal is to collect new and gently used, unwrapped toys during the holiday season. These toys are then distributed just before Christmas to needy children with special needs in our community. We want all children to experience the magic and joy of the holiday season regardless of their abilities or socioeconomic status.

Providing the children with toys that are appropriate for their skill level and using them to teach new skills is also very important. Often times the toys needed to practice a skill are financially unavailable to the family, which is why the toy drive is so important in helping to serve as two functions: first as a holiday gift and second as a necessary therapeutic tool.

We consult with a team of professionals who work in the early intervention field to provide the best fit for each child. We just need your help with collecting the toys. Some of the best items to donate include nesting cups, blocks, stacking rings, shape sorters, puzzles, books, cause and effect toys, trucks, dolls, pop beads, lacing beads, yoga balls, and balance toys"

Good day today. Lots of friendly faces. Thanks everyone. Looking forward to seeing many more faces tomorrow.

We put all the dollar records out front; we'll do the same for the rest of the weekend too.

6AM brought a rush of people we had not yet seen on Black Friday before. The Record Store Day releases went rather quickly and we have very little of that left.

After we dealt with the initial flood of people we got DJs going at about 11AM with our friend Tim Daltrey (bottom right of above picture; below looking at a record):

DJ Lokash picked it up from there for a couple.

Always an enjoyable and varied set. Love it.

The Rolling Stones 7" got caught up in customs so that has been delayed and we'll have it sometime next week it looks like. What we did get is pretty limited. We don't foresee it being nearly as anticipated or demanding as Record Store Day in April, but we would suggest showing up close to opening if you want to make sure you get one of the exclusive items. There are no holds on any of this stuff so it is first come, first served on it all. We believe that's the fairest way to do it.

Jazkamer Chestnut Thornback Tar LP

This Norwegian act serves up another delightfully nasty slab of noise. Opener “Sentimental Journey” sets the mood with a 20-minute river of noxious, lava-hot guitar sludge before delving into tracks that experiment with more varied elements of noise music. There’s plenty of good ol’ static in tracks like “In The Days Of The Burning Guitar,” which sounds like a post-nuclear war melee between robots and mutants under the blinding sun, thanks to its frazzled, uncompromising drum patterns. What noise really boils down to for me, though, is what provides a freakish-enough sonic overload; I think this album really delivers on that. “Yellow Mountain Fur Peak” reminds me of the playful-yet-abrasive tinkering on Nautical Almanac’s “Rooting For The Microbes” album, while others like “It Is The Nobel Prize I Want. It’s Worth $400.000” take on a total Merzbow-level meltdown of bracing disorientation.

Kuedo Severant CD/LP

Kuedo is a project from Jaime of Vex'd. I loved Vex'd, but it's been revealed that his partner in that project, Roly, was perhaps more of the driving force of their gritty grimey dubstep pioneering sound. Jaime Vex'd's 12" (under that name) was still in line with that sound a bit (much less dark however). Kuedo might as well be completely disassociated beyond knowing his pedigree. Using modern elements in tandem with older soundtrack feels from the likes of Goblin, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, and John Carpenter (and more recently Zombi) Jaime has created a unique album with classic sensibilities resulting in many replays from myself (unquantifiable replayability).

The extreme lo-fi craze can be pretty polarizing, and these guys chose the route of self-deprecation by identifying their genre as “shitgaze.” It’s best not to compare them to bands like Wavves, though; Psychedelic Horseshit is more enthusiastic about electronic experimentation (plus, PH’s sound is still pretty rough compared to several previously ultra-distorted bands that have gone for a cleaner sound recently, including Wavves.) “I Hate The Beach” and “Revolution Waters” are good examples of the fuzzed-out dream-like atmospheres that this album conveys. The sloppy sound and droll vocals also remind me of The UV Race’s “Homo,” but more “indie/experimental” than that record’s more traditional psych-rock roots. “French Countryside” gave me a mental image of Black Dice performing in a ramshackle arcade, and “Dead On Arrival” has a hypnotic, fantastical shimmer throughout. A more surprising track is the smoothly ambient “Automatic Writing,” which feels like a strangely calm experience inside a computer. This album sure likes to explore.

As stated on the flyer for the sale if you spend $100 you get one of these for free (or the symbol design we did earlier this year). This new simple design was requested by more than a handful of people so I hope you all like it. We think it came out pretty great. It's the basic idea from our first square bumper sticker.

Ringworm / Mindsnare Your Soul Belongs To Us 7"

Ringworm is finally free from their Victory Records contract after this years full length release, "Scars". It's very fitting that they would find a home with Lord Dom at A389 Recordings. The cover to this comes as an eight panel comic drawn by Human Furnace, which is about a girl picking up this very 7", playing it backwards and having her Victory-lovin' enemies thwarted by evil spirits. This is worth picking up for the art alone. Musically, Ringworm bangs out two short high energy thrash metal hardcore crossover jams that are typical for them. It looks like these were recorded in 2005 & 2007, so they've been shelved for a while. Mindsnare is an Australian hardcore band, that has been kicking around since 1993 playing a very similar style to Ringworm, but Ringworm was doing it first so they win.

EVERYDAY SUNSHINE is a documentary about the band Fishbone, musical pioneers who have been rocking on the margins of pop culture for the past 25 years. From the streets of South-Central Los Angeles and the competitive Hollywood music scene of the 1980's, the band rose to prominence, only to fall apart when on the verge of "making it."

Laurence Fishburne narrates EVERYDAY SUNSHINE, an entertaining cinematic journey into the personal lives of this unique Black rock band, an untold story of fiercely individual artists in their quest to reclaim their musical legacy while debunking the myths of young Black men from urban America. Highlighting the parallel journeys of a band and their city, EVERYDAY SUNSHINE explores the personal and cultural forces that gave rise to California's legendary Black punk sons that continue to defy categories and expectations.

At the heart of the film's story is lead singer Angelo Moore and bassist Norwood Fisher who show how they keep the band rolling, out of pride, desperation and love for their art. WESU Record Fair, Youth of Today, Salvation...

Connecticut has a lot going on this weekend. Here are three things that we will most definitely be in attendance for.

1. WESU Fall Record Fair (Facebook Event). Last year we scored a ton of great stuff for way cheap! Sean got a a copy of Botch "We Are The Romans" LP /300 for $30, that's a steal! We'll have a couple of tables of stuff from our store set up along with 17 other dealers.The Hartford Area Roller Derby girls will be selling baked goods as well. Get sugared up and dig hard. There will be a couple food trucks outside too. This fair is FREE. 11AM - 4PM. Saturday, November 12th Beckham Hall Wyllys Avenue, Wesleyan University Campus Middletown, CT.

2. After the record fair, we'll be heading down to The El'N'Gee in New London, CT to catch a performance by legendary Connecticut natives, Youth Of Today. This show is brought to us by Brass City Boss Sounds, so head over to their site and secure your ticket to move up front and shout out loud.

The last time I saw YOT was 1999. They played a reunion show in Wallingford. It was originally supposed to be at the Extreme Skatepark, but it got moved to the Polish Club down the street. I'm glad it did because the floor of the 4th floor warehouse the skatepark was in would have absolutely caved in. At that time, Jamey (Hatebreed, Stillborn, Jasta) had a small record store called Subterranean in the center of town. The day of the show, a bunch of local kids got recruited to help out. I got left at the shop by myself. No one gave me the key to take the security cases off of CDs, so I was cutting them out with pliers. People from all over the world flew in for that show and had to come to Subterranean to pick up their tickets. I have a really vivid memory of trying to explain to some nice European dudes that I couldn't take purple money.

When I arrived at the show that night, I remember the hall was packed super tight and it felt like it took forever from the time the doors opened to when Right Brigade started that night. As soon as the feedback started in, the floor opened up wide. Dudes were moshing so hard, the floor boards were bouncing up and down and I could barely stay on my own two feet, let alone defend myself from getting hit. I made my way to the side of the stage and managed to watch the rest of the show from the speaker stacks. Youth Of Today was amazing that night. I can't put the vibe of their set into words.

Last Saturday, we were hit with a freak snow storm that sent trees crashing down onto power lines causing most of the state to be without electricity. my house and Redscroll were both luckily spared. When I woke up Sunday morning, I had a few free hours to myself thanks to the nor'easter so, I reached for my new copy of "Live...Suburbia". Through personal essays and collected color photos, authors Anthony Pappalardo (In My Eyes, Radio Silence) and Max G. Morton (Heartworm) set a tone for what growing up as part of a subculture in the suburban landscape of the 1980s was like. A pre-internet era, where people couldn't just "google" anything that was foreign to them. Where you had to dig deep and be patient if you wanted to get outside the box and not end up a fucking norm. I recommend that you flip through the book first, just look at the pictures, transport yourself back in time, then start into the essays.

Planetary Assault Systems The Messenger 2x12"

I've recently been getting some heavy nostalgia for the late 90s/early 00s and specificaly the maximalist feel that came along with that time; barrages of sensory overload. The Digital Hardcore Records label (Alec Empire of Atari Teenage Riot's baby) was great for that. Industrial Strength records just turned 20 (I went to the 20th anniversary party and enjoyed it). Draw back a bit from those approaches (the in-your-face non-stop thumping approach) and you'd find acts like Zipperspy who were more adventurous with maximalism; drawing into a more experimentalist slant while not losing the rhythm behind it. Mash Up Soundsystem was good for that approach too; breakcore on a more adventurous journey (not relying on gangster movie samples and 808s for instance). Planetary Assault Systems is perhaps a modern take on that (maybe it's a stretch for anyone but me to see it this way; then again, I'm the author here so what I say goes). Mix in the Modern Love camp (Andy Stott, Demdike Stare, Claro Intelecto...) and make it a bit hyper. Minimal maximalism? Take the ride. Syncopation in afro-centric rhythms while not completely full (leaving some tasteful spaces to realize how silly you look dancing to this; we all look silly dancing no matter how skilled -> fact). I should put this on 45 RPM and really get a workout going. See ya.

Purity Ring / Braids Belispeak / Peach Wedding 7"

Yo, you like girls singing all demure-like over some off-beat mostly electronic business? So do I? Did you get that free Labyrinth Ear release a while ago? No, you should get that here. So sickeningly sweet and dreamy, but without any twangy guitar rattling or straight-forward drumming weighing it down (I'm serious). Thank you Twin Peaks for influencing so many people to just slow down and take care and party. Slow it down to 33 1/3 and get extra syrupy and it's still good (at that speed they actually sound like they could be the same band). I listened to this probably more times on the wrong speed. I admit it. Try it.

Yacht Shangri-La CD/LP

Right from the get-go, it’s clear that there’s something peculiar about this disco-sounding electropop/dance-punk album. The promo copy’s description tells the listener that the disc “contains information key to the building of a new utopia.” It kicks off with the super-danceable “Utopia,” pulsing with a sunny city-of-the-future vibe before the polar opposite “Dystopia;” a slower, funkier and obviously bleaker track with vocals that are still delivered with similar emphasis. The meanings behind the messages are up for debate; I know it’s been quoted in several reviews already, but lyrics like "I love you like a small-town cop/ Yeah, I wanna smash your face in with a rock” play a significant role in understanding just what YACHT is conveying. Instead of brainless euphoria, it sounds like a form of self-awareness in which they acknowledge that they want to try and enjoy life in a very imperfect world. It would make for a very unique night of club dancing.

Wolves in The Throne Room - Celestial Lineage

Wolves In The Throne Room is an ambient black metal band from Olympia,
Washington. They were formed by two brothers (Aaron
& Nathan Weaver) in 2002, and released their first full length,
""Diadem of Twelve Stars" in 2006. Since then, they have been signed
to Southern Lord Records and released 2 full lengths, and EP, and a
live album. "Celestial Lineage" marks their fourth full length
release.

Wolves is not like most black metal bands, in that they do not promote
satanism, wear corpse pain or do much of what the average black metal
band does. Instead, they fuse their music with themes of nature, often
play outdoors, and promote meditation during live shows. "Celestial
Lineage" is as alluring and beautiful as it is aggressive and dark. It
has not left my turntable for about 5 days now, and I don't see it
leaving anytime soon.

This double LP comes on 180 gram vinyl in a thick gatefold jacket with
printed inner sleeves and an OBI strip. Really top notch packaging,
but that's to expect from Southern Lord.

Out & About: WFMU Record Fair (NYC)

Josh and I (Rick) and our friend Ben will be at the WFMU Record Fair on Friday and Saturday. We'll have 2 tables set up. The fair goes through Sunday, but we'll not be there that last day. It is the best event like this anywhere. There are hundreds of dealers (dealer list here) with a wide variety of specialties. And there are other special events and performances (Prince Rama, Black Hollies, CSC Funk Band... list). If you can't make it, but want us to keep a look out for something in particular please feel free to send us an email with what it is you'd like us to look for and (this is important) how much you'd be willing to pay for it.

Dolphins Into The Future ... On Seafaring Isolation LP

(Not Not Fun)
This is the kind of music that doesn’t abide by traditional “songwriting” – it’s better to just close your eyes and lose yourself in the freely flowing atmosphere. DITR is a project from Belgian composer Lieven Martens, who combines elegant, tranquil electronics with perpetual ocean ambience (chirping seabirds, barking sea lions, a creaking boat, clanging buoy bells and lots of crashing ocean waves are heard through most of this record.) The insert says that this LP is a tribute to Cetacean Nation founder John Cunningham Lilly M.D.’s “Seafaring Isolation” writings, which analyze “what happens when an isolated mind roams around the oceanic world by itself, only surrounded by this vast system of overwhelming natural elements.” Themes of unconscious thoughts and dreams are prevalent, particularly in “Lapse ~ Dream,” combining what sounds like nighttime swamp ambience with a woodwind instrument that sounds like it’s making bird calls. The overall experience is curiously soothing; a very palatable mix of not only electronic ambience, but also elements of trance and even new age. Personally, this is the kind of music I love to put on for a blissful chill-out.

Björk Biophilia CD/LP

All right, so let's just go with the obvious question. I know it's the obvious question because it's the one I have heard already a good couple dozen times. "Is it better than the last few albums?" First of all, last few? Few? I think the amount of Bjork releases gets distorted because of the amount of time in between each - or maybe the Drawing Restraint soundtrack is being counted or all the singles? I'm not sure really. Secondly, Bjork is great and I'm totally biased. I like Volta and I like Voltaic too (the live one consisting of songs from the former - maybe this is included in the "few."). I like Medulla and I like Selma Songs (also a soundtrack and arguably not a proper Bjork album). I absolutely love Vespertine and Homogenic and Post and Debut. I even find the more folky solo things before those pretty endearing (let's not even begin to discuss those though). Biophilia is great. My slanted prejudice view had me believing this before I heard one note, but each note I've heard (I'd say I'm on my 12th or so listen) since has been a reassurance of that thought. It's great. There are fun breakcore/hard-tek elements which doubly draw me in. The light strings and her voice make this a minimal journey at times and then the maximalist bursts of drums balance it. Yes, it's better than Volta. I said it there. There, I said it. It's got way more elements than I can begin to discuss here in my short review. Listen for yourself. If you're like me you already know you like it. This is just some reassurance. Oh, and the LP got pushed to a 24th of October release so we only have the CD right now. Oh and since this is fairly a non-review I'll give you another heads up from my ears/guts - the TEETH 10" that's on this update is easily the most soothing disc to my inner bass fiend this week.

Exitmusic From Silence 12"

There’s a great deal of emotive passion on this EP. Originally a duo consisting of Brooklyn-based couple Aleksa Palladino and Devon Church, the addition of drummer Dru Prentiss and electronic musician Nicholas Shelestak enhances their forceful, provocative electronic sound. There’s an epic, dream-like sound throughout, as if it were recorded in a vast marble palace by the ocean. This ethereal sound, complete with breathy, resonant vocals, is reminiscent of bands like Sigur Rós. The vocals sound incredibly mournful; Palladino delivers them in a way that sounds like crying out her message so the whole world can hear it. It will be interesting to see what this group experiments with in the future. They certainly know how to convey the theme of loss, and make sure the listener knows exactly how they feel.

RazorxFade RazorxFade LP

RazorxFade is a straightedge outfit from Chicago, IL. Midwest Wolfpack.These dudes play fast pissed off hardcore with just the right amount of squealing feedback and plenty of punch-anything-that-moves mosh parts. They've got an early Boston influence for sure, but if you like bands like Tear It Up, Cokebust or even Colin Of Arabia, you'll probably dig this. Most bands coming out with this style shouldn't put out more than a 7" worth of material at a time (I feel this way about 75% of all hardcore). It gets old and boring fast, much better in little bursts. Not RXF, this 10 song LP is well written & structured and leaves me wanting more! I hope they make the trek to CT soon.

Basically, everything good you know about France was encapsulated in Serge Gainsbourg. Hell, he's probably what you think of when you think of France. Sophisticated and sexy and a smoking notorious lady's man (also, he was architecture - all right, maybe not everything good). Perhaps there are some negative connotations in there too. Perhaps that was all part of what made him interesting enough to have this movie made about him. Perhaps you've heard or seen the work of Serge's daughter, Charlotte. Perhaps you've heard his own work with Beck. He also made his own music (I am not leaving this as a given as I thought to initially).

Synopsis:

Best-selling comic book artist Joann Sfar delivers an inventive biography of famed French singer Serge Gainsbourg (Eric Elmosnino). Born Lucien Ginsburg to Russian-Jewish parents, Sfar follows him from his childhood in Nazi-occupied Paris, his transition from painter to jazz musician to pop superstar and his many relationships including Juliette Greco (Anna Mouglalis), Brigitte Bardot (Laetitia Casta) and Jane Birkin (Lucy Gordon) while employing a witty surrealistic style and a soundtrack that acts like a time capsule to ‘60’s Paris.

Elzhi (And Will Sessions) Elmatic LP

Elmatic... Illmatic. That's the essence of this - Elzhi's (pronounced EL - ZI (as in eye)) The Detroit take on Nas's quintessential New York classic. Outrageously bold to do this and then beyond bold to release it physically (and not just like a Wugazi joint - which in my opinion is worth only one full listen). I've listened to Illmatic more times than I can exaggerate about (a number so big that if I thought to exaggerate I might actually hit it on the head). I was listening to this while the last Detroit vs. Yankees game was on last night. "Detroit State of Mind" came on and destiny was sealed. Elmatic may never be the classic that Illmatic is (it can't be - it relies on that to exist), but it is a nice fresh approach and much more than a hot mixtape (not to undermine the worth of a hot mixtape). Illmatic in Detroit - plain and simple and great.

Matahari Never The Same 7"

(Get Young)

Get Young Records, CT's transplanted gift to Boston, brings us an EP by Matahari entitled, "Never The Same." It takes real balls to invest a few grand out of your own pocket to help propel someone else's band forward. And with releases this year by Cold Snap, Heavy Breath, and Canvas it goes without saying that Rich & co. deserve your respect and attention. I haven't heard Matahari before this and the bio I read online has them pegged for fans of Converge and Trap Them, but I don't hear that at all. Converge gets tagged on to so many band descriptions and pretty much no one ever sounds like them, except The Secret. They would certainly fit in well with the left-of-center hardcore scene of the early 2000s. With an intricate guitar vibe and zero dance parts Matahari bares more of a resemblance to bands just over the post-hardcore lines like Draw Blood, Defeater or maybe even some of the non-mosh Botch stuff.

Primus Green Naugahyde LP/CD

(ATO Records / Prawn Song)

Primus is one of those bands that’s truly inimitable; anyone trying to clone Les Claypool’s signature style, including songwriting, vocalizations and sense of wit, should expect to be labeled an obvious rip-off. He’s played in several bands since 1999’s Antipop, but Green Naugahyde is a true return to a form Primus has become known for (think the driving-tempo sound of Frizzle Fry and Tales From The Punchbowl, with additional ideas from Sailing The Seas Of Cheese.) Although it’s impossible to really “expect” anything from a band as insane as they are, they deliver what a typical Primus fan would look forward to: drug-injected funk-metal riffs, bizarre lyrics and, of course, lots and lots of ultra-dense, cool-sounding slap bass. Unlike the moshpit-ready jams of Antipop (they didn’t want to sound out-of-place at the Family Values Tour, after all,) the tracks on Green Naugahyde concentrate on head-bobbing funkiness (“Tragedy’s A’Comin’” and “Lee Van Cleef” are great examples of that uninhibited, deep-fried-in-cartoony-bass goodness.) Although Primus appear to have a pretty light-hearted demeanor, they have a strong grip on communicating dead-serious subjects such as our consumerist culture (“Eternal Consumption Engine”) and lamenting a friend doomed by drug abuse (“Jilly’s On Smack.”) All in all, this is strong addition to their discography, successfully maintaining their fun, uniqueness, and total insanity.

I (Rick) rated their album "All The Waters Of The Earth Turn To Blood" as one of my favorite of 2010 and their new CD with The Braveyoung ain't none too shabby neither. Man, there is a lot of tonnage going into the mysterious berth. May the vibrations not open the mouth of the Earth monster to swallow us all whole (actually, that'd be a pretty good story - may we live to tell it).

Bad Sports Kings Of The Weekend LP

This Denton, Texas trio plays straight-up fuzzy garage punk. Their sophomore effort Kings Of The Weekend is highly reminiscent of the earliest wave of punk, when bands like The Ramones were still crafting a faster, simpler and catchier evolution of rock n roll. There’s something really refreshing about that classic style of punk, where the songs are typically around 2 minutes (or shorter) and the biggest life concerns involve girls, not politics. The record kicks off with “Off Switch” – a high-octane rocker that jolts the listener’s attention before transitioning into the more traditional, poppier “Can’t Just Be Friends.” The fidelity stays true to the raw sound without drifting into excessive distortion. Other highlights include “Teenage Girls” (a great example of how these guys handle their early punk sound to help carve their own identity) and “I’m In Love With Myself” (who’d have thought a song about narcissism could be so catchy?) There’s not much else to say – this band stays true to form, and they rock hard in the process. I bet their live shows are a rush.

Dream Boat Widow LP

I've definitely been reviewing things lately that have a lot of similarities. I am noticing this now as I sit to write this review (well, a little before this). Melancholic and chill and electronic production heavy jams. Am I in a rut? More like a groove (Like a record, get it? Sorry, excuse that.). I thought about switching it up this week just for variety's sake, but this album is worth my time (and yours). The record label is in the Czech Republic and the music is very much off the radar of most music news outlets (blogs, magazines, etc.; note most, not all). Luckily for us all, AMDiscs does a good job at keeping their own site up to date (one which I check with regularity). I've just brought a slew of their physical releases into the shop and they are pretty varied themselves, but I am drawn to Dream Boat. I am drawn to them because it's in a style I enjoy (as noted), but also because they are somewhat local. Yes, it's true. I even asked them to play the Iceage show we did a while ago - unfortunately the scheduling wasn't ideal and it didn't work out, but I do hope to have them by sometime to perform. Providence, RI is where they call home though I know one of the two works in NYC (because of the conversation about the Iceage show and scheduling). Yea, so, this record: really great and chill and droned out at times, but also pretty upbeat for quick spells with some dubbed out beats and treated angelic-type voices; both masculine and feminine (not quite to the level of the chipmunk-like Balam Acab voices, but a similar idea). Czech it out (oof!).

Terrible Feelings Impending Doom 7"

I was having trouble finding something I really enjoyed to recommend this week. Don't get me wrong, plenty of new stuff came out this week that I'm sure rules, but for me nothing was doing it. Maybe it's a personal funk, drawing a blank, whatever. I took a stack of 7"s I wasn't familiar with on labels I generally enjoy and started my hunt. After a fistful of duds I landed on this new two song jammer on Deranged Records, originally released on Sabotage / Lack Of Sleep Records in Europe where they're already into the second pressing. Swedish band, Terrible Feelings, play moody, melodic punk with elements of surf rock; jangly guitars and minimal artwork comprised of upside down crosses on the inside = I'm sold. The song titles are "Impending Doom" and "Death To Everyone" and the lyrics don't get any more upbeat from there, but the vocals are the real stand out on this. The singer, Manuela Iwansson, has a beautiful, passionate voice that ties this all together.
