Nite Jewel One Second Of Love
[Buy Online From RSR]
(Secretly Canadian)
Originally from Los Angeles, singer-songwriter Ramona Gonzalez has been creating her brand of electronic/alternative dance music since 2008. On her second album, the improved production values suit the minimal instrumentation well: right from the beginning of opener “This Story,” her impassioned voice combines with a wall of lush synth and resonant, nuanced drum beats to create a sound that instantly reminds me of 80s pop balladry. That electronic style stands out to me the most, such as when it sounds mellow and cooled-down with “In The Dark” and drawn-out and glowing in “Clive.” Her voice is what really takes center stage, though: for example, she shows off its smoothness and versatility with several layers in the funky “She’s Always Watching You.” The deep and multi-instrumented “Unearthly Delights” is another good example of saying a lot with minimal instrumentation.

Perispirit Spiritual Church Movement
[Buy Online From RSR]
(Digitalis Recordings)
Describing the experimental music from Boston-based duo Ricardo Donoso (synths, electronics) and Luke Moldof (guitar, electronics) is no easy feat: it’s abstract noise, but also extremely complex and focused. Both tracks are roughly 15-16 minutes each, and interesting to interpret the meaning of the record’s religious theme. The jarring, stark and warmth-free “14th Annual Séance” feels like a wordless telling of something that’s clearly not right, such as being haunted by the ghosts of a bloodstained past. It’s expressed with what sounds like literally hundreds of different electronic samples, all starting and stopping with complete abruptness (many of these sounds only occur one at a time - sometimes overlapping, but mostly sticking to a totally minimal nature.) “Attn: Deficit Order” takes a different approach, starting off sounding like the first track but transitioning into melodic synth, more-playful electronic sounds and scattered beats that make it feel like some sort of oddly relaxing alien jungle… before switching back to an unpredictable mix of bracing, head-spinning and sometimes relaxing noises (and back again.)

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 8

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 8
(If you're seeing this on our home webpage [redscrollrecords.com] you're going to want to press the "Read More" link on the bottom to view the videos.)

The Devil's Blood was the most trance inducing live band I saw this year. Blood-soaked leather, the moans of a witch (The Mouth Of Satan) & an army of guitar players cast a serious spell on me. Do not miss them the next time they come to America. (Josh)

HEALTH "We are Water" from Eric Wareheim on Vimeo.

Eric Wareheim directed this and it's not in the style you might expect (unless of course you've seen this before, duh). That "Get Color" album from Health got a lot of play here when it first came out. As noted there is explicit content (gore) in this video so possibly NSFW; sets a mood and stays in it until the very end. (Rick)

Converge has been one of my favorite bands for the past 7 years or so, and they've been releasing quality material for the past 20+ years. They recently put out a split with grind legends Napalm Death, and have a new LP coming out this fall. Rumor has it they're playing around these parts in the coming months, so keep an eye out for that. (Sean)

We brought in some used Alice Cooper LPs today. Alice Cooper is a pioneer of hard rock who is a self proclaimed born again christian who loves golf and is well known for over the top stage theatrics including decapitations via guillotine. Check out this video for "Teenage Frankenstein". (Josh)

This is not pop music. Not music. Visceral powerful bliss to the right ears. I like to listen so loud that it physically effects me (full body massage). (Rick)

Xasthur with Nachtmystium! Black Metal! I'm seriously just adding exclamation points to the description of this video. Two great tastes that taste grim together.

I'll be the first to tell you I wasn't into "Visions" quirky pop upon my first listen (or 5th). What makes this more inexplicable is that I was entirely into "Geidi Prime" (Grimes's first album - I like the raw non-produced qualities) and her half of the split with D'Eon (still haven't heard "Halfaxa" though). Long story short, saw her and gave the album another listen. Turns out I think it's great. This most recent video reminds me that the NYC Comic-Con is happening the same weekend as the NYC RevFest 25th Anniversary dealio. (Rick)

Live Music: SunnO))) September 3rd (Labor Day Doom) w/ Redscroll Distro!

Live Music: SunnO))) September 3rd (Labor Day)
The REDSCROLL METAL DISTRO will be there!

Monday, September 3 2012

Club INT (map)
16 Broad Street
New Britain, CT

8:00pm - All Ages - $20

SUNN O)))
Sunn O))) is an American drone metal/experimental band based in New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA and formed in 1998. The band's core members consist of Stephen O'Malley (Khanate, Burning Witch, SARIN, Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine, Lotus Eaters, Ginnungagap, Thorr's Hammer, Fungal Hex, KTL, Æthenor, Gravetemple) and Greg Anderson (Goatsnake, Thorr's Hammer, Burning Witch, Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine, Brotherhood, Engine Kid, False Liberty, Burial Chamber Trio, Ascend). The band was formed as a tribute of sorts to Earth, another very heavy band noted as the pioneers of drone metal. G. Stuart Dahlquist currently of Asva and ex-Burning Witch performed bass on The Grimmrobe Demos and ØØ Void.

Dead In The Dirt
Dead in the Dirt was formed by guitarist Blake Connally (ex final expression, me and him call it us) in Dec. 2008. This project did not see much progress occur in the first two years until the addition of drummer Hank Pratt (foundation, daymark, skull kingdom). Bo Orr (Mosaic) would then join on bass and provide vocals as well. Their debut release “Vold”was self released in summer 2010. Their follow up release was a Tour EP for the band’s first west coast tour with Foundation. Their third release will be a 10 song 7” released by Southern Lord Recordings in September 2011.

Dead in the Dirt also played "here" (at the secret location near Redscroll) last September - it was a powerfully loud and fast good time.

Rick will also be playing records between bands (fun fact: Rick booked the first sunnO))) show with Manic Productions). Incidental music for talking over and making conversation about that is relevant in some way to the bands playing will be played (read that clunky sentence 5x fast).

Club INT is a new (a revitalized Sports Palace) club in New Britain and is very promising for the future of live music in CT.  The sound system is impressive and I know that Manic is bringing even more than what they already have there to accommodate sunnO)))'s requests completely! Here's a shot of its insides with As I Lay Dying playing:

The Redscroll mobile distro will be making a rare appearance here.  It may be the only one of the year! We'll be bringing plenty of metal (very focused selection), but if you want something specific brought to this please let us know (redscroll@gmail.com is the best way).

A Place To Bury Strangers Worship
[Buy From RSR]
(Dead Oceans)
Originating in Brooklyn (and sometimes called “the loudest band in New York,”) this noise-rock trio sounds hell-bent on simulating the atmosphere of being lost alone in a bleak, massive and likely haunted industrial park. Oliver Ackermann’s distant, echoed vocals rise like clouds of dust off a machine of screeching guitars, tightly structured basslines and frequently mechanized-sounding drums (interestingly, six people took turns handling the drums and drum machine work throughout.) Thankfully, APTBS doesn’t blatantly try to freak people out; instead, they rely on a shoegaze-rooted sound, helping them sound even more focused in their ominous art as opposed to being unnecessarily confrontational. Their self-restraint is impressive, considering the aggressive nature of elements such as shrill, bracing feedback and numerous bursts of mysterious, ghostly noise throughout (opener “Alone,” for example, kicks it off nicely by offering a generous helping of said bursts.) They even manage to incorporate some heavenly dream-pop elements (“Dissolved,” “Slide”), which fit shockingly well.

Tindersticks The Something Rain
[Buy From RSR]
(Constellation)
On their ninth record, this British chamber pop/indie band performs a dignified-sounding, multi-layered experience that I’ve come to expect from the label. Employing guitar, bass, percussion, cello, glockenspiel, multiple brass instruments and more, they create a warm, room-filling sound that taps into a wide range of emotions. It kicks off with the nine-minute “Chocolate;” a spoken-word account of a romantic encounter with a surprise twist, backed by a mellow keyboard and eventually climaxing into some spirited sax. “Slippin’ Shoes” is a great example of moody jazz instrumentation built on a smooth, catchy structure. My favorites also included the memorable guitar-hook utilizing “Show Me Everything,” which starts out mellow and goes intense and passionate toward the end, and the fast-tempo “Frozen,” with deep, melancholy vocals and a huge variety of sensual instrument layers.

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 7

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 7
(If you're seeing this on our home webpage [redscrollrecords.com] you're going to want to press the "Read More" link on the bottom to view the videos.)

True story: I (Rick) went to the Pacific Northwest a couple weeks ago and visited a few spots specifically because of their appearance in Twin Peaks. This week we got in the Eraserhead OST LP put out by Sacred Bones Records. These things are going fast (Sacred Bones already announced a second pressing). Get weird David Lynch style (get it quick though or wait until the 2nd press). [Update: we ran out of these and have an order in currently for the second pressing - we'll let you know when they're in.]

Flower Travellin' Band. Heavy psych that really should be mentioned in the same breath as many of their more well known western contemporaries. This live footage backs that statement fully.

We recently got in some used Pig Destroyer LPs ("Prowler In The Yard" & "Terrifyer"). It got me thinking about how excited I am to see these grindcore legends at Maryland Deathfest next year!

I bought a collection of cool classic rock LPs this morning (Alice Cooper, Bowie, The Who) from a guy who told me his son was Kurt Feldman who plays drums for The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (As well as in The Depreciation Guild and The Ic e Choir). When I told him I carried their records in my store he got real excited! It was nice watching someone have a proud dad moment. POBPAH play summery feel good indie pop jams. Check out this video for "Say No To Love".

It's no secret that I'm a huge Integrity fan & collector. So today is pretty awesome because, the repress (originally on Victory) of their 1995 release,"Systems Overload" on Organized Crime Records arrived. Dwid & Co. have built a 20+ year career out out of making dark and explosive metal influenced hardcore. Check out the video for the title track. Mosh your bedroom. (Josh)

The Codeine discography got the deluxe reissue treatment from the Numero Group recently - done extensively and well. 3 records with plenty of stuffing! (It's like Thanksgiving.)

"Vee Vee" was the first of the Archers of Loaf CDs/LPs to get the remaster and reissue treatment. We've gotten in a couple more since then (still have "Vee Vee" of course, but now also "White Trash Heroes" and "All The Nations Airports").

T-USED-DAY Update 8-14-12

14th of August 2012 T-USED-DAY Update
USED VINYL!

at Redscroll Records

The last time we did one of these (just a couple of weeks ago) it went over very well. Well, we got a lot more used records in since then. I want to stress that this update does not include everything we got in, but it does include certain categories of LPs (basically everything used that's not in the furthest back room - the room with the most used stuff is not included here; used CDs are also not included). Another quick disclaimer: by the time you see this some of it will most likely be gone. We only have one of each of these and cannot guarantee each and every thing will wait for you (GET HERE NOW QUICK!!!).

Phemale A Root Error CD-R/Zine
(Self-Release)
I've touted the talents of Phemale (formerly known as Female, but changed slightly in deference and respect to the techno artist veteran that also goes by Female) before. Phemale is a New Haven pop artist that could easily be lumped in with much of the revival of the cold minimal sound. This latest effort is perhaps the least minimal (far from Phil Spector however), but certainly not the least cold (one could argue, I suppose). These songs are good. They'll be out on cassette soon as well if you don't mind a little wait and that's your prefered format. I really don't need to speak too much more on this because you can listen to it all here: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Female/A_Root_Terror

Leila U&I
[Buy Online From RSR]
(Warp)
Iranian-born and London-based electronic artist Leila Arab has been active since 1993, when she got her start working with Björk. Leila began releasing her own records five years later, and her newest full-length is as energetic as it is dark and experimental, with loads of vibrating laser synth, bleeps, bloops and buzzes amidst a wide variety of thick, scattered and downright challenging-to-describe beats. Personally, it reminded me the most of stuff like Daft Punk and Digitalism (though with a lot more experimentation at points.) The songs range from irresistibly kinetic and danceable (“Activate I,” “Welcome To Your Life”) to druggy and nebulous (“In Consideration”) and even outright rhythmic noise that reminds me of Merzbow’s Merzbeat album (“Interlace.”) Her solo instrumental tracks stand great on their own, but American-born and Berlin-based performance artist Mt. Sims adds even more scope by lending his spacey, echoed voice to six tracks.

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 6

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 6
(If you're seeing this on our home webpage [redscrollrecords.com] you're going to want to press the "Read More" link on the bottom to view the videos.)

I really love the passion expressed in this. Four Tet knows what's up when it comes to DJ'ing and just generally filling that record bag (and "WOAH!" to a lot of those finds!). Pretty solid dude. And here's a bonus video of an actual song of his:

Our budz in Manic Productions announced a Sunn O))) (pronounced like the amps of the same name, btw) show recently and tickets have just gone on sale (we have them here for no service charge - as per usual with Manic shows). Check this video of them playing in a church (A Big Church! - but not so big that it needs to be entirely caps locked) in Belgium. The event listing can be found here. It's Manic's second show with Sunn O))) and if it's as memorable (and good) as the first you won't want to miss it.

Haven't posted a video yet today and Big L was in the corner of my eye and then "Ebonics" came into my head, but that one didn't get the video treatment so check out this other also impossibly great song. Hip Hop.

"Let The Right One In" (Swedish film not to be confused with "Let Me In", the American remake) was my favorite movie of the last 5 years. The film is the perfect balance of horror & love, accentuated by the beautifully dark atmosphere created in Johan Soderqvist's score. Recently, we got LPs of that score on Death Waltz Recording Co. Unfortunately, the song "Kvar I Min Bil" by Per Gessle is not featured.

Tonight, The Arc Agency has set up a sweet six band hardcore show in Milford consisting of three newer Deathwish Inc. bands (Punch, Living Eyes, & Oathbreaker) and three locals (Cold Snap, Hunger Strike, & Loach). I am most interested in wa tching Oathbreaker who play tight, gritty hardcore fused tastefully with elements of speed, doom, & black metal. They're here all the way from Belgium so make sure to check out their merch table!

The Shlohmo album LP "Bad Vibes" was on my (Rick's) best of 2011 list and it is still in my steady rotation especially on days/daze when I'm feeling a little spaced out (everyday). Solid laid back beats and atmospheres (honestly, more like good laid back vibes).

There is not one truth on CNN. Earlier today CNN had a story related to the Wisconsin shooting. They listed a bunch of white power bands. They included Hatebreed (very mistakenly). Here they are 17 years ago and looking it (straight off a VHS tape).

We post these videos daily on Facebook.com/Redscroll. Please "Like" that page if you are on FB. If you aren't on Facebook then these are here for you - posted weekly. Music is so extremely important and good.

Wye Oak Civilian
(Merge)
Named after Maryland’s state tree (which lived for centuries before being destroyed in a 2002 thunderstorm,) this Baltimore duo’s dreamy indie-folk transcends the image of just two people performing. Jenn Wasner handles the sensual lead vocals and electric or acoustic guitar, while Andy Stack does back-up vocals, drums and keyboards (often simultaneously, thanks to some creativity.) Their room-filling sound is luminous like streetlights competing with the darkness of night. The title track, for example, is a gorgeously somber lament with moving lyrics about loneliness (“I'm perfectly able to hold my own hand / but I still can't kiss my own neck.”) My favorite tracks included that one and “Hot As Day,” which don’t hesitate to drift into sequences of loud, shimmering shoegaze that remains rooted in the memorable melodies and intriguing lyrics (“when the days run long and late / darkness gives me pause while I lie awake.”)

The Chap We Are Nobody
(Lo Recordings)
It’s easy to classify this London five-piece as electro-pop, with their tight synth-driven melodies and subdued vocals. Apparently it’s a big transition from their previous work’s more prankster-oriented nature: though their synthesized tunes are arranged in a poppy and cozy manner, their lyrical themes include disillusionment and ennui. Right from the playful opening track, the vocalists cite the “Rhythm King” for not only helping them not only escape from darkness, but also find their hearts. The title track shines amidst its curious bleakness (“leave you all behind / paying for my crime / see me now / now you don’t.”) It’s an interesting juxtaposition of energy and controlled frustration. My favorite was “Hands Free,” which relies on mantra-like singing that demands surrender and getting one’s life back - or death - backed by punk-infused guitar chords and cymbal-crashing.

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 5

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 5
BLAMMO! Check these videos out!

Canadian experimental/electronic/pop duo, Crystal Castles have been around since 2004. For the last couple of years I've had both self-titled LPs in heavy rotation. Alice Glass has the vocal styling of a deranged cat...but I love it. Check out the video for "Baptism."

Manic Productions announced this morning that they would be bringing Japanese post-rock giants Mono back to CT(10/26 at The Space)! I was first blown away by Mono in 2003 when I caught their set by chance in a church basement in North Haven where they were opening for The Gloria Record.

Got a bunch of the Blur reissues in this past week. It was always weird that their biggest US hit ("Song 2" y' know, the WOOHOO! song) wasn't representative of the band at all (sort of like if you only know Radiohead as that band that did "Creep").

We recently got in a couple copies of Mercyful Fate - Denying Christ In Holland LP box set. It's recordings of two really early shows from from around Holland, and include a lot of great banter from King Diamond between songs. There have been some rumors circulating recently about some King Diamond shows happening in the US, which will hopefully come to light soon.

Psychedelic noise rockers, A Place To Bury Strangers are playing at The Space tonight (this was on Monday) thanks to our friends Manic Productions. Check out this video for "You Are The One" off their latest full length, "Worship."

Quicksand recently played in California at one of the 25th Anniversary shows for Revelation Records. They're also playing towards the end of August in NYC (heads up - check the internet search machines for exactly where and when). "Slip" is being reissued on LP and we'll have some of those in a couple months when they're out as well. (Those tickets sold out fast and we didn't get a one. Crossing fingers that another show in perhaps a bigger venue gets added.)

If you like Birthday Party like Slug Guts like Birthday Party then get infected by this whole album starting with this track like I have. Scrawling rock goodness.
