The True Story of the American Giant Red Squirrel (new t-shirt)

The True Story of the American Giant Red Squirrel
(new t-shirt)

The Indian giant squirrel is well documented. The American red squirrel is also very well documented. In the family Sciuridae there are myriad well documented species. There is one glaring omission: the American Giant Red Squirrel.

Here is an artists interpretation of the mythological Megared Squirrel:

I cannot stress enough how mythological this thing is. Megared squirrels are not real.  The Giant American Red Squirrel is not this big. Look at that thing. That's ridiculous. Do you think it could hide if it were actually that big?! Seriously, jeez!

The Giant American Red Squirrel is giant comparatively to other squirrels (of course), but not mythologically giant in comparison to large buildings.  Let's use record store terms to put it in perspective.  If a Giant American Red Squirrel were to be compared to a 12" record its head would be just smaller than one (basically like a human's, but y'know a squirrel).

American Giant Red Squirrels generally live by large bodies of water, are nocturnal and proportionally more skittish than their smaller counterparts (which makes them hard to photograph or study).

 [Squirrel Drinking Water]

While a small squirrel must drink some water to keep itself healthy a giant one must drink more water (thus living by large bodies of water; fresh water - did I forget to mention that the first time, well, it's large bodies of fresh water they live by).

Introducing the new Redscroll Records T-Shirt (as shown by Al):

The shirts are available
at the shop in sizes S-XXL and are $12 - printed on American Apparel by our friends at Print Indie and designed by our friend Todd Rogers (Teaessare).

[Read beyond the page break for the actual thinking behind the shirts or don't because you prefer the fun story of The Giant American Red Squirrel.]

Matthew Dear Beams

[Buy From RSR Online]
(Ghostly International)
Was born in Texas and moved to Michigan while he was a teenager.  In Michigan he was influenced by the Detroit Techno scene.  Dears style can be seen as glitch, techouse, and electronic avant- pop.  I believe Dears new album to have more of an electronic, indie, rock influence to it.  His newest album, Beams, has upbeat futuristic beats with dance floor ready tempos.  He companies his upbeat tempo and more than fun beats with his intense and deep lyrics that seem to be very personal to Dear.  This new album reminds me of a very upbeat and techno like TV on the Radio.  If TV on the radio was going to do a techno dance party on a spaceship, this is probably what it would sound like.  Dear's music contradicts itself in many ways, which he believes to be his different personalities shining.  Dear's music has changed very much throughout the years and this album is his most rock like album yet. Dear's many personalities are seen as his "Beams", hence the new album.  If you are ready to hop on the futuristic dance floor then Beams is a perfect album for you.

Jeff Loomis Plains of Oblivion

(Century Media)
Best known for being the lead guitarist of the progressive/thrash/neo-classical metal band Nevermore, Loomis further demonstrates his incredibly advanced techniques on his second solo record. Like one would expect from him, he manages to pull off an epic scope with a combination of white-hot shredding and soaring licks to craft songs that really feel like they’re telling a story (opener “Mercurial” sets the mood excellently by employing both aforementioned elements.) The lightning-speed “Escape Velocity” is another favorite, with several blasting breakdowns to punctuate the face-melting guitar chords. The acoustic, medieval-sounding “Rapture” demonstrates his flexibility well, with an array of complex string techniques. Loomis didn’t accomplish this all alone, though: he features an impressive roster of guest guitarists for solos as well, including Attila Vörös from Hungary (“Requiem For The Living”) and Tony MacAlpine from the U.S. (“The Ultimatum”), as well as ex-Megadeth members Marty Friedman (“Mercurial”) and Chris Poland (“Continuum Drift.”) Though most of the tracks are instrumental, he also invites guest vocals from Christine Rhoades (“Tragedy And Harmony” and “Chosen Time”) and Insahn (“Surrender”) to further punctuate the feeling.

Mono For My Parents

[Buy From RSR Online]
(Temporary Residence Records)
Mono is a band from Japan that has been experimenting with post- rock/instrumental rock since 1999.  Mono is made up of electronics, strings, chorus, a pianist, and a saxophonist.  This new album by Mono reminds me of a much calmer more fine tuned Explosions in the Sky. Not to get confused that they are any better or worse than Explosions.  Mono's instruments are just timed more particularly then that of Explosions and other Instrumental bands.  They are precise with their execution and because of this great harmonization the band sounds like a Japanese symphony.  While listening to the album I felt myself placing Mono in either a symphony hall or in a grungy rock hall.  Mono has moved into a brighter territory of music that is uplifting with their triumphant climaxes.  Their eruption of noise is much more tamed then past albums.  While listening to the album I felt as though I was watching a Japanese War movie (in slow motion).  The guitars feel as though they are melting out of the speakers and pouring into my ears. The album makes for a musically emotional roller coaster.  The light guitar repetitions along with the bombastic drums erupts into an uplifting climax in every song which makes the album somewhat soundtrack like.  This would be a perfect album to listen to on a long train ride home.

Porcelain Raft Strange Weekend

[Buy From RSR Online]
(Secretly Canadian)
Rome-born and NYC-based Mauro Remiddi is a composer, songwriter and musician: after a 2010 EP, this is the first full-length from his current project. Although his original band, Sunny Day Sets Fire, focused on indie-pop, Porcelain Raft is all about dreamy, atmospheric electropop. His warm, ethereal and lo-fi sound can be attributed to a combination of his wistful, echoed vocals with a varied, driving drum machine, bright-sounding acoustic/electric guitars and a generous helping of sensual synth. The end result sounds quite refreshingly natural, which isn’t an easy feat for an album based mainly on numerous electronic effects. My favorites include the twinkling opener “Drifting In And Out,” with a head-bobbing rhythm to complement the shimmering, descending synth notes. “Unless You Speak From Your Heart” takes a similar kind of drum pattern, with a greater focus on an easily memorable melody. Acoustic-based “Picture” is another unique standout, with the sunny guitar backed by a chunky hip-hop sounding beat.

(If you're seeing this on our home webpage [redscrollrecords.com] you're going to want to press the "Read More" link on the bottom to view the videos.)

ust got the latest Swans album in (3LP or 2CD+DVD). This is the title track; an 18 minute plus journey in sonic space. (We also got the Why? EP 12"s and Pallbearer LPs in today - among other things.)

WHY? - "A Sky For Shoeing Horses Under" from anticon. on Vimeo.

Just got some copies of the new Why? EP in. I like it. This is off the Alopecia LP which is my favorite. Hip-Hop Freak Folk. (Sean)

dead in the dirt is opening for Sunn O))) tomorrow night. They're one of the many recent crusty hardcore additions to the Southern Lord roster. I set up a show for DITD the last time they rolled through CT and they ruled. How could we not become fast friends with dudes who cover LEFT FOR DEAD then hang out for hours talking about DEATH IN JUNE & 100 DEMONS?

Happy Labor day! If you have today off and need something to do you should watch the somewhat recent documentary on Phil Ochs (I believe it's available to stream in a variety of places). Here's one of my favorites of his. (Rick)

We've got the new Cat Power Sun (Deluxe and regular LP as well as CD - on Matador Records) in the store today. Here's a little teaser directed by Chan Marshall herself.

Smoothed out jazz hop from the mid 90s. The album got the reissue treatment in a few ways recently. Most recently we got the instrumentals in. So nice. (Rick)

These Western-Mass./CT boys have been doing pretty well with the grunge-y garage melodic rock and roll (RIYL: Dino Jr.). This video also features their friend from home (CT's own Phemale as a mummy). We've got this jam on the cassette format currently.

We post these videos daily on Facebook.com/Redscroll. Please "Like" that page if you are on FB. If you aren't on Facebook then these are here for you - posted weekly. Music is so extremely important and good.

Donovan Quinn Honky Tonk Medusa

(Northern Spy)
Also known for his work with several groups (including The Skygreen Leopards, which he formed with Glenn Donaldson,) Quinn sounds moody, mellow and insightful on his third solo record. His music sounds like a mix of indie, folk and country styles: with his sleepy-eyed vocals, he sounds pleasantly content on songs like the warm, dream-like “Laughing City” (“every tail-light is a memory/ that burns a little candle for me.”) A few tracks later, “Dying City” provides a bleak but surprisingly calming perspective on the opposite, thanks to its gentle guitar and fittingly strong piano notes (closer “Love In An Evil World” also pulls off a somber, sky-wide atmosphere well with its synth.) Another track that I really enjoy is “Shadow On The Stone,” which starts out acoustic and rustic before incorporating a very country-perfect steel guitar. In addition to singing and playing the guitar and synth, he employs five other musicians: they include Papercuts’ Jason Quever (guitar and drums) and Odawas’ Michael Tapscott (keyboard, harmonica, harmonium and guitar.)

The Locust Molecular Genetics From The Gold Standard Labs

(ANTI-)
It’s hard to believe this San Diego grind/noise/spazz/whatever rock four-piece has been around for almost two decades. With their short, utterly chaotic songs using variously abused rock instrumentation (including some very unnerving synth) to kick down the rules of musical structure and incorporate snarky (not to mention puzzling) comments delivered in screams, they’ve proven to be quite polarizing to the uninitiated. Personally, I enjoy the uneasy listening that The Locust provides: even though the songs are insane (titles include “How To Become A Virgin” and “Twenty-Three Lubed-Up Schizophrenics With Delusions of Grandeur”), all the pieces fit together quite well. This isn’t outright improvised madness; it’s no surprise that The Locust’s tightly (and, of course, unconventionally) structured work has provided many with a bridge between more familiar forms of rock and the weirdo experimental world. This compilation features 44 tracks recorded between 1997 and 2003. Included, among other things, is their self-titled 7-inch EP, debut album and the Flight Of The Wounded Locust EP; contributions to split seven-inches with Arab On Radar and Melt Banana, and even a Queen cover: “Flash’s Theme” from the Dynamite With A Laserbeam tribute on Three One G.

Meet Kacie The Intern

 Meet Kacie The Intern

Hey guys! I am Kacie Bogan and I am the new intern at Redscroll Records.  I am a senior at Quinnipiac University.  I am a Media Studies major and I work at the radio station, WQAQ 98.1.  My aspiration is to work within the music industry; either by being on the radio, being a producer, doing public relations and more.  Redscroll Records is the perfect opportunity to get "my foot in the door" and see what it is like to work in a section of the music industry.  I am excited to learn more about this industry and work with other people throughout it.  You will be seeing me around the store, at events, and posting reviews.

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 9

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 9
(If you're seeing this on our home webpage [redscrollrecords.com] you're going to want to press the "Read More" link on the bottom to view the videos.)

Now that the Converge / Torche tour dates have been officially announced, we can talk freely about how awesome it is that they'll be stopping for a gig in New Britain. Torche is a Florida based stoner metal band that is more on the yellow-smiley-face-have-a-nice-day side of the spectrum then the worship-satan-through-reefer-smoking types. Check out this video for "Across The Shields." (Josh)

LE RÉVÉLATEUR / DATA DAZE from Sabrina Ratté on Vimeo.

Le Révélateur (Roger Tellier-Craig's moniker; he left Godspeed You! Black Emperor in 2004) has a release on NNA Tapes that we recently got in. This video is a pretty straightforward visual representation of the sounds. If you are prone to seizures you may want to just hit play and minimize the window (or click on a different tab; y'know, technology). (Rick)

A friend of mine just traded in a stack of cool hardcore 7"s, including the Magrudergrind "Owned" 7" on blue. Easily one of the top current bands in the genre. For 10 years now, this 3 piece powerviolence band from DC has been grinding all around the world. Check out this video for "Burden" which is comprised of live footage from Europe.(Josh)

We forgot to put a video up Saturday because we were too busy being stoked on Quicksand so I'll post the following and then another for today. Here's Saturday's set.

Weirdos who love hip-hop are generally the kind of folks I ride with. This 7" came out a little while ago and reminded me just how true that is. Get weird/stay weird. (Rick)

Ipsissimus is the finest black metal outfit to ever slither from Connecticut's fertile womb. Currently on a hiatus while their drummer is studying ancient scrolls abroad. We are very proud to have been able to release a live tape by them (of which we still have a small handful) entitled, "GoatCultRites" before they went on to Metal Blade.

This holiday weekend Brass City Boss Sounds is bringing a bunch of heavy hitting legends to CT for their 3 day event, 2000 Tons Of TNT FEST. For me personally, Negative Approach is the band I'd want to check out the most. Here they are just a couple years ago, old? sure, but still raging! (Josh)

We post these videos daily on Facebook.com/Redscroll. Please "Like" that page if you are on FB. If you aren't on Facebook then these are here for you - posted weekly. Music is so extremely important and good.

Nite Jewel One Second Of Love
[Buy Online From RSR]
(Secretly Canadian)
Originally from Los Angeles, singer-songwriter Ramona Gonzalez has been creating her brand of electronic/alternative dance music since 2008. On her second album, the improved production values suit the minimal instrumentation well: right from the beginning of opener “This Story,” her impassioned voice combines with a wall of lush synth and resonant, nuanced drum beats to create a sound that instantly reminds me of 80s pop balladry. That electronic style stands out to me the most, such as when it sounds mellow and cooled-down with “In The Dark” and drawn-out and glowing in “Clive.” Her voice is what really takes center stage, though: for example, she shows off its smoothness and versatility with several layers in the funky “She’s Always Watching You.” The deep and multi-instrumented “Unearthly Delights” is another good example of saying a lot with minimal instrumentation.

Perispirit Spiritual Church Movement
[Buy Online From RSR]
(Digitalis Recordings)
Describing the experimental music from Boston-based duo Ricardo Donoso (synths, electronics) and Luke Moldof (guitar, electronics) is no easy feat: it’s abstract noise, but also extremely complex and focused. Both tracks are roughly 15-16 minutes each, and interesting to interpret the meaning of the record’s religious theme. The jarring, stark and warmth-free “14th Annual Séance” feels like a wordless telling of something that’s clearly not right, such as being haunted by the ghosts of a bloodstained past. It’s expressed with what sounds like literally hundreds of different electronic samples, all starting and stopping with complete abruptness (many of these sounds only occur one at a time - sometimes overlapping, but mostly sticking to a totally minimal nature.) “Attn: Deficit Order” takes a different approach, starting off sounding like the first track but transitioning into melodic synth, more-playful electronic sounds and scattered beats that make it feel like some sort of oddly relaxing alien jungle… before switching back to an unpredictable mix of bracing, head-spinning and sometimes relaxing noises (and back again.)
