Bear in Heaven I Love You, It’s Cool

(Hometapes / Dead Oceans)
This Brooklyn indie trio first came into being as a solo project from Jon Philpot in 2003. With permanent members now, the band creates a lush sound that mixes krautrock, psychedelia and electronic ambience. Their third record was previewed on their website in an incredibly stretched-out form, with 2,700 consecutive hours of drone. Now at normal speed, it feels like an endlessly shimmering recollection of 80s memories, with resonant vocals, driving beats and countless layers of warm synth. “The Reflection of You” is an immediate standout, starting off with a jovial Animal Collective-sounding melody that becomes the foundation for moody walls of synth and confident lyrics (“there’s nothing left between us / so dance with me…”) I personally really enjoyed the glittering galactic sounds and cosmos-pondering lyrics of “Space Remains” as well. “Sinful Nature” takes a darker, sunset-into-night sound with a sadly echoing guitar amidst lyrics telling the listener to deal with life’s disappointments by getting drunk to “make strange things come true.”

Charles Gayle Trio Streets

(Northern Spy)
One of the most prominent figures in free jazz, the now 73-year-old Charles Gayle was homeless for roughly two decades before he started releasing albums in 1988. On his newest record in five years, Gayle lets his tenor saxophone flow freely while bassist Larry Roland and drummer Michael TA Thompson back him up. Gayle’s style incorporates loud, circuitous passages that shriek and contort wildly as the shadowy-sounding bass and kinetic drums bring together the controlled chaos (with the uncompromising closer “Tribulations” fitting the “chaotic” definition best.) Even with the lack of vocals, he successfully uses his instrument to express great fervor, such as the bright and spiritually motivated “Glory and Jesus.” His two supporting musicians stand out well throughout, such as Roland’s mournfully melodic strum solo in the second half of the title track.

Gift Ideas For the Holidays

Gift Ideas For the Holidays

Last year we put together a quick guide of easy suggestions for the music collector. That one surely still applies and can be viewed here: Gifting Holidaze

Please send your loved ones in with a list of desired music and we'll be happy to help them out. Here's the expert level to this one (the person giving you the gift would have to be at expert level): have the loved one come in and ask us for a recommendation based on some of what you already have in your collection (expert level is achieved when gift giver knows what you already have in your collection). Of course, returns and exchanges are accepted on all new unused/unopened LPs as well (returns must be accompanied with receipt).

The old stand-by, the Gift Certificate, is a fine choice as well. We can make it out for any amount you'd like (USD only; $55.00 or $55.25 or $50.52 or $2.55 or $5525.00 or anything at all you can think of like $32.00 or $30.20 or $23.00 or $2.30 or $32,000.00 for instance).

If you're looking for a gift for the vinyl aficionado in your life, but don't want to risk getting something that person may already have there are always vinyl care materials. No collection is complete without complete care. Plastic sleeves help to keep moisture out and self-wear away.  A record cleaning kit to brush the dust off of any record that has been accumulating a bit of dust. A new slip mat perhaps because the old one has seen it's fair share of use.

3ML $18.98 4ML $23.98 (100 Pack)

RCA Cleaning Kit $16.98, Slipmat $12.00

Spin-Clean Record Washer MKII $55.00

And we have a nice selection of used and new record players from $65 (a few used ones at this price) to $400 (Rega RP1) and lots in between.

And, of course, who doesn't love a nice Redscroll Records T-Shirt for $12?!

(Or a Hartford Party Starters Union shirt for $16 or a Needle Drop shirt for $15?!)

Here's a picture of our door with the penguin wreath:

And here's the books we sell that range from used novels of fiction to Hardcover documentations of specific music scenes/genres/...

And here's our front counter littered with santa hats:

Whatever it is you celebrate and whoever you celebrate it with we hope it is a super mega blast! If you don't celebrate at all we respect that and wish for you a super mega blast to come at no specific time!

Happy Holidaze from Redscroll Records and some of our extended family:

(Left to Right, Front to Back:Sean, Mario, John, Ben, Kevin, Al, Jack, Josh, Rick, Luc; Not Pictured: You! Please insert yourself using blingee! If you actually do that it would rule and please send it to us immediately.)

Azure Ray As Above So Below

[Buy Online from RSR]
(Saddle Creek)
This new album by the duo Azure Ray is a bit different from their previous.  Mostly known for their folksy/ indie vibe they have switched it up this time.  They are now expressing more of an electronic/pop sound that is even more dreamlike and haunting.  Their inspirations for this album can include James Blake, Nicolas Jaar, and Apparat.  While listening to the dreamlike album I felt myself swaying back and forth to their electronically calming beats.  Their beautiful vocals are quiet, yet captivating.  Their vocals are like whispers that can be heard in a dreamland.  Their lyrics are deep and melancholy.  They tell tales of lost love and despair.  The album seems to have its ups and downs of emotion throughout.  Their lyrics are contradicting; expressing moments of clarity and then moments of cloudiness and despair.  All in all, this new album is definitely a new step in a different direction for the duo.  Leaving their indie ways behind and starting a whole new feel to their music.  So far I can dig it, so let’s see what they come up with next.

Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine Shock-U-Py! EP

[Buy Online From RSR]
(Alternative Tentacles)
Ever since the Dead Kennedys broke up in 1986 (later reforming in 2001 without him,) Biafra has continued to prove that his fiery, very cool-voiced political observations remain alive through both spoken-word and musical projects. This EP with his latest band is the latter, having released their debut album in 2009. Even though the mainstream media now considers Occupy Wall Street to be unprofitable “old news,” Biafra stands firmly by the still-ongoing movement, saying that it “won’t go away until the problems are fixed.” He, of course, expresses his support for the movement, kicking off with the uptempo 7-minute-and-a-half-minute title track comparing modern-day demands to those of Great Depression victims petitioning FDR. He’s not afraid of impending controversy for criticizing “Barackstar O'Bummer” either, by expressing angry disappointment that it’s “Bush-ness as usual again” with the current president receiving money from banks through “that coin slot on his head.” The record closes with a remix of Biafra’s D.O.A. collaboration “We Occupy,” using a surprisingly bouncy, ska-type sound to encourage the public to fight to “take what’s ours.”

Parallel Thought ‎The Art Of Sound

[Buy Online From RSR]
(Parallel Thought Ltd.)
Considering the new wave of instrumental hip-hop that has been catching on in the hip-hop scene this album is able to fit right in.  This album has an electric/ electric hip-hop fusion feel to it. Parallel thought is a very dynamic producer and uses many different genres in his music such as jazz, American Indian flutes, and of course hip-hop instrumentals.  This album is full of hip hop beats over funky sounding beats and static vinyl sounds that give it an old school vibe.  “Suspended Animation” is my favorite track on the album.  On this track Parallel uses flutes over a static hip-hop beat that give an enchanting feeling to the song.  This album is a nonstop head mover.  If you happen to be a fan of Flying Lotus then you would love Parallel Thought.  Along with Flying Lotus, Parallel thought is a beginning to instrumental and experimental hip-hop.  With the new technology we are receiving everyday this type of hip-hop is only going to get more explosive.  This new album is totally spacey and tropical at the same time.  Many of the songs make me feel like I’m floating in space as well as walking through a very trippy tropical forest in the dark of the night.  That description might be a little out there for some of you however, play this album and then tell me how you feel.

WFMU Benefit Record & CD Fair!

WFMU Benefit Record & CD Fair!

WFMU was named "Best Radio Station in the Country" by Rolling Stone magazine for four consecutive years.  Some fans of the station include: Velvet Underground founder Lou Reed, The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and playwright Eric Bogosian, Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Mangum, Kurt Cobain, Led Zeppelin lead singer Robert Plant, Sonic Youth guitarists Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore, and many more.

The station also helps out the community and fellow radio stations.  WFMU began voluntarily hosting the webcast of legendary New Orleans jazz music station, WWOZ, when its studio and transmitter were destroyed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.  WFMU took donations for the WWOZ and raised over $70,000.

In the destruction of Hurricane Sandy WFMU was hit pretty hard.  They lost a lot of equipment and had to cancel their annual record fair.  The fair is one of their major sources of funding.  In effort to help out the station a record swap is being held (organized by our friend, Malcolm Tent of Trash American Style):

Sunday, December 9 at Bar 82. Bar 82 is located at

136 2nd Ave, in Manhattan

The swap starts at 3 PM and goes until "???"

The bar will be opened accompanied by entertainment from some of the city’s best DJ’s.  If anyone would like to be a vendor at the event they must contact Malcolm Tent Updates on the event and more information: https://www.facebook.com/events/304000386366133/

Come help support a good cause!
