Dubey Family Benefit Show (RSR Early Close Sunday at 5PM)

Dubey Family Benefit Show
On Sunday, April 3rd, 2011
6PM, $10 Minimum Donation
Toad's Place
(300 York St., New Haven, CT)

We (Redscroll Records) will be closing at 5PM
in order to help out and attend.

This past Thursday's tragic events have brought a rather large network of people together in support of a family that could use some right now.  (Check the link and all the links within to read up on the situation.)

Advanced tickets are available online through Etix's cooperation with Manic Productions (generously done with no service charges).

We (REDSCROLL) will be open early at 8AM tomorrow (Thursday) to sell tickets for those who do not have credit cards (cash only).  We have been allotted 50 tickets. We will keep you updated if availability becomes an issue (let's hope we do sell them out!).

At this event there will be further fund-raising efforts.  Little Vegan Monsters is bringing some baked goods.  A friend is setting up a donation music distro (music donated to sell).  Prints made by Ben Sears are being made of the house dog, Ruby.

[I deliberately chopped this to preserve the integrity of the finished product; looking much more impressive in person.]
There is also a shirt design being screened:

I'm betting there will be more as well.

And, just so it is completely clear (though the ever-present assumption would be correct) all proceeds from all of these sales are going directly to the Dubey Family.

If you cannot attend and would like to help out Mitch's sister Lauren is collecting via paypal (Lauren.Dubey@Gmail.com).

Spread the word to everyone you know.

Iron Hand - Usurper Divine 7" (RSR010) Out Now!

Iron Hand Usurper Divine 7"
(RSR010)
Out Now!
(front)

(back)

We talked to our friends in Iron Hand a good while back about doing this 7" with them.  The time is finally here.  A 7" record with four righteous tracks of crust d-beat loving hardcore.  The band features current and past members of They And The Children, Estrogen Highs and Last Words (as well as a bunch of others).  Keep up to date with Iron Hand live dates on their blog

Iron Hand is a crust/d-beat hardcore band from Connecticut incorporating past and contemporary influences within the genre, such as Discharge, State Of Fear, and Crow.  Lyrically, the band addresses its sociopolitical criticisms while also taking opportunity to address personal introspection.

The most immediate and notable show is their record release.  It's happening April 16, 2011 (which happens to be Record Store Day).

Iron Hand Usurper Divine 7" (RSR010)
$4.50 (+ Shipping in the U.S.)

[International orders please email redscroll@gmail.com for quote.]

Also available in the shop, of course!

Apologies to anyone who used the button attached to a large shipping quote. I've now attached a fixed shipping price ($2) for all of the U.S. If you've already paid with the higher shipping we will send you your 7" with a couple bucks to refund the excess shipping amount. Thanks all.

Converge Jane Doe LP/CD
Equal Vision 61 / Deathwish Inc 172
Converge was way ahead of the curve when Jane Doe was originally released. It debuted in September 2001 when the country was in a very fragile state, and took a new approach at what they had already mastered. Before Jane Doe, Converge released a few albums that had limited structure but were very thrashy and abrasive, with a few surprises here and there. This was a turning point for them, because they seem to focus more on the melody and structure as opposed to the sheer chaos their earlier albums had, and progress even further with each album after Jane Doe. Originally released on Equal Vision, Jane Doe sold out pretty quickly and became a very sought after record. It wasn't until 2010 that it was given a reissue by Deathwish Inc, singer Jake Bannon's label. The reissue came in a slew of different colors listed below, and comes in a gatefold jacket with a thick booklet that includes lyrics and artwork. This is a must for any fan of the genre. Get it while it's still in print.

Crime Desire Alone In A Dream 12"EP
Gravity / Life's A Rape Records
Crime Desire is a 3-piece band from California who play straight forward riff-driven hardcore punk. These guys have a bunch of records out (of print) at thispoint and this newest ep is complete with the staple gruff vocals & steady drum beat which you've come to expect, but then there are parts that make this unpredictable; guest vocals by Gitane Demone (Christian Death) & her daughter come in with wails, shrieks and muffled background noise. I like where this was headed and wish it was longer than just the 5 songs presented. I'm also really happy that in the year 2011, there is boundary pushing artsy hardcore worthy to be at least partially brought to us by the same label that gave us Heroin, Antioch Arrow, & Angel Hair. (FFO: Black Flag, F#cked Up, Failures)

Davila 666 Tan Bajo LP/CD
In The Red (ITR204)

Those devoted to any sect of garage, from the 60s to now, will be sure to appreciate what Puerto Rican rockers Davila 666 are doing on their latest album, “Tan Bajo” (“So Low”). This album rips from start to finish. After a brief opening track bearing the same name as the album, Davila 666 launch straight into “Obsesionao,” a song whose opening riff seems to have been lifted straight from some badass 60s spy film or like it could be a secret agent’s theme. “Noche De Terror” and “Patitas” are awesomely raucous party jams, while the band shows they can be tender, too, on “Yo Seria Otro,” one of their slower tunes. Overall, this album is really stellar, with no weak points to be found throughout its 14 tracks. And while yes, it is sung entirely in Spanish, language is certainly not a barrier to enjoyment here—you’ll probably even find yourself singing along.

Nicolas Jaar Space Is Only Noise LP/CD
Circus Company (CCS055)
Downtempo electronic music is the most concise way to describe this. Beyond that, the album runs a wide breadth from Arthur Russel styled weird folkish songs to trip-hop influenced head bobbers to ambient mood pieces. The instrumentation beyond the electronic base is quite varied. It's a somber virtuous record and even further impressive considering Nicolas is a junior in college right now.

Vaccine Crimes in Blood 5”
Painkiller Records 033

Vaccine is a power-violence band from Massachusetts featuring members of Think I Care, Relics, Failures and Ampere. This 5” marks their third release and is about 2 minutes long. This record proves that a lot can be done and said in a very short amount of time. It's 5 songs with topics ranging from political scum, to animal rights, to the BP oil spill, and it doesn't slow down at all. It keeps up a fast and brutal pace for the entire release. My only gripe with this band is that all their releases are over in just a couple minutes. I know that demos are just supposed to give you a taste of the band, but I want more. Fingers crossed for an LP to come out soon.

Movin' Like Bernie

Movin' Like Bernie
In the movie Weekend at Bernie's 2 Bernie (the cadaver) at one point is put under a voodoo spell that causes him to sort of dance and move about like some wacky not-so-disgusting zombie (without the taste for flesh).  He does a conga line at one point.  It's zany.  Check it out:

Now somehow it took about 20 years for that to really hit home with someone and become a dance craze. I don't question it as a dance craze in the slightest. I only question why it took so damn long!

That came out October 2010. It hit America by storm (over 2 million youtube hits!). One month later at the Blackout Sale at Redscroll Records I filmed a bunch of people movin' like Bernie. A few months later and I'm finally getting around to putting it on the internet where it belongs.

11th of March 2011 Update

11th Of March 2011 Update of New and Key Restocked Items
at Redscroll Records

Quick update about Record Store Day: Holy crap, it is fastly approaching.  I know it's still a good month and 5 days away, but we're already deep into preperations. Orders have gone out (more to come).  We're organizing some great give-aways for the goodie bags (so you're not just stuck with a bunch of promo material - last year was admittedly lackluster on that front and the reason we're being pro-active about it ourselves.).  So, yea, get psyched! Don't forget, our 4 Year Anniversary is on April 12th and it marks the beginning of the week long sale (20% Off Everything) and then Saturday, April 16th is Record Store Day (special hours that day only = 10AM-10PM).

(Reviews at the bottom. One by Rick.  Two by Josh.  None by Sean [SLACKER!].)

Cro-Mags The Age Of Quarrel LP
(Deluxe Reissue Ltd. Ed. +3 Bonus Tracks) Mightier Than Sword Records
The Cro Mags changed the face of hardcore forever by perfectly fusing elements of hardcore with thrash-metal, inspiring thousands of bands who couldn't hold a candle to the original. Singer-turned-author John Joseph's lyrics are urgent, "I know there must be more than the struggle and strife Cause I'm looking for the answers and I need a clue Cause my mind's so disturbed now what do I do?".The Age Of Quarrel is a NYHC classic originally released in 1986 and arguably one of the most important hardcore albums of all time. This limited edition remastered 180 gram pressing comes as a gatefold and features three bonus demo tracks from 1984. 100 solid black, 400 clear red/solid black swirl, and 500 clear red = ONLY 1,000 PRESSED! (FFO: Bad Brains, Motorhead, Agnostic Front)[Reviewer: Josh]

Ritual Kissing Pavement 7"
Reflections Records
This two song single is a great introduction to Germany's Ritual. These guys play emotional hardcore punk with gruffly screamed lyrics. Through the songs & six photograph booklet, "Kissing Pavement" seems to be a concept of sorts showing the balance between natural & urban elements. Limited to 500 copies. (FFO: Modern Life Is War, Burning Love, Blacklisted) [Reviewer: Josh]

Teams vs. Star Slinger Teams vs. Star Slinger LP
(Ltd. Ed. + D/L /2000) Mexican Summer Records
Star Slinger [UK] has been busy these last months making a name by dropping remix after remix.  As you might expect with such a deluge of material, none of it really stood out to me.  A lot of it good and some not really hitting me, it all gets lost in itself. Those aren't physical releases though (with probable reason).  This release with Teams (the US counterpart who I'm honestly not familiar with beyond this) is a physical release. It's three songs per side of a 12" record (2x3=6 total). It's not enough.  I keep looking for the second LP to put on so I can hear six more.  It doesn't exist.  I end up playing it from the beginning again and loving it over and over (which is entirely appropriate - read on).  So, what Teams and Star Slinger do here is take some solid soul classics and some more recent R&B and run them up full of loops and drum hits and edits. Not exactly full on remixes and not what would classically be called a blend (but perhaps closer to that).  It retains the soul and impact of the original songs and drops them in a glitch-hop processor.  Head bobbing panty dropping jams (loving it over and over again, y' dig?). [Reviewer: Rick]

Creep Days 12" (YT053)
This track might have originally found an audience with the barage of witch house tracks that came with the inception of the genre title.  This is way too upbeat to dwell solely in those confines, however.  It's a solid dance single with a completely interesting intro track and a couple solid remixes by Deadboy and Azari & III on the B side. They even have a video made by half of Fischerspooner (fittingly methinks).  Definitely leaning towards the house half of the witchy stable this project brainchild of the DJ Lauren Flax is the brightest black star under the blood moon (and feel free to add diametrically opposed light/dark descriptions).

Sunday 6PM: Haunted Continents, Eurisko, Frost Watson

Haunted Continents, Eurisko, Frost Watson
For the Love of Connecticut
6PM Sunday, March 6, 2011 Meet at the store / $5 Suggested Donation

||Facebook Event||

Haunted Continents stems from a pretty simple idea: mix 50s bop and soul with 90s alternative. But it's not like Buddy Holly playing Weezer tunes; it's more like the other way around. Or maybe it's a concoction of both, you know? Either way, the tunes are catchy, the guitars are heavy and The Loudest Year is thirty-one perfect minutes of fuzzed-out vintage rock and roll goodness ... a perfect winter companion for heart-broken lo...vers and nerdy fan boys through out the land.

Eurisko is a 5-piece rock band from the greater New Haven/Waterbury area that formed in early 2010. Since their inception they have developed a sound soaked in whiskey, multi-layered guitar riffs, and grim lyrics. Influenced primarily by folk and indie rock, Eurisko’s music spans from quickly paced melodic ballads to deep, creeping songs carrying shipments of woe. Combining three guitars, bass, and drums, Eurisko sets the scene for the dynamic narratives that characterize their unique style of songwriting. Eurisko has drawn comparisons to Tom Waits, The Decemberists, Murder By Death, and Bright Eyes.

Frost Watson have the sound of pop punk in the '60s. They're from PA and NY. Come check them out. Check everyone out. See you Sunday.

Check It: Waylon Recordings

Waylon Recordings
Waylon Recordings is a pretty new label. And while the facebook page may espouse Montana as its home, the fact is it's just at home in Connecticut (or moreso).  One driving force behind it is known from his Northern (not-so-much-of) Failures

"The label was founded by Christian McKenna (Slacks, Empty Flowers, 1965, Translation Loss Records) and Randy Larsen (Empty Flowers, Slacks, Cable)... They are solely interested in releasing trendy, hip bands that will make money."

That last part is pretty pretty funny indeed.  So far they've released a CD by Slacks (themselves), Serpent Throne and Total Fucking Destruction.  Hip and trendy?  Not exactly (they've even still got myspace pages - links at the end of the post).  Good?  Exactly.

They've just got a few CDs out as yet, but they are a pretty solid grouping.  And you can find them all here (at the store), of course.  A couple more tidbits: T.F.D. features Rich Hoak (legendary drummer of grind godfathers Brutal Truth) and Translation Loss Records has been partnered up with them for all of these so far (which should give you an idea of the quality and direction).  I'm looking forward to more quality releases from this camp.

Yuck S/T, in stock now!

Yuck Yuck

If you're looking for some straight up feel-good indie rock, this new release is sure to weasel its way into your playlist soon if it hasn't already. Yuck's self-titled album on Fat Possum Records is a totally solid debut, chock full of catchy 'singles' like songs "Georgia" and "Get Away." Hailing from England, Yuck captures a really "90s" tone and certainly wears their influences on their sleeve (think Dinosaur Jr., a little Sonic Youth, or, maybe even Silversun Pickups), but they definitely take those well-worn paths and turn them into their own unique sound.
