Brain Killer Every Actual State Is Corrupt LP
(Deranged Records)

I've been trying to snag a copy of this record since it came out last month, but as soon as we open up the boxes, these get bought up almost instantly. Brain Killer is a hardcore band from Boston, MA that plays fast, crusty & extremely noisy (tons of whirling feedback!). Generally for this type of stuff I prefer a 7" worth of material, but these dudes keep it interesting and varied through out enough where I can't help but pay close attention. Hopefully you'll have the privilege of being made deaf by Brain Killer in a basement somewhere soon. (FFO: Gauze, Disclose, Deathreat)
Playing in Hartford soon: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=198471190188258

Delayscape Morse Disco CD
(Anna Logue Records)

This came out late last year on a small import label dedicated to synth music (generally of a more pop variety - though not of the popular radio variety).  It's a pretty excellent label and I may do a spotlight feature on it in the future.  For now, I'm letting you know about this excellent electro double disc set by Delayscape.  Delayscape lays down thick chunky (yes, the redundancy is necessary) synth lines with generally pulsating beats.  Elektro, even, with a Detroit techno influence.  Think of Legowelt or Drexciya or even DMX Krew. Jam.

Spotlight: Safety Meeting Records (Sampler Download!)

Safety Meeting Records, run by Carlos Wells, is Connecticut's best resident label. Using the Dischord method of focusing on bands primarily from his area, Carlos has given New Haven's local music scene, especially, a huge hand up. This label is not genre specific. Their roster includes everything from psychedelic folk to lo-fi garage rock to d-beat hardcore. The actual releases themselves are beautifully packaged vinyl records that also include a CD copy. Safety Meeting has a consistent stream of releases.  What more could you ask for?

If you were lucky enough to get one of our goodie bags on Record Store Day, then you got the new 2011 Safety Meeting Sampler CD. We still have a handful left at the shop, so swing by and grab one.  Here it is also available for stream/download:

  1. M.T. Bearington "Dark Night"
  2. Estrogen Highs "Kings Run Errands (For Me)"
  3. Iron Hand "Liquid Assets"
  4. Mick Barr "Cveather"
  5. Fake Babies "LA"
  6. Blood Warrior "Blood Letting"
  7. Quiet Life "No Surprise"

    22nd Of April 2011 Update & Reviews

22nd of April 2011 Update of New and Key Restocked Items
    at Redscroll Records

You might notice that some of the Record Store Day stuff is part of this update.  Yes, that is what we have left.  In some cases we have actually acquired it after Record Store Day.  Some we even traded for with other record stores.  We tried to grab as much as we could of that stuff.  First come, first serve for any of that.  (Note about this: Store prices reflect whatever we have paid for these so some may have gone up and some may have gone down.)

    Burn 7"
    (Revelation Records)

Burn's first seven inch was released in 1990 on Revelation Records and marked a new era for New York Hardcore. This was way ahead of its time, with unmatched drumming and difficult “90's” riffs. This is up on my top 5 NYHC releases, and came out when Revelation was straying away from the almost formulaic (but still awesome) hardcore releases and getting into weirder stuff. Up soon after this release was the debut of Into Another, so you get what I mean.

Originally out in 1990 on Black vinyl and limited Pink vinyl (/1000), this has finally been reissued for RECORD STORE DAY. It's now on Yellow vinyl, and limited to 1000 copies.
[Reviewer: Sean] [Note: We have a very few of these left and when they are gone they are gone for good.]

Discordance Axis The Inalienable Dreamless LP
(Record Store Day Repress On Hydra Head Records)

The name Dave Witte is what will first give you an idea of what this is.  His 2nd great grind band (Human Remains being the first).  Mathematically precise.  Honestly, this is a bench mark and I should be using this as a reference point rather than telling you what other things sound like it.  Every technical grind band that has come after owes a debt to these guys.
[Reviewer: Rick][See note about the Burn 7".]

    Easter Sunday: We'll be CLOSED

We'll be closed this coming Sunday, Easter.
There will be far too many bunnies on the road and I don't want to endanger any of you by tempting you to come in to the shop that day.  Also, there will subsequently be no parking at all in our lot anyway due to the bunnies' destination being the church next door to us.

    Enjoy your Sunday.

Record Store Day Update / 15th of April Update

    RECORD STORE DAY UPDATE
(in addition to the regular update)
15th of April 2011 Update of New and Key Restocked Items
    at Redscroll Records

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT RECORD STORE DAY RELEASES:

Record Store Day is now in its 4th year of existence. Conceived in 2007 (when we opened doors!) and then put into action in 2008 for the first time.  It has grown exponentially.  More and more limited releases come out each year. The demand has also increased.  The number of stores taking part has also increased exponentially. The numbers for each release have not increased.  We ordered much more than we received.  We are working to make this as great as possible.  We understand the frustration that comes along with all this.  We can't fulfill everyone's desires, but we're striving to come close.  We hope you appreciate it.

A few select items will not be available here in time for tomorrow.  The DODOS release was not pressed in time.  The Discordance Axis LP will be in our shop on Monday. The Glassjaw has also reportedly been pushed back for release later. The PHISH Soundcheck release will be in our shop sometime next week (NOT TOMORROW unfortunately).

The goodie-bags we have came out great and well stocked.  There are a few variety of bags.  First come, first serve.

AND DON'T FORGET - 20% OFF EVERYTHING UNTIL SUNDAY NIGHT!

Here are the details for the Iron Hand Record Release Show:

We here at Redscroll released a 7" for Iron Hand late last month.  Here is the post where we announced it: http://redscrollrecords.blogspot.com/2011/03/iron-hand-usurper-divine-7-rsr010-out.html

For the show, meet at Redscroll Records (24 North Colony ST. Wallingford, CT) to be directed to the secret location (hint: it's not hard to figure out - the answer is right under your feet really).

IRON HAND (CT crusty hardcore. FFO: heavy jams!)

VACCINE (Straightedge powerviolence from Western MA)

CONFINES (Boston hardcore. Members of: Brain Killer, Social Circkle, Blank Stare, Failures and Cut The Sh!+)

    GOWL (CT noise grind)

    $ = donation. gas ain't cheap.

    INVITE A FRIEND! MOSH AROUND!

And check this interview and live video that aired on The CT on WTXX (local T.V.):

    Colin McEnroe Show and More

Today's Colin McEnroe Show (on 90.5 FM WNPR) was on the subject of Record Stores.
The show's in-studio guests were Malcolm Tent (Trash American Style, Ultrabunny, WNHU Radio), Brendan Toller (Documentarian, I Need That Record), and Doug & Mary (Replay Records).  Dan (Mystic Discs) called in and so did Josh (Redscroll!) and so did a few fans of vinyl.

If you didn't get a chance to hear it live, do not fret, it is available here:

Malcolm Tent (http://www.malcolmtent.net/) will also be performing live here at the shop on Record Store Day (Saturday) at 6PM.  He'll be bringing his sparkly blue acoustic guitar and reveling listeners in song. It's actually his second stop of the day - his first will be at 3PM in Brookfield at Gerosa Records.

And on Sunday, at 4PM on the campus of Wesleyan University Josh, Malcolm, myself (Rick) and others will join in a viewing and discussion of the film I Need That Record.
Information is also up on the WESU FM website here: http://wesufm.org/

Reminder: Sale Starts Tuesday, Ends Sunday

Reminder: Sale Starts Tuesday, Ends Sunday
    April 12, 2011 - April 17, 2011
    20% Off Everything!

We've been working pretty hard to get our store as well stocked as possible.  The shelves are quite literally running out of space so there is definitely a good amount to choose from.

We kick off the sale Tuesday.  Why Tuesday?  Well, because that is our exact anniversary date.  We opened our doors on April 12, 2007 (4 years ago).  We're going to go bowling at closing too (8PM).  Please join us.  We're going to Wallingford Bowl (they close at 11PM and we'll definitely be there until then).  They've also got some arcade games, a snack bar (soft pretzels, soda, nachos, ...) and a regular old bar (adult beverages).

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday the sale continues during our normal store hours (12PM-8PM).

Saturday is Record Store Day.  We'll be open from 10AM-10PM on this day.  There are a ton of R.S.D. exclusive items we'll be getting in.  A list of those will be posted by Friday.  Please check back if you're wondering what we're getting in.  Our goodie-bags for this day are coming together rather nicely.  There are a lot of different goodies and not every bag is going to be the same.  It will be completely luck of the draw about what you get.  They will be given to every customer until we run out of them.  Check out what you and your friends get and mix, match, trade and have fun with 'em!  As with previous years we'll be having some end of the night festivities (HINT).

And then Sunday we conclude the sale during regular hours (12PM-6PM).  History has shown that plenty of great records will be here this day.  If you cannot make it until Sunday then it will be well worth it to come.  As with every week, deliveries will be coming throughout so our stock will continually be replenished and changing.  We're excited!  I hope it's contagious.

Trust Candy Walls / Trinity 7"
    (Sacred Bones Records)

Mastered at 45RPM, this thing is short so this review will be too.  Sweet melancholy jams with a couple extra saccharine synthesized lines.  Solid.
    [Reviewer: Rick]

    Vaccine Human Hatred  7”
    (Painkiller Records)

Vaccine offers up ten, fast & heavy hate-fueled straightedge powerviolence songs in just over four minutes. The opening track, “Your Life’s A Joke” takes a non sympathetic stance on drug users and perfectly captures the bands overall aggressive attitude. When I hear lines like, “DISGUSTING PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT / HAVE ANOTHER DRINK / BLOW ANOTHER LINE / LEARN TO FUCKING THINK / GROW A FUCKING SPINE”, I want to X up & run into somebody fist-first. In addition to being the bassist of this outfit, Will Killingworth also handled the recording duties at his studio, DEAD AIR. Will is a master of raw-sounding hardcore recordings. The band features members of FAILURES, GLUE, AMPERE, & RELICS.

    Xander Harris Urban Gothic LP
    (NNF223)

If you know me at all (I'm Rick) then you know I have an affinity for soundtracks and specifically the whole Italo-Disco HOrror variety of those (not really like American 80s films, but not necessarily not those either - catch me in the right mood).  Xander Harris (guise of a man from Texas) fills my hunger for exactly that niche.  This is actually titled as a soundtrack to an analogous horror movie with song titles to match the opening and closing credits and scenes in between.  There are moments when he vears towards EBM (samples laid in over them actually remind me of the better parts of Velvet Acid Christ [do yourself a favor and don't research that]).  This one has actually been in my rotation for a while - he was gracious enough to send me out a CDr and tape late last year. I'm glad Not Not Fun got ahold of this and added some really nice packaging to the deal.  Looks good.  Sounds good.

    Go For Broke #2

Reviews (2 Quick Ones By Rick)

    Iceage New Brigade LP
(DAIS020 /500 First Press on black vinyl - Second Press on not-black vinyl is already in the works.)

Originally released by Escho in Copenhagen this pressing by Dais includes two tracks not on that release.  They are good.  Honestly, all of these songs are great.  "Broken Bone" might have the catchiest hook of them all though I would never do myself the disservice of just playing that one track on repeat.  This whole record was on repeat for me for a few days upon first getting ahold of it.  It's rock and roll in a minimal style with a dark slant.  It actually reminds me a bit of These New Puritans if they were to strip away all the excess. I'm going to throw this on right now - again.

Mater Suspiria Vision Crack Witch LP

(LT021 /300 on black vinyl & /200 on white vinyl)

Have you heard the whispers of witch house?  Have you already written it off as a flash in the pan?  Is the genre's name too irksome for you to bother with?  Mater Suspiria Vision have been the most prolific band within this genre. Among the great bands with that label they might be the only that fully embraces it and does not work against it like some rebellious angsty tween-ager telling off their folk's or teachers. "You can't label me.  I'm a square peg and you're trying to fit me in a round hole!"  Corny analogy, but you get it.  Slow down.  I wish this record was mastered at 45RPM so I could slow it down even further.  It is some serious mysticism.  Italian horror movie, reverb, delay, repeat, sample loving sounds from the depths.  (Aquarius Records did quite a comprehensive review here: http://www.aquariusrecords.org/.)
