Clusterfuck / Cojoba (Split) 7"
(Computer Crime Records)
This seven-inch EP unites a double-dose of unique hardcore punk flavors from two bands typically separated by over 1,600 miles of the Atlantic Ocean. Formed in Bridgeport in late 2003, Clusterfuck represents CT by delivering three fast-tempo songs with plenty of sarcasm and fun. The subversive lyrics focus on mocking crappy image-driven radio rock and suggesting that all humans should be killed to make “Bone Mulch” for growing flowers. On the other side, Puerto Rico’s female-fronted Cojoba (which I first heard years ago on a Cry Now, Cry Later compilation) takes a more serious approach with their two lengthier songs. Vocalist TaĆna passionately laments the decline of general intelligence and the rise of the “show me your papers” attitude that immigration officers have toward anyone who “looks illegal” (both songs are sung in Spanish, with English translations on the insert.)

Lust For Youth Growing Seeds LP
(Avant! Records)
This is the second proper full length for this group and it is again on Avant! (the excalmation point is part of their name, but sure, I'll be excited about it too!). The first record was more expiremtally noisily ambient. I liked it (still do). This one, however, is very much on the cold wave / darkwave / minimal wave kick. The second track in has a bass line lifted from New Order (a good thing and I approve unabashedly). There are no interludes or ambient spaces really. This LP just keeps you up and moving like a fuzzier Soft Cell.

Totimoshi Avenger CD
(At A Loss Recordings)
Having existed for 15 years, this California-based three-piece specializes in aggressive, circuitously-structured metal that sounds like a mix between 60s acid-rock and 80s/90s groove & sludge (Melvins comes to mind – they’ve not only toured with them, but had this record’s production and mastering work done by guys who’ve worked with them as well.) It feels like the album as a whole consists of numerous passages stitched together, strongly contributing to a thoughtful, varied sound that lends itself to multiple listens to take everything in. My favorite elements include the extra-heavy and strung-out acid-blues-rock of “Mainline” and the nuanced, early 90s-sounding grunge-tinged emotions of “Snag.” “Waning Divine” proves to be an epic-sounding closer: with the help of Mastodon’s Brent Hinds and Neurosis’ Scott Kelly, the song builds from hypnotic psychedelic sounds to climax at a truly wild guitar solo.
