The Drift Blue Hour CD/LP

(Temporary Residence Ltd.) (Buy Online From RSR)
On their third widely available full-length, this San Franciscan instrumental post-rock band explores nearly an hour of fascinating emotive atmospheres. This record comes after the loss of bandmate Jeff Jacobs to cancer – he was responsible for horns and electronics, but the others chose not to replace him. Understandably, a somber ambience can be detected throughout: it’s comparable to watching the morning sun faintly glowing through a layer of fog. There’s nothing too complex or technical here. Rather, from the ambitious, moody opener “Dark Passage” to the gorgeous, refreshing closer “Fountain,” there are plenty of repeated, contemplative textures with traditional rock instrumentation. One of the biggest standouts is the beautifully played “Luminous Friend,” with rich guitars and a shimmering keyboard creating a very hypnotic, easy-to-get-lost-in sound.

Beverly Fre$h Bed LP
 (SuperiorBelly) (Buy Online From RSR)
An emcee, artist, and holder of several Guinness World Records including breaking the most eggs on his head, is there anything Beverly Fre$h can’t do? (Besides act normal.) Beverly Fre$h doesn’t live in the world of the ordinary. His album reflects his bizarre behavior by blending hardcore rap, raw humor, strange screams, and a cappella chants. BED is the debut album by Detroit based Beverly Fre$h. Taking hip-hop back to its roots, yet being completely unique, Beverly Fre$h proves that he has a place in the rap game. Songs about heavy drug use, sex, violence, and insanity, BED is very entertaining to say the least. Songs ‘Dead Millionaire’, ‘Animal Skin’, and ‘Half a Haircut’ are especially worth checking out. This album is a vinyl only release, one in the series from sUPERIORbelly Record’s artists. If you’re looking for a fresh sound within the world of hip-hop, pick up the talented Beverly Fre$h’s album.

Legowelt The Teac Life Free Download/4LP

(Legowelt001) (Buy Online From RSR)
Last year Legowelt let this album out for free. It was honestly one of the best releases of last year, but it couldn't make it on my list because of my rule about having to actually be a physical release. Well, now it does have a physical release and it's a full 4 LP release and there is nothing deluxe about the packaging - it's real nice and minimal (4 LPs in a sleeve with a picture glued on it). It's not cheap (about 60 bux - imported and all), but I swear it's worth it. Hell, you probably already knew if you wanted this or not (and if you don't know yet you can go download the whole thing and then decide). If you're new to Legowelt he's a dude who makes elektro muzik (house, techno, etc.) and you should probably check out "Reports From The Backseat Pimp" before you go any further. That one is my island jam (if I could pick one album for the rest of my life...).

23rd of March 2012 Update of New and Key Restocked Items
at Redscroll Records

Quickly, before I get into the stock list for the week I'd like to draw your attention to a couple things.

1. Follow us on our YouTube Channel so you can see videos like this one with our own Al D.:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TIXGlTUGKY
http://www.youtube.com/user/redscrollrecords

2. Follow us on Tumblr where we're going to be posting the more fun side of things (we aren't going to just cross post - there will be no stock updates there, for instance). Each part of the internet for each purpose is what I always say (that's actually the first time I've ever formed that sentence).

Citizens Arrest Soaked In Others Blood 7"
(Painkiller / Coextinction)
Painkiller is always churning out the hardcore bangers. This time, they've brought us a physical release of last year's 4-song digital only, "Soaked In Others Blood" by Citizens Arrest. These are the first new songs by this band in 21 years. Surprisingly, these songs hold up really well next to the band's earlier songs; more along the lines of  the short and sweet "Death Threat" then the epic, "Burst Of Silence". For those unfamiliar, CA was a hardcore band from New York in the late eighties & early nineties (ABC NO RIO scene). Raw, fast hardcore punk with fun circle pit parts and a deep Cookie Monster vocal delivery. FFO: Negative FX, Dropdead, & Youth Of Today. Features Ted Leo on guitar and the vocalist from Disma.

Estrogen Highs Irrelevant Future LP
(Trouble In Mind)
It's hard to objectively review any band you already know you like. I'm not going to be objective here. This is my favorite record by E. Highs at the moment because it is the latest one. The supplemental/transitional instrumentation (Kryssi/Colorguard) is particularly great and interesting in "The World Is Flat" probably because it's something different to me than the past records. Rock and roll. You like the good old standards like Wire and The Wipers and other bands that don't start with a "W" then you should finally give these dudes a chance. If you have and you don't love them already then give this one a listen. Bam. Not objective.

Ivy League 2009-2011 CD
(6131 Records)
This release compiles several 7-inches from this Midland, Texas-based melodic hardcore band. It’s no surprise that their high-energy, emotion-soaked songs (in the same vein as a band like Title Fight) are popular with both hardcore and pop-punk kids. Even though I’m not typically drawn to music leaning toward “emo,” I’m impressed by how good they sound. The lead vocalist’s mournful crooning sounds sincere when touching on themes of self-deprecation due to life’s struggles, particularly relationships gone wrong. The music serves as a fast-paced and catchy means of coping with the downtrodden lyrics. The last three tracks are acoustic: they provide the most down-to-earth, intimate emotional expressions.
[Reviewer: Mark]
[Note: We have one Ivy League 7" in stock currently. This CD will be coming. Keep an eye on the updates.]

Monarch! Omens CD
(At A Loss Recordings)
Originally formed in France, this band consists of prophets of doom (metal) who drag the listener across an ominous landscape of sludge-drone. This is Monarch!’s sixth full-length since the first one in 2005. It’s easy to compare their harsh, slow sound to something like Sunn O))), but I felt it was more along the lines of Khanate or Moss (the latter band did a split single with them in 2007.) “Blood Seeress” sets the mood with acrid, ultra-drawn-out electric strings, punctuated drums and tortured screams synonymous with doom, eventually fading into an eerie dirge that sounds like a choir of long-gone souls. It flows right into the shortest track “Transylvanian Incantations,” which is wrapped in an unsettling, luminous layer of dark electronic ambience, along with some brief moments of a ghostly, distant voice that makes this track even more haunting than the previous one. The album concludes with the 19-minute “Black Becomes the Sun” – it starts out harsh, but soon sounds hopeful with an angelic voice radiating the scorched landscape. Before long, though, the pitch-black clouds return, complete with ethereal, otherworldly shrieks soaring above.
[Reviewer: Mark]

Ed Schrader’s Music Beat Jazz Mind CD/LP
(Load Records.)
Jazz Mind is the new EP from Ed Schrader and Devlin Rice. With war-like chants, minimalist beats and heavy bass lines, Jazz Mind is positively tough. Ed Schrader beats away at a floor tom whilst his vocals echo through empty spaces accompanied by dark bass. There is an aggressive and sometimes grave overtone, but much of the lyrical content is filled with dark humor. Songs that are especially good are ‘Sermon’, ‘Right’, ‘Rats’, and ‘Airshow’. Jazz Mind is definitely worth picking up.

Live Music: cUTpARTY cIRCUIT Monday March 26 6PM

Live Music: cUTpARTY cIRCUIT Monday March 26 6PM

The secret location will be in full use Monday night as it hosts some deviant electronic acts.

The cUTpARTY cIRCUIT is a traveling group of acts (East Coast). You might call it a tour. It will be in CT this coming Monday. If you've never been aurally assaulted in a pleasurable way it's not too late to change that. In fact, Monday is the optimal time. Come by at 6PM and be in bed in time for a full night's sleep. Bring ear plugs. Bring your dancing shoes. Do not bring alcohol as there is no liquor license and it is a legit business hosting this.

Casiokids Aabenbaringen Over Aaskammen CD/LP
(Polyvinyl Record Co.)
Here’s some catchy synthpop from Norway. This record (which translates as “the revelation over the mountain”) is the quartet’s second U.S. release. It doesn’t require any knowledge of the Norwegian vocals to enjoy the invigorating harmonies, particularly the impressively tight sounds produced with their namesake keyboard. The percussion-free instrumental title track is an interesting choice of introduction, sounding like a perfect theme for a mournful film artistically portraying a European town’s skyline. The danceable, head-bobbing elements kick in when it transitions into “Det Haster!,” creating the impression of transforming an old-world style into a modern one. This style sets the foundation for the record’s high points, including the sunny, summer-ready “Golden Years” and the thick, pulsing and cooled-down instrumental “Kaskaden.” The intensely melodic “Selskapets Triste Avslutning” had some additional creative support from several of Montreal members who were visiting Bergen during the album’s final recording stages.

Trust TRST CD/LP

(Arts & Crafts)
After hearing a 7" and a 12" on Sacred Bones (especially the 12") I was sold on this band. Dark dance music that would have fit in at the Bat Cave (London or NYC/Albion). I got the opportunity to see them open for Balam Acab late last year too. My hopes were confirmed manifold. This LP further demonstrates their creepy sexual greatness.

AU Both Lights LP/CD

(Hometapes)
Luke Wyland and Dana Valatka make up the duo from Portland, Oregon known as AU. Long since there last LP in 2008, "Verbs," AU returns with their third album, Both Lights. Experimenting with sounds, Both Lights has something for every listener, genre blending at its finest, from folk to jazz and pop to rock n’ roll. With energetic Wyland on keys and guitar and Valatka playing unique percussion, Both Lights is incredibly exciting with a new twist at every track. Appearances from saxophonist Colin Stetson (Bon Iver and Arcade Fire), and vocalist Holland Andrews, amongst many others add to the wide range of influences found on this album. Songs you will be playing over and over again include ‘Epic’ , ‘OJ’, their first single ‘Solid Gold’, ‘Why I Must’ and ‘Don’t Lie Down’. Forty minutes and eleven tracks later, AU will have you in a delightfully happy mood! Definitely pick up a copy of Both Lights when it comes out on April 3rd.

The Saddest Landscape After The Lights LP/CD

(Topshelf Records)
"After The Lights" is the newest album from screamo pioneers The Saddest Landscape. After being a band for over a decade it's safe to say these guys know how to keep this genre refreshing and exciting, and this new album is no exception. It consists of seven emotionally raw tracks that are as aggressive as they are depressed. Andy Maddox vocalizes the lyrics with an almost uncertain tone to his voice, making them frail at times, but extremely powerful and heartfelt. The guitars and drums really drive these feelings to the listener, demanding your attention. This is a serious ear grabber, and raises the bar for this new wave of screamo bands. Also, any band that opens up their live set with the intro of "Burning Fight" by Inside Out automatically gets a gold sticker in my mind.
[Reviewer: Sean]
[P.S. They're playing The Space on March 18th and perhaps next month somewhere very close perhaps on Record Store Day perhaps.]

Total Fucking Destruction Hater CD

(Translation Loss / Waylon Recordings)
This aptly named side project of Brutal Truth drummer Richard Hoak delivers 27 tracks of absolutely pummeling, exhausting grindcore in 27 minutes. The trio has an excellent handle on the chaos, musically sounding more like an out-of-control shredding machine than an organic group of humans. Thankfully, there’s plenty of variation thrown in as well, with tracks like “Everything You Need But Nothing You Want” and “Dudehammer” temporarily drifting into some genuinely melodic metal grooves. At 3 minutes and 10 seconds, the longest track “I Not Pose” stands out by incorporating slowed-down screams, lengthy guitar feedback and a spaced-out, almost tribal-sounding drum pattern. Another one of TFD’s strengths is their imagination, with head-spinning lyrics straight of a dystopian fantasy (“unlearning the unknown / crypto techno battle plans / war for the future / fought in never-never land.”) There’s also some intriguing commentary on their scene in general (“grind for the money / grind for the girls / grind for a voice / to shout against a silent world.”)

Various Artists IOTDXI 3LP+2CD

(R&S Records)
All right so here is another compilation of forward thinking electronic music from a label of such thought. Similar to the Hessle Audio compilation of last year in it's bulk and and also in its quality. In fact, it includes one or three of the same artists. I appreciate that it includes exclusive tracks from all of the artists. The artists are Pariah, Space Dimension Controller, Airhead, Untold, Bullion, Blawan, The Chain, Klaus and Lone (one of the Pariah tracks is a Oneohtrix Point Never remix too, btw). Solid lineup contained in this one. This fits well as a soundtrack for filing while dancing or sitting and typing while dancing (never stop dancing or at least bobbing your head).

Bowerbirds The Clearing  CD/LP

(Dead Oceans)
The third album by Bowerbirds almost didn’t happen. The duo, Phil Moore and Beth Tacular broke up for about a year putting the band behind them; during this time Beth was faced with a life threatening illness. The Clearing, is a reconnection of love between the couple and a testament of their incredible chemistry as a band. The result is a beautifully constructed and perfectly produced album, with gentle yet catchy melodies and unique instrumentation. Songs about love, life, and nature fill the album from front to finish. Eleven tracks and 46 minutes later you will find yourself playing this album over again, and again. Each listen makes The Clearing more wonderful than the last. Although every track is amazing, songs like ‘Tuck the Darkness In’, ‘In the Yard’, ‘This Year’ and ‘Sweet Moment’ make this album impossible to put down. The Clearing, by Bowerbirds comes out March 6th.

Main Attrakionz 808s & Dark Grapes II LP
(Type Recordings)
This is the second properly hip-hop release from Type (first being Clams Casino). It is the first that relies heavily on actual rapping (Clams = beats). I wouldn't say it relies extraordinarily heavily on the verses as the beats are pretty exceptional by some pretty exciting names in the upcoming hip-hop producing realm (Squadda B, Friendzone, Silky Johnson, NoaBoa, and Clams Casino himself and a bunch more actually). This also includes a lot of stuff that encompasses my new favorite music phrase: chillbient. Get chill and rock.

Sleigh Bells Reign of Terror CD/LP

(Mom + Pop)
I was a little skeptical at first: after all, Sleigh Bells’ 2010 record Treats seemed pretty one-of-a-kind with its abrasive-and-sweet mix of breathy vocals, distorted guitar, and megaton beats that truly put speakers to the test. Here, they haven’t strayed too far from their signature brand of bulked-up noise pop: the vocals remain hypnotic, the guitar still burns, and the beats pack the same physical punch. However, they’ve adopted a greater focus on melody, so while the blasting from the last album is still clearly present and accounted for, there’s nothing as bracingly extreme as the exploding “Crown on the Ground” or clobbering “Straight A’s.” On Reign of Terror, standout tracks like “Born To Lose” and “Comeback Kid” rely on intense yet head-bobbingly infectious rhythm (complete with pep-talk vocals) that help convey the exhilaration of being at a sporting event where everyone can feel the speakers’ bass. The duo captures said feeling the best on the chant-laden “Crush,” complete a beat that was created by friends stomping on bleachers in a gymnasium.  Toward the end, the guitar riffs on tracks like the hot-on-the-ears “Demons” incorporate a classic metal sound (a personal favorite of mine, “Never Say Die,” creatively mixes a simple, endlessly looping riff with a gorgeous, glassy-sounding 3-note descent to construct a very intoxicating sound.) I’m happy that Sleigh Bells managed to prove that they’re not a one-album curiosity. They’ve got an excellent grip on their sound, and they managed to keep it interesting without sounding stale, while also innovating without changing their sound too much.
