Battles Gloss Drop CD/LP

(Warp Records)

Not many albums can be considered both experimental and accessible, but Gloss
Drop
deserves that distinction. It may be tough to imagine that Battles would
maintain their unique sound after guitarist/vocalist Tyondai Braxton’s 2010
departure, but this album shows that the remaining members have successfully
carved out their niche. Describing the music is a true challenge, but I think it
instantly connected with me because it reminds me of video game music; catchy
melodies that remain infectious after extended periods of listening, backed with
instrumentation that freely thrives outside conventional “pop” songwriting. All
three members have truly intense, complex musical talent, and the four tracks
with guest vocals are very unique. Standouts include the uninhibited, irresistible
and sweetly speckled “Ice Cream” (featuring Chilean artist Matias Aguayo) and the
invigoratingly epic “My Machines” (Gary Numan.)

Matthew Cooper Some Days Are Better Than Others LP
(Temporary Resistance Ltd.)

Better known by his stage name Eluvium, Cooper has composed a rich, iridescent
ambient score for the titular film by fellow Portlander Matt McCormick. The subject
matter of Some Days Are Better Than Others is “strangers whose lives occasionally
intersect as they navigate their way through the struggles of personal attachment
and disconnection,” according to the label’s site. As Cooper watched the film, he
was inspired by the theme of our “out with the old, in with the new” society, so he
chose to use damaged instruments as a means of demonstrating their abandoned
potential. The resulting music does not sound “broken” at all, but rather beautiful
and meaningful. Since his specialty is crafting an ambient atmosphere, he uses
several electronic instruments. An organ/synthesizer particularly stands out, along
with strings in several tracks. Listening to this score is like a spending a day for an
introspective analysis of one’s own life - a sobering method of finding solace.

Wolves Simulation. Transparency. Alienation 10"
(Coalition Records)

We've had copies of this featured at the front of the store for a while, but people seem to not notice.  That sucks 'cause it's good! Wolves was oneo fthe bands to crawl out of Orchid's rotting corpse.  These dudes play the jazzy version of screamo peppered with audio clips over feedback to get you rev'd up. PLAY IT LOUD! Comes with a download. FFO: Off Minor, Neil Perry, Forstella Ford

East Coast Empire Records

East Coast Empire Records

A few weeks ago someone traded in a test press version of the "The Division Has Begun" compilation on East Coast Empire Records. This is an amazing piece of Connecticut's hardcore history featuring five of the most important bands from the late 90's; 100 Demons, Death Threat, Fear Tomorrow, Mans Ruin, & Divided By Hate. ECER was also the best hardcore label in CT hands down. The test pressing info was unknown so I contacted Dave Duncan, owner of ECER. He said that there are 20 rejected & 20 accepted tests. It turns out, he still had some ECER stock in storage as well. Which I happily bought off him!

Here's the haul:

Divided By Hate - "Sediments Of Shame" - 7" (clear) x5
Divided By Hate - "Sediments Of Shame" - 7" (yellow) x4
Reach The Sky - "Open Roads And Broken Dreams" - 7" (green) x5
Reach The Sky - "Open Roads And Broken Dreams" (white, 1st press) x5
V/A - "The Division Has Begun" compilation - 7" x4
Follow Through - "Taking It Back" - LP (white) x11
Follow Through - "Taking It Back - LP (blue) x3

These copies of the compilation came without covers, so I was given permission to make a DIY photocopy cover. Please note that I used the most 90's hardcore font my computer had to offer.

Dave Duncan is also the owner of 5th Dimension Skate & Snow in Prospect, CT. A business that has been open since 1995. When I was younger (12-14 years old), he also sold hardcore out of it, since he was also running ECER at the time. This was one of my earliest influences showing and proving that you could own your own business, be your own boss, and have it be something that you love and feel passionate about. Without this exposure, who knows? There might not have been a Redscroll Records.

Two ECER-related stories real quick:

When I was 13 I booked some NYHC bands (who I won't name) and the show bombed big time. I was only in charge of the venue, John Zumbo (R.I.P.) was in charge of the bands, but somehow I got stuck with the debt at the end of the night They demanded hundreds of dollars I didn't have and wasn't going to get anytime soon. I was getting pretty regular phone calls and internet harassment. Dave Duncan & Craig Mack (Follow Through / Fear Tomorrow / Living Hell) told me to let those NY dudes know that they took the money and that if they wanted it, they had to take it from them. I never got another message or threatening phone call again. CONNECTICUT BROTHERHOOD!

At a Sum Of All Fears show at the Hanover House in Meriden, CT I got kicked in the mouth by Dave Duncan and my bottom front teeth got knocked loose and pushed backward. I spit blood for the rest of the night and ended up having to throw out my blood & spit covered t-shirt at a Dominos Pizza so my parents wouldn't see it. I didn't end up losing the teeth, they're just way more crooked. CONNECTICUT HARDCORE!

Spotlight: Estrogen Highs

Spotlight: Estrogen Highs

[Newer band picture, but Stefan has in fact cut his hair since this.]

Estrogen Highs is a rock and roll band from New Haven, CT.  Garage Rock.  Started by Stefan Christensen and now a full fledged band, Estrogen Highs has become a staple and anchor (possibly some other objects too - all meant in the most flattering way) in the Connecticut do-it-yourself punk community.  We interviewed Stefan about all his current workings (minus his gig as the live guitarist for Medication - another band you should get familiar with; oh yea, Medication are playing Thursday at Popeye's with Iceage).

[Stefan in some Polaroid style picture that seems to get used a lot.]

Interview with Johann Stefan Gall Christensen
(aka Stefan Christ):

Estrogen Highs started in your bedroom and got off to a rather languid start and now you've put out an LP, a 12" EP and a 7" within a matter of months.  Explain how you've gotten up to so much speed.

I always had a lot of songs, it just took a long time to get it all together. The first few 7"s, LP, and cassette releases were recorded with a full band or by myself, playing every instrument. Either way it was pretty time consuming to get it all done. For the 2nd LP, 12", and new 7" we moved into a different recording style where we were piecing tracks together a bit at a time. This allowed us to record a whole lot of material in a relatively short period of time. Currently we are working on a new LP for Trouble in Mind Records from Chicago. This record is going to be a little different. Maybe a bit more Post Punk-ish.  Were also touring in mid August - doing 12 or 13 days out through Minneapolis and back.

[Older Band Picture]

You've also been doing a fair amount of playing out and touring.  Any fun stories?

Yes, we drove from Seattle to Minneapolis with only one day off in between. We also did this in January, so we ended up spending 37 straight hours in the van, excluding gas and food breaks. We went through mountain passes and white out blizzards. We got stuck in a parking lot in Idaho and the locals just laughed at us for about 10 or 15 minutes, until finally one of them hauled us out of there. By the time we got to Minneapolis we were completely drained and played a terrible set.

[GRAM001 - Estrogen Highs LP]

Outside of the band you've recently started up a label (Gramery Records) that you released the latest E. Highs LP on; any news on that front? Upcoming releases?

I'm pressing a band called Protomartyr to get me some recordings. They are an amazing band. Estrogen Highs have been lucky enough to play with them twice in Detroit and both times they were amazing. Unfortunately they are almost completely unknown outside of Michigan. I've heard practice recordings and they're top notch. The midwest's answer to The Fall - 30 years later. Hopefully I can get some recordings from them soon. Other than that we're working on a few noise cassette releases. We have Chemical Fruits recordings, which is 2/3s of Tiger Hatchery and hopefully we will get recordings from Dan Duglieski soon. He is in Body Morph, Uneven Universe, Cardboard Sax, and various other projects.

Beyond the band and label you also got Popeye's Garage up and running last year with a small group of friends.  You now run it with a more streamlined group.  How'd this all come about?  How are things going now and anything of the future to report?

Popeye's is now just run by me and Kryssi. It came about last spring when we decided that New Haven needed a DIY show spot, specifically for doing strange music that just doesn't work in a bar. We found the space through our friend. The owner of our building has employed a number of our friends, so we spoke to him and arranged the rental of part of it for doing shows. We "closed" last year when Yale was buying the building but the day the deal was supposed to close they backed out - not sure why. We were closed for most of the winter anyway because there is no heat in the building. Now we are back up and running. We've been doing 1 or 2 shows a week this year. It's been a bit slower but we're hoping things will start to pick back up soon.

Ema Past Life Martyred Saints LP
(Souterrain Transmissions)

EMA is Erika M. Anderson. Formerly of Gowns, she now has her own project.  You can read up on her in depth over at her artist profile on Altered Zones.  There are a couple musical clips and a short interview there as well.  Noisey pop/poppy noise songs lie/lay within this one.  Haunted lo-fi echoing folk songs.  You like the grimier side of PJ Harvey?  Here you are.  I do too.
[Reviewer: Rick]

Foundation When the Smoke Clears LP
(Bridge 9)

Foundation's "When the Smoke Clears" is the latest addition to the
Bridge 9 catalog, and stands to be the label's heaviest release in
years. While most other releases on this label lately are more
melodic, or even poppy (IE: Lemuria) Foundation adds something I
haven't seen on this label in a while, and that's pissed off, moshy,
straight edge hardcore. The lyrics are riddled with notes of internal
struggle and some referring to the current state of hardcore ("What
happened to the code of honor that we used to entrust? Ideas carved in
stone have now turned to dust.")
This comes in a nice gatefold jacket with a variety of tour photos. It
also has a huge "Thank You" list, which I find less and less with
hardcore releases lately. Bring 'em back!

Fastbreak Fast Cars, Fast Women

(Big Wheel Recreation)

When this album came out in 1998, I didn't like it at all. In the late
90s, I was much more interested in the heavier pissed off CTHC bands
(Hatebreed, Fear Tomorrow, Mans Ruin, Death Threat etc..) and even
less interested in any CT bands defecting to Boston. I was also just
way too angry to be into a youth crew band that shared borders with
pop punk.

Fastbreak for those that don't know was a Connecticut youth-crew
styled hardcore band. Formed by members of Cornerstone in 1994. These
dudes put out some 7"s, then went on to put out full length releases
on Revelation & Big Wheel. Members were also in In My Eyes, Right
Brigade, & Piebald. Recently we bought a collection of used hardcore
LPs and there were a couple copies of "Fast Cars, Fast Women" in the
mix. I decided to give this another whirl and the verdict is, 26 year
old me thinks this is a solid record.

(check out baby Wes Nelson [Schematic of a Waking Life, Estrogen Highs, other bands] on stage)

Kode9 & The Spaceape Black Sun
(Hyperdub)

Kode9 is Steve Goodman.  Steve Goodman lectures in Music Culture at the School of Sciences, Media, and Cultural Studies at the University of East London and is the founder of the record label Hyperdub.  All this information can be verified at his website www.sonicwarfare.org - not so coincidentally he's also penned a book with the name Sonic Warfare (by his credentials you might suspect that this is not a light read - you'd be right. It is dense with information [read: textbok]).  Kode9 knows how to make bass music.  Add his friend the Spaceape to the mix for some dynamism and you get a very nice future dub record.  At times more dub and at times more bass (nevermind if that doesn't seem to make sense, just take it like it reads).  These aren't really dancefloor bangers.  These tracks are headnodders.  Of course, I can go for a good headnodder from time to time on the dancefloor - these tracks just aren't what you'd call "Killer Kuts."  Bonus time: It's a double LP with a gatefold done well/right with lyrics and a short comic on the inner sides.  Keep bouncin'.

Movie: Blank City (Win Free Passes)

Movie: Blank City (Win Free Passes)
All right, so there is this movie playing at Real Art Ways in Hartford starting tomorrow (Friday, June 10, 2011).  It looks cool.  I have only seen the trailer so far.  I'll definitely watch it. Perhaps I'll see you in Hartford.  Perhaps you'll get one of these pairs of passes I have to give away.  The passes are good for the entire run - so you don't need to go to a particular showing of it. To get a pair of free passes email redscroll@gmail.com with the subject "Blank City Passes" and answer this simple question: What band was this Mr. Thurston Moore involved with at the tail end of the initial No Wave movement?  Super easy really. The first couple people to email the right answer (I mean, c'mon, really easy) will get these.
[Some press material for the film follows - check it out y'all.]

Blank City A film by Céline Danhier
USA • 2010 • 94 MINS. • INSURGENT MEDIA

BLANK CITY tells the long-overdue tale of the motley crew of renegade filmmakers that emerged from an economically bankrupt and dangerous period of New York history that crossed over with the East Village Art Scene and thriving music scene. It’s a fascinating look at the way this misfit cinema used the deserted, bombed-out Lower East Side landscapes to craft daring works that would go on to profoundly influence Independent Film today. Unlike the much-celebrated punk music scene, this era’s thrilling and confrontational underground film movement has never before been chronicled. Directed by French newcomer Celine Danhier, BLANK CITY captures the idiosyncratic, explosive energy of the “No Wave Cinema” and “Cinema of Transgression” movements. Featured players include acclaimed directors Jim Jarmusch and John Waters, actor-writer-director Steve Buscemi, Blondie’s Debbie Harry, Hip Hop legend Fab 5 Freddy, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, artist James Nares, photographer Richard Kern as well as Amos Poe, Eric Mitchell, Susan Seidelman, Beth B, Scott B, Charlie Ahearn and Nick Zedd. Fittingly, the soundtrack includes: Patti Smith, Television, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, The Contortions, The Bush Tetras, Sonic Youth and many more.

Spotlight: Snake Oil

Spotlight: Snake Oil
[Self-Released]

Snake Oil is a mysterious outfit consisting of ten members from the north eastern region of America (NY/CT/MA).  At least some of these people have done time in Connecticut bands Titles & The Weigh Down. Instrumental psychedelic-pop. Breezy guitars. A little funk.  At times it gets to feeling like some jazzy improv, but I can definitely see how it could be reproduced live.  They then can reel it in rather quickly.  Railroad driving drum beats with walking bass lines and floating guitar parts and occasional improvisations.  Is this the same Snake Oil that did a track on the 3xCD "Gold Leaf Branches" compilation (which included folks I would easily call contemporaries like Charalambides, Marissa Nadler, Six Organs of Admittance...) back in 2005 on Digitalis?  The mystery may never be solved.

"I Was A Total Pyro" is the soundtrack to walking down deserted streets in the industrial part of town on a hot summer day, wearing corduroys & kicking every piece of scrap metal that crosses your path. The mellow pacing and electronics used on,"Jung Greezy" transport me to a space ship where I've woken up and realized I was an alien, but everything is going to be okay cause I'm not alone. These sondgs are great because they make you feel warm and fuzzy.  Do you remember loving the music on the Muppet Babies?  I do.  What if Neil Young did the soundtrack and they were often in space (or y' know, pretending really vividly)?

The record was released today officially. Its mysteriousness is built upon by the minimalist packaging with a night and day front and back cover with just the band name in the bottom corner and on the side of the sleeve (really, that's it, nothing else).  Inside you'll find a download code (which will be helpful for identifying song titles).  There is also a sticker with a scanner code (for use on your portable communication smart device - we live in the future).

Snake Oil is playing (woah, will they wear masks?) a release show for this record with Atrina and DJ Shaki on June 17th at Cafe 9.  ||Facebook Event Page||

Reviews: Johann Johannsson & Esmerine
(NEW REVIEWER!)
(Both of these albums arrived today, by the by.)

Hey all, we have a new reviewer on board.  Let's welcome him.  In the future his reviews may show up with the update with the reviews the few of us already do (Josh, Rick & Sean). Mark is an aspiring writer who enjoys creative writing and independent music.  He has a blog of his own you can check out here.  Thanks Mark and welcome.  We look forward to more of these well thought out reviews.

Jóhann Jóhannsson The Miners’ Hymns
[Fat Cat Records]

A truly successful film score does not merely complement a film’s visuals; it also
radiates with an aura of the film, managing to stand independently in its own
right. Iceland-born composer Jóhann Jóhannsson’ s score for The Miners’ Hymns
fits this description well. The film in question, according to the description on Fat
Cat Records’ website, focuses on an “ill-fated mining community in North East
England” and the Miners’ Gala that celebrates their lives. Despite the fact that
I have not yet watched the film, I seriously want to check it out now, thanks to
the poignant atmosphere painted by the predominantly brass and organ-based
ensemble. I’m amazed by how heartrending and sentimental a film score about a
coal mining community can be. Each piece’s title was carefully selected from actual
slogans printed on trade union banners, providing very fascinating descriptions.
A somber mood blankets the overall experience, from the emotional ten-and-a-
half minute opener “They Being Dead yet Speaketh” to the triumphant, swelling
conclusion of “The Cause of Labour is the Hope of the World.” A particular standout
to me was “An Injury To One Is The Concern of All,” which explores a particularly
ominous, treacherous wasteland of orchestral spikes that soar like walls of fire
in a suffocating, dense landscape. Jóhannsson adds his share of subtle electronics to
complete the mood, giving an almost otherworldly essence to set it apart from most film
scores.

Esmerine La Lechuza
 [Constellation Records]
Imagine river rafting across an unfamiliar land, absorbing the beauty of both natural
and man-made sights without another care in your mind. Using only instruments
such as cello, harp, percussion and occasional vocals, the four-piece Esmerine make
La Lechuza an emotional, ornate experience. The river comparison is especially
well justified with mellow-yet-compelling songs such as “A Dog River” and “Little
Streams Make Big Rivers.” Personally, I’m feeling a strong, rich East Asian vibe from
the lively percussion and flowing strings, despite this band’s Montreal origin (its
members have contributed to several fellow local acts, such as Godspeed You! Black
Emperor (percussionist Bruce Cawdron) and Thee Silver Mt. Zion (cellist Beckie
Foon.)) The closer “Fish On Land” is particularly engrossing, as it was written and
sung by the late Lhasa de Sela, recorded with Cawdron and Foon in 2009, the year
before she lost her battle with cancer.

Deafheaven Roads To Judah LP/CD
(Deathwish Music)

Hailing from San Fransisco, Deafheaven is a five piece genre-bending band. They've got elements of shoegaze, black metal, & hardcore (read: screamo). It's no shocker that the band sites My Bloody Valentine, Burzum, & Orchid as influences. It's also no surprise that these guys are on Deathwish; one of my favorite labels. While Deathwish does have a stacked roster of legendary bands, they also have plenty of new acts that push the limits of what can be shoved under the massive umbrella terms of, "hardcore" or "punk". Deafheaven fits in beautifully. They're also playing CT in a couple weeks: FB Event Page. (FFO: Wolves In The Throne Room, Liturgy, Envy)
[Reviewer: Josh]

Hooded Menace / Ilsa LP
 (Contagion Records)

I'm not even going to pretend like this is a review.  This is just a recommendation.  Death doom gutter music.  Ilsa is a little more doom than punk (like Coffins, but with less d-beat).  Hooded Menace is just evil gutteral death metal drawn out and slowly beating on your body (from the ear holes first, duh).  It's limited to 500 copies so just get it while you can.  We have a couple.  It seems we haven't had enough metal - even after a full weekend of it in Baltimore at Maryland Death Fest (both Josh and I and a few friends attended).
