Clusterfuck / Cojoba (Split) 7"

(Computer Crime Records)
This seven-inch EP unites a double-dose of unique hardcore punk flavors from two bands typically separated by over 1,600 miles of the Atlantic Ocean. Formed in Bridgeport in late 2003, Clusterfuck represents CT by delivering three fast-tempo songs with plenty of sarcasm and fun. The subversive lyrics focus on mocking crappy image-driven radio rock and suggesting that all humans should be killed to make “Bone Mulch” for growing flowers. On the other side, Puerto Rico’s female-fronted Cojoba (which I first heard years ago on a Cry Now, Cry Later compilation) takes a more serious approach with their two lengthier songs. Vocalist Taína passionately laments the decline of general intelligence and the rise of the “show me your papers” attitude that immigration officers have toward anyone who “looks illegal” (both songs are sung in Spanish, with English translations on the insert.)
[Reviewer: Mark]

Lust For Youth Growing Seeds LP
(Avant! Records)
This is the second proper full length for this group and it is again on Avant! (the excalmation point is part of their name, but sure, I'll be excited about it too!).  The first record was more expiremtally noisily ambient. I liked it (still do). This one, however, is very much on the cold wave / darkwave / minimal wave kick. The second track in has a bass line lifted from New Order (a good thing and I approve unabashedly).  There are no interludes or ambient spaces really. This LP just keeps you up and moving like a fuzzier Soft Cell.
[Reviewer: Rick]

Totimoshi Avenger CD

(At A Loss Recordings)
Having existed for 15 years, this California-based three-piece specializes in aggressive, circuitously-structured metal that sounds like a mix between 60s acid-rock and 80s/90s groove & sludge (Melvins comes to mind – they’ve not only toured with them, but had this record’s production and mastering work done by guys who’ve worked with them as well.) It feels like the album as a whole consists of numerous passages stitched together, strongly contributing to a thoughtful, varied sound that lends itself to multiple listens to take everything in. My favorite elements include the extra-heavy and strung-out acid-blues-rock of “Mainline” and the nuanced, early 90s-sounding grunge-tinged emotions of “Snag.” “Waning Divine” proves to be an epic-sounding closer: with the help of Mastodon’s Brent Hinds and Neurosis’ Scott Kelly, the song builds from hypnotic psychedelic sounds to climax at a truly wild guitar solo.

Turntables For Sale

Turntables For Sale
We have a variety of turntables for sale in the store. We thought it might be a good idea to give an overview of what we currently have available. There are a couple new models and a few used models (all checked to make sure they are in fine working order).

For starters, we have a nice affordable model made by Audio Technica - the AT-LP60 model.  It's $99.95 and has replaceable parts (good for the long haul). You can hook this up to a line or phono toggle so you can hook it up to your stereo system (components with pre-amp) or you can plug it right into your computer (or other line device).

If you're looking for some audiophile grade equipment then we have the Rega RP1 for sale at a price lower than you'll find on the internet anywhere (I am actually not allowed to say while on the internet here). It's the turntable we have set up at the front of the store.

For this turntable there is minimal parts (to keep mechanical noise to a minimum). There is only a phono output so you are going to need a pre-amp. Honestly, if you are looking to get into this turntable you are probably going to want to look into high quality stereo equipment from top to bottom (speakers, components, etc.).

For used turntables we have a few at the moment (we never have the same one twice!). The first one we want to tell you about is a Sony model that comes with speakers and a receiver. Basically with this you are all set to go. This is yours for $100.
You don't have to buy anything extra. The Turntable is the PS-LX2 Turntable. The receiver is the STR-VX4 Receiver and the speakers are mounted on stilts.

Finally, we have two vintage Beograms that have actually never been set up for use (still have the foam between components). They are both $175. The TX2 has the added benefit of having a speaker built right in (or you can gladly hook it up to your stereo).

The original boxes are here and the 8000 has all of its original instruction manuals too!

Jacaszek Glimmer
(Ghostly International)
Michal Jacaszek is a Polish musician who, for about a decade, has been composing works of the ambient/modern classical persuasion. His latest record provides a very somber, reflective experience that turns out to be an experimental, nonconformist approach to both genres. To conceive the curiously ornate, subterranean-sounding atmosphere, Jacaszek primarily relies on acoustic/orchestral strings and unpredictable electronic tweaks. For example, opener “Goldengrove” primarily consists of several different clean-sounding string instruments and a metallophone on a foundation of eerie, sensual scratch loops. “Evening Strains To Be Time’s Vast” provides the most intense onslaught of whirling noise toward the end, but for most part, the songwriting is both abstract and mellow throughout. It’s certainly a fascinating take on the ambient genre.
[Reviewer: Mark]

Pterodactyl Spills Out
(Brah Records/Jagjaguwar)
Based in Brooklyn, these guys draw from several eras for the acid-infused lo-fi psych-pop on their third record. “School Glue” kicks it off with a mix of trippy Animal Collective-reminiscent jovialness and sunny guitar noise, eventually transitioning into the blissfully surf-tinged “Searchers” (later track “The Break” is just one of several great demonstrations of the style, like Wavves experimenting with an artsier sound.) Other tracks, such as the dark, slightly spooky “The Hole Night” and slow-simmering, resonant “Zombies,” give the purest reflection of morose pop psychedelia from the 60s (it reminds me of The Beatles’ more experimental endeavors and, tying into the latter track’s title, The Zombies.) Another standout close to the style is “Allergy Shots,” which mournfully repeats the phrase “the grass isn’t greener” amidst a downtempo bass and nonstop tambourine rhythm.

Die Selektion Cladis

(Edition Gris)
This record starts with some ominous tones and a voice (in a language I do not understand) under a wall of static or possibly just rain; there is a thunder strike after the voice stops. The rain and thunder fade out as the side comes to an end. The B-Side again begins with some ominous tones and some distant rhythms. On this side that distant rhythm is a clue as to what Die Selektion really leaves you wanting more and more of - dark dance music. Some 4/4 beats and repetitious harmonic joy thrown in the mix (we all can't be dark all of the time - even within the dark times; especially on joyous days as this when Josh and Jenn are being married!). I'm looking forward to a lot more from this relatively new group out of Germany (a group that includes "a classic trumpet").

Extra Life Dream Seeds

(Northern Spy)
On their third full-length, this Brooklyn trio embarks on a truly ambitious journey of conceptual experimentation. Sounding like a mix of Renaissance, progressive, and math rock, the songs are theatrical and epic in scope. The primarily driving force is vocalist/synth player/acoustic guitarist Charlie Looker’s dramatic and poetic singing. From melancholy opener “No Dreams Tonight,” the running themes include God-fearing religiousness and childhood innocence, most strikingly in situations involving abuse (“Discipline For Edwin”) and death (“Ten Year Teardrop.”) It’s not easy to think of other albums to compare this to: the abstract lyrics, backed by music that ranges from chamber-reminiscent strings to thick, angular prog to creepy avant-garde minimalism, make for a very unique and surreal experience.

Rob Crow He Thinks He’s People

(Temporary Residence Ltd.)
Known as a singer and multi-instrumentalist in numerous bands (most notably Pinback,) Crow’s latest solo record will likely appeal to a wide audience. Properly describing it to those unfamiliar with his trademark style, though, requires some imagination (I have to admit that I haven’t heard much of his other material before this.) The title is a great indicator: his brand of electric/acoustic indie rock is self-deprecating and dark-humored, but delivered in a way that sounds comfortably organic and mellow instead of off-putting. His years of experience have paid off: he manages to sound both authentic and well-controlled about feelings of helpless on the slightly spooky “Tranked,” as well as not caring about “what any man says” about wearing “a dress for your services” on “So Way.” His sense of humor gets pretty blunt, particularly when he says he’d like to be there when annoying cellphone-users die and get put in body bags (“I’d Like To Be There.”) It’s refreshing that he isn’t afraid to say exactly what’s on his mind.

Mount Carmel Real Women
 (Siltbreeze)[Buy Online from RSR]
This Columbus, Ohio trio sounds like they’re straight out of a dusty, sweltering barroom in the late 60s or early 70s: that’s how pure their brand of blues-rock sounds, right down to the guitar tuning and analog distortion. On their second record, they further refine their sound with just the right amount of roughness thanks to the twang-heavy guitar, high-energy drumming and spirited vocals. They’d fit the bill excellently with bands like ZZ Top, Humble Pie and The Allman Brothers Band; more recently, The Black Crowes and The White Stripes come to mind. The lyrical laments sound very genuine, such as dealing with the difficulty of finding “Real Women,” as well as the desire to “Be Somebody” else.

Sigur Rós Valtari
 (Parlophone) [Buy Online from RSR]
Once again, Iceland’s best-known ambient/post-rock quartet serves up an absolutely gorgeous record that sounds like it was extracted straight from their dreams. Like bassist Georg Hólm said in an interview, the album really does sound more electronic-based than some previous work; the synth, strings, piano and added choral vocals all make it feel like swimming through an endless realm of hauntingly beautiful subconscious thoughts. I have to admit that I have a weakness for this style: I love getting lost in these arrangements. For example, the first single “Ekki múkk” sounds nostalgic to an otherworldly degree thanks to its nuanced orchestral strings, drawn-out deep piano and comfortably beautiful vocals from Jónsi Birgisson. All of these elements come together to paint atmospheres that will vary for everyone – I envision late-day sunlight in a massive autumnal forest when I hear “Varúð;” one of several tracks (including “Ekki múkk,” undoubtedly) that really makes an out-of-tune-sounding piano’s resonance sound unbelievably intimate. Another highlight for me is “Dauðalogn,” which sounds like a wonder-filled ode to shimmering galaxies that stretch on forever.
