Snow
So yea, it snowed a lot yesterday and part of today. We closed at 3 (instead of 6PM) yesterday. Today I had to open a whopping 5 minutes late (mostly because I was stuck behind a line of people behind a really nervous driver with their warning lights on for a couple miles - the slowest couple miles).
Yea, so anyway, we're open today until 6PM as per usual. To stay on top of things in the future regarding any closings due to weather do check up here, but also look out for our tweets here: http://www.twitter.com/redscroll

Happy Xmas Everyone Update
17th Of December 2010 Update of New and Key Restocked Items
at Redscroll Records
I might do another mini-update before Christmas, but maybe not. Since that is the case and since this is now the time for last minute ideas and such I'm including a list of possible ideas.
Quick Xmas Gift Ideas:
Books! We have the expanded second edition of American Hardcore in stock. We've got For the Love Of Vinyl: The Album Art of Hipgnosis, Touch & Go: The Complete Hardcore Punk Zine, Bossa Nova... the Rise Of Brazilian Music In The 1960s, Kanaval: ...The Streets Of Haiti and a bunch of other really great music related books.
If you have a record lover then perhaps they would appreciate one of our vinyl care kits that include a couple brushes and some cleaning fluid. Plastic outer sleeves to preserve the integrity of your records are always nice as well.
Redscroll Shirts! We have them in size small-xxl. We also carry a variety of band shirts.
Posters! We carry a variety of posters of bands (Past Manic Screen Printed Show Posters and glossy band posters).
Noise boxes: We have modified Gristleisms for weirdos (noise and experimental folks who like to play with gadgets, basically - I entirely empathize with this, btw). We also have the more subtle Buddha Boxes - including (in this update) the latest model, the FM3 Buddha Machine III.
And, of course, Gift Certicates are always available - in any denomination you desire.
Onto the update... Music!
LPs & 12"s (A bunch of last week's update snuck onto this - I'm leaving it :) )

NYC Punk + Underground Record Fair
NYC Punk + Underground Record Fair
Josh, Brian (Iron Hand), and I (Rick) will be at Southpaw in Brooklyn, NY tomorrow from 10AM until 4:30PM selling (and buying) records. If you're in the area or if you have nothing going on then make it out. The dealer list looks incredible (it is on the Facebook Event Page linked below the flier). Every great dealer in the area that I can think of will be there.
Sean will be at the shop in Wallingford all day - wish him a belated happy birthday (it's today). The shop's used section might be a bit slimmer than you might want for the day (we're bringing 3 tables worth of records) so excuse that. We'll bring back what's left and whatever deals we find at the fair Saturday night and we'll have it ready for sale on Sunday at the shop.

Holiday Toy Drive
HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE
for children with special needs
We are participating in a local toy drive. If you've been in the store lately you'd have noticed this box up front:
You have until December 18th to bring some joy to a child by dropping off a toy here or at any of the other drop-off locations around New Haven.
(Devil's Gear Bike Shop, Romeo & Cesare's, Fuel Coffee, Miya's Sushi)
"The toys will help children with many different disabilities that include autism, down syndrome, global developmental delays, Hypotonia, and a number of other chromosomal anomalies. (all of the children that are receiving the toys are also in lower socio-economic levels).
There are are a number of toys that are beneficial these include puzzles, nesting cups, blocks, books (simple picture books), cause/effect toys (pop ups, lights/sounds) cars, trucks, dolls. Here are a few links to for ideas: beyondplay.com and funandfunction.com. Toys R Us also is really great at labeling the toys. They have a catalog for differently abled kids."
"The holiday toy drive for children with special needs focuses on children with special needs between the ages of 0-3. Our goal is to collect new and gently used, unwrapped toys during the holiday season. These toys are then distributed just before Christmas to needy children with special needs in our community. We want all children to experience the magic and joy of the holiday season regardless of their abilities or socioeconomic status.
Providing the children with toys that are appropriate for their skill level and using them to teach new skills is also very important. Often times the toys needed to practice a skill are financially unavailable to the family, which is why the toy drive is so important in helping to serve as two functions: first as a holiday gift and second as a necessary therapeutic tool.

New Stickers, Shirts & Hoodies
We have a new sticker design. That design is also on shirts and hoodies.
The above image is the sticker design - the shirt and hoodie are basically the same, but do not have the tag line and web address. Pictures to follow.
The T-Shirts are white ink on black Alternative Apparel Vintage Soft (100% Egyptian Cotton). They are incredibly soft - softer even than the American Apparel shirts we've had in the past. Seriously. Soft. Comfortable. We have adult sizes Small-XXL. They are $12 each in store.
The pull-over hoodies are also white on black. They are on Gildan 50/50 (half cotton, half polyester). They are also pretty darn soft for a hoodie. They are warm and nice. We have these also in adult sizes Small-XXL. These are $25 each in store. Shogun Shop did the screening on all of these (The T's and the Hoodies) and they came out great.
Once again we had Contagious Graphics print stickers for us (if you ever use them please use us as a reference). They are sweet vinyl stickers and are free at the shop (if you order anything from us ask for one and we'll stick it in with your order).
If you want to mail order these please do. Ordering buttons below these handsomely modeled pictures below.
Finally, if you are wondering the significance of all these icons or runes, well, I'll give you an idea right now. First of all, this was inspired by and is a tribute to one of my favorite record labels - one that uses a series of runes above their name (ask me [Rick] and I'll tell you right off the bat - guess and I'll give you a free sticker [yes, they are free anyway - jokes]). Todd Rogers (Teaessare Design) once again made our vision a reality. He is the best and if you need some design work we definitely recommend him.
All right, the breakdown from left to right (furthest left being #1 and furthest right being #6). 1. Josh loves Integrity - this is a rune often used by Dwid (Integrity). That's about as simple as that. 2. File sharing kills music symbol. This symbol is a take on the home-taping is killing music of the '80s. It's a bit tongue-in-cheek, actually. It's a ridiculous notion to take at face value, but the imagery speaks to our business just the same. We don't sell files. 3. This is the Om symbol. Music is meditative. Mantra, take me home I trust you (Shelter lyrics). 4. You might and maybe should recognize this owl from our fliers and previous shirt design (double thanks to Todd Rogers for this). 5. I (Rick) love KLF - this is a two dimensional take on the three dimensional Justified Ancients of Mu Mu symbol. 6. This is a record. You know that. We sell 'em. We love 'em.
Of course, you can just take these at face value too. Make up a story of your own. We don't mind. #1 is representative of Robert Johnson and the crossroads and the very roots of rock and roll. #2 is a robot with a patch over it's left eye. #3 is the ancient rune for happiness. #4 is the image of the owl from the original Clash of the Titans movie. #5 is King Tut's original design for his final resting place - he actually designed the first boom box centuries before they existed (nothing new for them crazy Egyptians - also the reason we used the Egyptian cotton shirts). #6 is still a CD that looks a lot like a record. We sell 'em. We love 'em.
Now you try.

Sunday, December 19, 2010
6PM
All Ages
No Door Charge
If you were wondering what the next event might be at the shop you need wonder no more. Loud jams coming through.
Ultrabunny has been pumping the volume to the maximum for the duration of a couple decades. They have numerous releases - one of their most recent is part of the auspicious Outer Bounds Of Sound series on Noiseville records. We even carry that one and another released on Mr. Tent's (pictured in bunny mask) label - TPOS (you very well might also know Mr. Tent as Malcolm from Trash American Style).
Myty Konkeror recently released an album on North Branford's Twin Lakes Records. I find it to be a noisy moody record in the most positive of ways. You can listen to it here: http://www.twinlakesrecords.com/i-miss-the-future/
[Yes, we carry this release too!]
[Yes, we carry this release too!]
Ferocious Fucking Teeth play heavy stony jams. They are out of New London, CT which sometimes feels like the other end of the universe, but I assure you these dudes are actually from the other end of the universe (Wait, what? Yea.). I have yet to actually see this band and am looking forward to it.
Come out and support a bunch of CT bands that don't play this neck of the Nutmeg very often.

Blackout Sale Day 1 Recap
Blackout Sale Day 1 Recap
Thanks to all who came and to any who wished to, but couldn't. There are 2 more days left. We'll be open Saturday and Sunday 10AM-9PM. Day 1 was great. Friends all around us in every direction. The day went by so fast. I took some pics and vids and put it in a quick video I edited fast. It's fun. At the end of the night Brass Caskets opened up the secret show. Stab You In The Head And Eat Your Face Off did a set of Cro-Mags songs. Iron Hand closed it all out with 8 early covers from Hatebreed. Fun times. I went on to take a picture of some friends taking pictures and lots of talk about the hot dance craze in the south inspired by Weekend At Berney's. Possible video coming soon (probably after the weekend ends) of some fun fun Berney dancing. Movin' like Berney.

17th of November 2010 Update
17th of November Update of New and Key Restocked Items
at Redscroll Records
Hey, here's a fun idea - NO ALPHEBETIZATION FOR THE LPs TODAY! Look at it all!
A note about Black Friday/Record Store Day items: It is looking like some of it might not be ready in time for Black Friday (delays in pressing & distribution). Yikes. We'll let you know what does arrive when we get it all though. I'll even alphebetize that one.
And don't forget, that we have the sale that starts on Black Friday (next week) and we have an event in the viscinity on this Bleak Friday (this week - check the blog post about 3 posts back "Bleak November").

RUNDOWN:
Author & Punisher (San Diego, CA)
I am a mechanical engineer, sculptor, musician and creator of the Drone Machines and now Dub Machines industrial sound controllers. Alongside fabricating machines and composing sound for performance, I work at the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research as a mechanical engineer and the Center for Research and Computing in the Arts at UCSD as a researcher in media arts.
Drone/Dub Machines are custom made machines fabricated from raw materials and utilizing open source circuitry. The devices draw heavily on aspects of industrial automation, robotics and mechanical tools and devices, focusing on the eroticism of interaction with machine. The machines require significant force from the performer, aligning he or she with the plodding drone and doom influenced sounds that are created.
I have performed and shown these machines extensively in festivals and exhibitions since 2007 in the United States and abroad, performing under the name Author & Punisher. I released my third album, yet first sculpture/art based album entitled “Drone Machines” in 2010 on Heart & Crossbone Records out of Tel-Aviv.
I will be performing all new material with the newest machines I call Dub Machines. All material is played on these machines live with no prerecorded sequences. This material will be released in the Spring of 2011 on a vinyl only release.
Batillus (New York, NY)
With songs that move from bristling blast beats to subterranean crawls, Batillus (buh-TILL-us) cohere the extremes of heavy music into a surge of massive riffing, rolling over and descending on the listener with the force and intensity of a sudden storm. The New Yorker describes Batillus as “a sludgy four-piece that slows monstrous Black Sabbath riffs to a crawl to produce highly textured compositions of droning doom-metal,” and Revolver calls their music “beyond-atmospheric blackened doom.”
Originally conceived in 2007 as an instrumental trio, Batillus’ lineup expanded in 2009 to add vocals and synth to the dynamic range of their music. The band’s writing process is thoroughly democratic; each member contributes his own ideas to the whole, which allows for stylistic range and intricacy in the songs and their parts. No individual is more important than another, and the results are truly a representation of the band’s collective vision.
Theologian (New York, NY)
“Bartow consistently plays rougher than, say, Lustmord or Coil (darker, too -the title track finds him deploying textures corrosive enough for power electronics), hardly surprising given his former life as dimension-hopping electrobrutalist Navicon Torture Technologies. As Theologian, he brings way more nuance to the dissecting table without sacrificing anything in the way of decidedly alien – and utterly welcome – responses to the vicissitudes of mundane existence.” – Rod Smith, DECIBEL #72
Theologian’s set will be composed of industrial/synth/drone that hangs somewhere in the darkened shaft between love and death. All new material will be tested for the first time, as a combination of preparation and improvisation takes both the audience and the performer to uncharted regions. This will be the third live appearance of Theologian.
Master of Pussy (Providence, RI)
Master of Pussy is members of: Hard Drug, Vincebus Eruptum, Necronomitron, Lasers, Bellows, In Heat, Bermuda, A29 D3,Throne of Blood, USAISAMONSTER, Meteorfoot, Zombifying Venom, Lazy Magnet, Jesus Crust, Sawzall, Bonedust, VVLTVRE, Assembly of the Light, Swans Cover Band
Cowards (New York, NY) Nick Pace & Jesse Allen (You may remember them from such acts as Cathode Terror Secretion and Diaphragm - if not, go check those out right now.) ""Overall, Cowards is a cool new take on the idea of an Industrial/Power Electronics band, the work of Cowards is incredibly impressive. This is a group that already has and soon will be setting standards in this genre, and this is a completely killer example of that fat. Very enjoyable and well-put together release, exceedingly thoughtful and tasteful material here. A band that is not to be missed, hopefully they will be asked to do some soundtrack work very soon. You will be hearing more from this band in the future." -http://www.heathenharvest.com
cowards at enemy (chicago) october 22nd, 2009 from acid marshmallow on Vimeo.
Work/Death (Providence, RI) "...consisting of a simply gorgeous mix of field recordings, mysterious sound sculpture-lineage motorized chug, washed-out mechanical hum, and subtle, yet unapologetically tonal compositions, scøtt has achieved a true, vital hybrid of sonic arts union-style process music, “traditional” musique concrète, and deep, emotionally-charged chord-wrangling that never comes across as cloying or trite, keeping things grimy & gauzy, always wrapped in a patina of post-noise sensibilities..." - Keith Fullerton Whitman
