U.S. Girls GEM

(FatCat)
Despite this glitzy glam-pop project’s plural, American-sounding name, Toronto-born Meghan Remy is essentially the sole member, taking command with her striking, high-pitched singing voice. On her fourth album, she clearly demonstrates her interest in the music of both indie rock and girl groups, creating what sounds like a curious re-imagining of the emotions experienced while living the high life. The sound mostly has a somewhat dark aura throughout, kicking off with the cavernous, synth-driven “Another Color,” showcasing her loud, emotional and echoed voice. The driving, ever-bedazzled “Work From Home” is a unique standout in its memorable simplicity; after it ends, it jumps into a cover of Brock Robinson’s “Jack,” which is likely the most cool-flowing, head-bobbing song about Jack the Ripper to exist. Remy shows her versatility by tackling country-rock as well, successfully putting an interesting spin on Billy Joe Royal’s “Down In The Boondocks.”
