Discordance Axis JOUHOU
(Hydra Head)
The grind metal band from NYC that had a love affair with Japanese grind and then absolutely perfected it (in the late 1990s). Noise interludes and complete aural assaults. Members have gone on to other grind bands (Gridlink, Hayaino Daisuke) and came out of one of the best death grind bands to have existed (Human Remains). The most prolific member was the drummer, Dave Witte who has gone on to be in about a mega-quadrillion bands (Y'know, that huge one.... uhhh Hope Collapse was it or... uhhhh.... Municipal something err...). D.A. is a precise beating from a galactic mind-space. This is the reissue put out by Hydra Head on 2LPs and it is what one might call a right proper reissue and I'd say a better representation than the original vinyl pressing.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra II
(Jagjaguwar)
On their sophomore album, this Oregon/New Zealand trio serves up a bigger helping of 60s acid trip-infused funk/psych/indie rock, drawing influences from artists including The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix. Their lo-fi music digs deeper than an LSD-spiked run through a meadow, though, with the bittersweet opener suggesting that sometimes it’s easiest to retreat “From The Sun,” even though “isolation can put a gun in your hand.” The theme continues in the refreshing, brighter-sounding first single, yearning about the solace and comfort that could come about by being able to “Swim And Sleep (Like A Shark).” “The Opposite of Afternoon” is an easy favorite, with its delicious, very cool-sounding tremolo and reverb effects, as well as intriguing metaphors (“oil is in the cradle of its golden moon tonight...”) The low-key guitar tapestry “Monki” is interesting as well, utilizing several different twanging effects throughout its chilled-out seven minutes.
