We are very excited to announce that on April 12th we'll have been open for 6 years! Thanks to everyone who has ever walked through our doors - you're the best! 

The sale will start on April 15th (the Monday before Record Store Day - which is the 20th of April) and will go through the end of regular hours on Sunday, April 21st (the day after Record Store Day).  The big discount for the week is 15% Off Everything (not combinable with any other discounts or offers). All used CDs will be a mere one dollar ($1!) and used LPs that are marked $3 or less will also be $1.  



For Record Store Day (April 20th, 2013) we'll be open special hours - from 9AM-10PM.  We will have many many special releases (if you've come here during RSD in the past you know what to expect - a literal metric ton of exclusive LPs, 7"s and what-have-you related musical merchandise).  We'll have goodies bags filled with appropriate swag from record labels and bands and related businesses and fun people both near and far.  We've got our own special promotional item coming too. We'll be setting up the tent in back again - it will be filled with tables of 7"s for easy browsing.  The line will be forming at the tent in back as well.  To make your wait a little more fun we've lined up some food trucks. Bring cash for food from Hardcore Sweet Cupcakes and G-Monkey Mobile (from the owners of G-Zen).  They'll both be here for the opening at 9AM for a few hours. Get here early, eat, buy music and generally have a good time. [Pssst, the head-in-hole MJ & ET standee will be out for all the photo ops you can handle.]

WASSSSSSSSSUP / WIN A PAIR OF TIX TO SEE DAVE GROHL'S DOCUMENTARY ABOUT SOUND CITY STUDIOS @ REAL ART WAYS

Hi!  My name is Ross and in the coming months I will be contributing some blog posts and other assorted content for Redscroll.  

My first order of business is to tell you about a last minute giveaway the shop is doing to help promote NY-based Variance Films new documentary, entitled "Sound City", directed by none other than rock master general Dave Grohl.  Up for grabs are two (2) pairs of tickets to see the film at Real Art Ways in beautiful Hartford, CT this Thursday, January 31st.  One pair for a showing at 7:00 PM, and the other for 9:30 PM.  

All you have to do is be the first person to respond/retweet/reblog/comment on this here entry, and a fresh pair of tix will be yours!

And here is a list of reasons I personally think you should be interested in seeing this film:

1.  Dave Grohl rocks.  You might not personally be a fan of his work, but it's pretty indisputable the dude can rock.  

2.  Sound City Studio's, located in the Van Nuys section of Los Angeles, CA, is where they recorded Nevermind.  You know that song "Breed"?  That track is siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick!

3.  Neil Young recorded After The Gold Rush at Sound City.  Neil rules, duh!

4.  I know there's like ton's of other people as obsessed with Fleetwood Mac as my little cousin.  Well, the Mac laid down BOTH their Self-Titled and Rumours LP's at Sound City, not to mention the Buckingham Nicks jammer.      

5.  Tom Petty is a hard rocking mofo.  Dude recorded ton's of devastating LP's up in this joint (to me that's like every LP he's ever done).  Peep this melancholic yet fist-pumpable track featuring your girl Stevie Nicks from his 2nd LP recorded at Sound City.

6.  I could go on, and on, and on, and on, but just read through this studio discography!!!!  I'm sure there is something recorded at Sound City you have probably ripped at max volume at least once in your life.  

7.  As you can gather from the official trailer, the film is basically a bunch of famous rockers (some with more inflated egos then others), shootin' the breeze about this very special place, and particularly the analog equipment and mindset that Sound City stood for.  Though I by no means decry the advent of digital recording technology, the film brings up important ideas regarding ethics in sound recording, and is a testament to the art of analog methods.  

Intrigued?  Then get sharing!  The screening on Thursday is part of a special nationwide one-night-only event (the film has previously only been shown at that famous celeb film fest held last week).  If you win a pair of the tickets, it is crucial that you note the specific time (either 7 PM or 9:30 PM) on your free pass, and get to Real Art Ways half an hour before the show time to claim your seats.  Says our connect at Variance - "It looks like these screenings are going to sell out and we can't guarantee choice seats for the winners or that the theater will keep seats vacant once the show is starting."  But hey, you'll be saving between $9-20, so play by their rules, umkay?  

In case you don't win any tickets, you should still go check out this film at Real Art Ways at either listed time, or if you are closer to the New Haven area, head to Criterion Cinemas where they will be doing a 7:30 PM showing.

The Indian giant squirrel is well documented. The American red squirrel is also very well documented. In the family Sciuridae there are myriad well documented species. There is one glaring omission: the American Giant Red Squirrel.

Here is an artists interpretation of the mythological Megared Squirrel:

I cannot stress enough how mythological this thing is. Megared squirrels are not real.  The Giant American Red Squirrel is not this big. Look at that thing. That's ridiculous. Do you think it could hide if it were actually that big?! Seriously, jeez!

The Giant American Red Squirrel is giant comparatively to other squirrels (of course), but not mythologically giant in comparison to large buildings.  Let's use record store terms to put it in perspective.  If a Giant American Red Squirrel were to be compared to a 12" record its head would be just smaller than one (basically like a human's, but y'know a squirrel). 

American Giant Red Squirrels generally live by large bodies of water, are nocturnal and proportionally more skittish than their smaller counterparts (which makes them hard to photograph or study).

While a small squirrel must drink some water to keep itself healthy a giant one must drink more water (thus living by large bodies of water; fresh water - did I forget to mention that the first time, well, it's large bodies of fresh water they live by).

Perhaps you've caught wind of the buzz surrounding Iceage, a young rock and roll group out of Denmark.  Perhaps you read the review I did of it here.  Perhaps you're well aware of this band and have already made your mind up.  And you're probably right, they are great.  I was very excited to be able to host them on a show here in CT (one of not very many stateside shows - I think there's going to be 6 total for this tour).  If you haven't yet made up your mind on Iceage you can check out the New Brigade LP on Dais (now on it's 2nd pressing).  We have some at the shop (1st press went fast so be quick about it).  If you need a fix right now, then check this video:

Female is a local progenitor of the minimal wave sound. It's quite good (and yes, Female is a moniker). Female has been very prolific and very under-the-radar. They've got many albums worth of material (66 tracks) available for free at the Free Music Archive.  Dig around on that for a while.  It should keep you busy for a minute. 

Medication and The Men have rounded out the bill.  Coincidentally enough they both have recently released LPs on Sacred Bones Records.  I swear it's a coincidence.  Good label.  You should check out their wares (uhh, we sell them).

We talked to our friends in Iron Hand a good while back about doing this 7" with them.  The time is finally here.  A 7" record with four righteous tracks of crust d-beat loving hardcore.  The band features current and past members of They And The Children, Estrogen Highs and Last Words (as well as a bunch of others).  Keep up to date with Iron Hand live dates on their blog. 

Iron Hand is a crust/d-beat hardcore band from Connecticut incorporating past and contemporary influences within the genre, such as Discharge, State Of Fear, and Crow.  Lyrically, the band addresses its sociopolitical criticisms while also taking opportunity to address personal introspection.




The most immediate and notable show is their record release.  It's happening April 16, 2011 (which happens to be Record Store Day).

There is a better than good chance you have not heard of Avant! Records or its offerings.  Well, let's correct that.  Avant! is a fine small label out of Italy up to its eighth release (more on that to follow).  Music on the label tends to be dark and fuzzy (sometimes garage-like and sometimes folkish).  The first four releases are all sold out, unfortunately.  The latest four releases are all available in our store now.
