Lemonade Diver

(True Panther Sounds)
Formed in San Francisco eight years ago before relocating to Brooklyn, this electronic trio has crafted a sensual, chilled-out sound that includes elements of dance, pop, R&B and freestyle. The layers of ethereal vocals, scattered beats and cool-as-ice synth make their sophomore full-length sound like a synthesis of the late 80s, early 90s and today. Opening track “Infinite Style” starts out on a moody note with a siren and drum machine before giving way to the bright, luxurious-sounding synth. “Big Changes” uses a punching metallic synth hook and distant, resonant vocals to sound like an R&B/dance tune that’d be played alongside Crystal Waters and Madonna. It’s certainly a refreshing, summery-sounding experience overall.

Endless Boogie Long Island

(No Quarter)
This New York band sounds like they’re straight out of a 70s-era biker bar, reminding me of ZZ Top and AC/DC with their heavy blues rock (treading into psychedelic at some points) chugging along for lengthy stretches. They sound like they’ve got a lot more experience than their informal late-90s roots suggest. Thirteen-and-a-half-minute opener “The Savagist” sets the mood, with a nonstop midtempo beat setting the foundation for trippy guitar improvisation and lead singer Paul Major (a.k.a. Top Dollar’s) rough snarling. Much of the running time is devoted to instrumental improvisation, but his vocals sound awesome when they come on, especially prominent on the classic-sounding rocker “Taking Out The Trash” and wild jamming number “General Admission.” The totally tripped-out, fried guitar on “Occult Banker” makes it an easy highlight for me.

7th Of June 2013 Update of New and Key Restocked Items + Reviews
at Redscroll Records

We are still awaiting a restock of the Daft Punk "Random Access Memories" LPs. We'll let you know when we have more. I know many stores still haven't gotten their first batch yet so let's cross our fingers for this coming week.

You might also notice that I'm continuing to slowly take inventory of our left over RSD13 items. And I'm so zany that I didn't alphabetize the sections where we got a small amount of titles. Wacky.

Coliseum Sister Faith

(Temporary Residence Ltd.)
Since forming a decade ago and going through several lineup changes, this Louisville trio has progressed from blistering hardcore to a more melodic (but still heavily rocking) alt-rock sound. Coliseum also incorporate elements of sludge and stoner metal, complete with desert rock that makes me imagine Queens of the Stone Age if they utilized a driving energy and vocal style similar to that of The Bronx. They do a great job of exploring styles from traditionally chugging metal (“Under The Blood Of The Moon”) to the storming riff-based “Black Magic Punks” (complete with whispers from just one of the album’s guest musicians: Boris singer/guitarist Wata.) One of my favorites is “Fuzzbang,” closing the album with an unexpectedly fun and infectious stoner/sludge sound (comparable to that of Torche) that melts into an almost shoegaze-style blur toward the end.

Where We Live

In lieu of a review from me, Rick, today I'm going to direct you to the podcast of Where We Live (WNPR, Hartford) that I appeared on today with Anthony of The Needle Drop. Check it out. We talk about a lot of new music (though we had so much more in our back pockets - you can only fit so much into an hour).

Code Orange Kids  Love Is Love // Return To Dust
(Deathwish)
Citing comparisons to Converge, Gallows and Ceremony (I’ll add American Nightmare, Weekend Nachos and Unsane as well,) this Pennsylvania band leans heavily toward the “hardcore” aspect of hardcore punk with sludge metal thrown in the mix too. Three of Code Orange Kids’ four members delivering most of the screamed vocals on these abruptly shifting songs, touching on themes of emptiness, drug abuse and death (from “Choices (Love Is Love)”: “there are no mistakes / only decisions.”) The shrieking and snarling guitars, concrete-thick bass and frantic drums make for some very un-relaxed listening, with speed ranging everywhere from blisteringly fast to crawlingly slow. Though the intensity often simulates that of a robotic beast charging and slamming you into grinding gears, there are a handful of beautiful moments: “Colors (Into Nothing)” and “Calm // Breathe” cool down the rage a bit with a contemplative sound reminiscent of post-rock and shoegaze, before shifting back into the extremity.

Ex Cops True Hallucinations

(Other Music)
On their debut full-length, this Brooklyn quintet is all about feeling good with its half hour of mellow, dream pop-tinged indie rock.  Formed as a duo in 2011, vocalists Amalie Bruun (formerly of Minks) and Brian Harding (formerly of Hymns, and also a guitarist and keyboardist) first released a short-run CD-EP and later a seven-inch featuring two of its tracks, which also made it to this album. Both “You Are a Lion, I Am a Lamb” and “The Millionaire” showcase a catchy summertime atmosphere, sounding like ethereal surf-pop that can be sunny and energetic or cool and subdued.  I personally have a strong liking for the Beach Boys-esque “Spring Break (Birthday Song;)” a driving mid-tempo acoustic number that’s about as easy-going as it gets.

Iron Reagan Worse Than Dead

(Magic Bullet/A389)
It’s no surprise that this Richmond, Virginia punk band is all about thrashing fury, as it features members from Darkest Hour and Municipal Waste (the latter of which is the most comparable to its sound.) They blaze through 19 under-two-minute songs with an intense, buzz-saw rush similar to that of crossover thrash forefathers Cro-Mags and D.R.I., incorporating elements of both punk and metal. Their targets include everyone from “religious” scammers (“I Predict the Death of Harold Camping,”) to “The Debt Collector” who leeches off people who need medical care, to lawmakers who make it too easy to maniacs to obtain weapons, with the “Two Examples” being the Virginia Tech and Aurora theater shootings. It’s fitting to have topical commentary for these uneasy times.
[Reviewer: Mark]

Pharmakon Abandon

(Sacred Bones)
Power electronics is male dominated. Pharmakon is a project of a female (Margaret Chardiet). There, that's out of the way. I have some experience with p.e. and recordings of it. Much of the time the recordings are piss poor and that is a lot of the charm ("charm") much of the time (much of the time [muchuchch ofofvvv thethethhhuhuhuu timeimeimemmmm]). Here's where this recording is different and here is perhaps why this divergence is getting so much recognition (aside from that first thing I mentioned). This recording is meticulously well produced. It's a noise record, let's understand that. It's not "Pet Sounds" or any such polished pop album. It is however not a Grey Wolves or Con-Dom or Deathpile or Anenzephalia (not even the newest one) or any number of artists' album though it does owe a debt to all of them. It's powerful and angry and noisy and honestly a bit all over the place from song to song; it's all within the p.e. spectrum mind you. It's never boring.
[Reviewer: Rick]

Youth Lagoon Wondrous Bughouse

(Fat Possum)
On his sophomore record, Boise-raised Trevor Powers once again sounds far removed from a state associated with potato fields: this time, his fuzzy, blissful and psychedelic dream-pop sounds much more colorful and busy than the mellowed-out, watching-the-clouds-go-by fantasy realm that was 2011’s The Year of Hibernation. First single “Dropla,” for example, goes straight to the playful hook and Powers’ uniquely precocious voice, repeating “you’ll never die” like a child not yet bruised by the harsh realities of life. My favorite is easily the epic five-minute “Pelican Man,” using synth, piano and drums to take off and soar with curious lyrics apparently about being haunted by past mistakes. He again uses an out-of-tune-sounding piano to its full potential in “Attic Doctor,” creating what sounds like a summer-night waltz in Toyland. It’s great that he was smart enough to expand on his sound instead of choosing to make the same thing again.

Slug Guts Playin’ in Time With the Deadbeat

(Sacred Bones)
This Australian sextet showcases a harsh, fried-out post-punk/noise-rock sound on their third album, particularly shaped by a brutal year of arrests, violence and death while on tour. Their harsh, echoed-out sound is drawn from fellow Aussie post-punk bands like The Birthday Party and feedtime, with opening track “Scum” sounding like a midnight surf jam in a rough part of town, haunted by wailing sax spirits dropping by unexpectedly. Others such as the rough pounding “Black Sports” and spooky, creeping title track further help progress the grimy-alleyway atmosphere at an exclamatory volume.

Harry Pussy One Plus One

(Palilalia)
Among the things that this Miami band stood out for during their 1992-1997 existence – in addition to their name, of course - was their distinct brand of noise/experimental rock and live shows that were viciously intense enough to induce speechlessness. Although they typically played as a rotating trio, this double-LP only collects material from the founding duo: Bill Orcutt strums the twanging guitar across unbelievably circuitous paths while Adris Hoyos pounds the drums and, though it’s quite rare on this release, sings (her voice is far closer to that of a vulture than a songbird.) It’s a raw, bracing experience for those adventurous enough to venture through a jagged, disjointed punk scrapyard. This compilation consists of twenty-four songs recorded on a Walkman during the band’s first two years; nine tracks are previously released, but renamed and re-edited by Orcutt. The tracks range from straightforward-driven insanity (“Nazi USA,” “Improbable People”) to more head-spinning guitar weirdness, such as “Bad Space” and the opening track’s mutated instrumental reimagining of The Germs’ “Forming.”

Foxygen Take The Kids Off Broadway

(Jagjaguwar)
Olympia, Washington-based vocalist Sam France and NYC guitarist/keyboardist Jonathan Rado (both 22 years old) make up this songwriting duo. The label fittingly describes their sound as the “raw, de-Wes Andersonization” of acts like The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and David Bowie: indeed, it sounds like a tapestry of rock spanning the 60s and 70s, particularly blues and psychedelia. The songs sound refreshingly free and often theatrical, created from a variety of passages: for example, standout “Make It Known” is driven by, among other things, a smooth organ, groovy guitar and horns that start off sad but flourish for the catchy, particularly anthemically-sung climax. I also enjoyed the sleepy-eyed “Why Did I Get Married?,” which made me imagine The Beatles or David Bowie gradually incorporating elements of garage rock. The longest track – the ten-minute acid trip “Teenage Alien Blues” – sounds like a dizzy recollection of continuous fragments ranging from radio-friendly blues-rock to heavily lo-fi, weird noise-coated psych-rock.
