Ipsissimus "GoatCultRites" Cassette Tape (RSR-009)

Ipsissimus "GoatCultRites" Cassette Tape (Redscroll Records 009)

Yes, you are reading that correctly. Redscroll Records is not just a store. We also occasionally release music. If you were in attendance at Monday night's EYEHATEGOD show, you now know that Connecticut's own IPSISSIMUS has signed to a very important label in the metal realm. We are very proud and fortunate to be releasing a live recording of IPSISSIMUS entitled, "GOATCULTRITES" on REDSCROLL RECORDS (RSR-009). This cassette tape was recorded during a live ritual over one year ago. It is hand-numbered and strictly limited to 100 copies (authenticated with the Redscroll Seal). Hail Satan.

"GOATCULTRITES" by IPSISSIMUS is available direct from the band or in our store for $5.  They are available postage paid for $6 (Domestic U.S. orders -> for International please email us at redscroll@gmail.com for shipping quotes).

Hopeless Visions With Rob #1 (Movie Review)

Hopeless Visions with Rob (Movie Review) #1: INVINCIBLE SHAOLIN (SHAW BROTHERS) [Funimation Entertainment]

This is the first time this Shaw Brothers movie has been released uncut in the U.S.  It also got a remastering treatment.

In the film it is a warlord's plan to pit two Shaolin schools against each other and wipe them out. The warlord goes on to frame the northerners for murders he commits.  A somewhat complicated story unfolds - a story of betrayal and revenge.

This was directed by one of my favorite directors of Asian Cinema, Chang Cheh. INVINCIBLE SHAOLIN features really aggressive acrobatic kung-fu skills and awesome training sequences.  It's got the best chest-rip-opening scene ever!  It was one of my favorites to watch on Kung-Fu Theatre when I was about 10.  It's also one of the rare times that Lu Feng (who usually plays a bad guy/antagonist) plays a good guy/protagonist.  Lu Feng also served as one of the fight choreographers.  The story line with the girls is a little weak.  It's not as epically violent as Masked Avengers or Daredevils.  Still great.  (3/4 Throwing Stars)

If you like this, check out the Five Deadly Venoms - also directed by Chang Cheh who discovered the Five Venoms (Lu Feng, Sun Chien/Phillip Kwok, Chiang Sheng, Wei Pai, and Lo Mang).  Three of them were from a famous Taiwanese opera troupe.

And, of course, this is available for purchase at Redscroll.  Check out all of my (Rob's) picks on the top shelf of the DVDs.

Beatles "Paperback Writer / Rain" 7" Vinyl Single

Tomorrow, June 8th, is the U.S. release date for The Beatles "Paperback Writer / Rain" 7" Vinyl Single.

It was originally a UK Record Store Day item. There are a very limited number of these (1000, I believe). At best, any store that wanted these got only 2. We got 2! The least amount of fun this could lead to is that whomever could make it here first could buy them. That doesn't sound all that fun at all. It would be fun for those 2 people, sure, but less fun for so many more people. More fun? What could we do to make that happen? A raffle? Yes!

A raffle for these is going to take place! That way we can charge you and make a mint off these little round things, right? NO WAY, DUDE! This raffle is going to be FREE! No catch. You don't have to purchase anything at all. You don't have to buy a raffle ticket. You just have to enter and cross your fingers. (Actually, the one catch is that you actually do have to come into the store to fill out the form. I almost forgot to mention that - no online entries, sorry)

The raffle entry will go on for 2 weeks. At 7PM on Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010, we will pick a winner at random. You don't have to be present for the picking - entries will have contact information on them so we can reach you. However, coming in at that time might make it more exciting for all.

Sell Us Your Media

Redscroll Records is always buying used vinyl, CDs, DVDs, and books of interest! We pay cash, but we'll give you a bit more in store credit.

Now that we've rearranged the store and opened up a whole new room for just used records we have a wealth of space. We've all got stuff on our shelves that we bought checked out once, and will never pick up again. I'm talking about things that you have no sentimental attachment to. Maybe you have a family member who is just holding onto things because they don't want to spend the time to get rid of them - offer your time to come to our store with that uncle's 70s rock collection, mom's old Aleister Crowley books, your cousin's ska CDs, ... Spring is traditionally the time for cleaning so why not go through your collection and weed out anything you haven't listened to in a couple years?  Why not?  I will tell you why you should.

It is beneficial for us, but it is also beneficial for you. Tag Sales, Craigslist, Ebay, ... all those things take up a lot of your time.  Time is money, right?  We will pay you on the spot. Spin yarn into gold. One man's trash is another man's treasure (gender neutral usage).

Community!

When you go to a record store with a great used section it is because of a few factors.  Perhaps, the purveyors of said store found a magic beanstalk which they climbed and defeated a giant who had a great collection of discs (that were probably tiny to him).  More likely is that they've built a niche within the community.  They've sold and bought records to people with respectable tastes.  We have a respect for the people that come into our store and that is why we are writing this now.  Sell us your used media so that another may easily find it.  We all win!
