True story: I (Rick) went to the Pacific Northwest a couple weeks ago and visited a few spots specifically because of their appearance in Twin Peaks. This week we got in the Eraserhead OST LP put out by Sacred Bones Records. These things are going fast (Sacred Bones already announced a second pressing). Get weird David Lynch style (get it quick though or wait until the 2nd press). [Update: we ran out of these and have an order in currently for the second pressing - we'll let you know when they're in.]


Flower Travellin' Band. Heavy psych that really should be mentioned in the same breath as many of their more well known western contemporaries. This live footage backs that statement fully.


We recently got in some used Pig Destroyer LPs ("Prowler In The Yard" & "Terrifyer"). It got me thinking about how excited I am to see these grindcore legends at Maryland Deathfest next year!


I bought a collection of cool classic rock LPs this morning (Alice Cooper, Bowie, The Who) from a guy who told me his son was Kurt Feldman who plays drums for The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (As well as in The Depreciation Guild and The Ic e Choir). When I told him I carried their records in my store he got real excited! It was nice watching someone have a proud dad moment. POBPAH play summery feel good indie pop jams. It's no secret that I'm a huge Integrity fan & collector. So today is pretty awesome because, the repress (originally on Victory) of their 1995 release,"Systems Overload" on Organized Crime Records arrived. Dwid & Co. have built a 20+ year career out out of making dark and explosive metal influenced hardcore. Check out the video for the title track. Mosh your bedroom. (Josh)


The Codeine discography got the deluxe reissue treatment from the Numero Group recently - done extensively and well. 3 records with plenty of stuffing! (It's like Thanksgiving.)


"Vee Vee" was the first of the Archers of Loaf CDs/LPs to get the remaster and reissue treatment. We've gotten in a couple more since then (still have "Vee Vee" of course, but now also "White Trash Heroes" and "All The Nations Airports").

I've touted the talents of Phemale (formerly known as Female, but changed slightly in deference and respect to the techno artist veteran that also goes by Female) before. Phemale is a New Haven pop artist that could easily be lumped in with much of the revival of the cold minimal sound. This latest effort is perhaps the least minimal (far from Phil Spector however), but certainly not the least cold (one could argue, I suppose). These songs are good. They'll be out on cassette soon as well if you don't mind a little wait and that's your prefered format. Iranian-born and London-based electronic artist Leila Arab has been active since 1993, when she got her start working with Björk. Leila began releasing her own records five years later, and her newest full-length is as energetic as it is dark and experimental, with loads of vibrating laser synth, bleeps, bloops and buzzes amidst a wide variety of thick, scattered and downright challenging-to-describe beats. Personally, it reminded me the most of stuff like Daft Punk and Digitalism (though with a lot more experimentation at points.) The songs range from irresistibly kinetic and danceable (“Activate I,” “Welcome To Your Life”) to druggy and nebulous (“In Consideration”) and even outright rhythmic noise that reminds me of Merzbow’s Merzbeat album (“Interlace.”) Her solo instrumental tracks stand great on their own, but American-born and Berlin-based performance artist Mt. Sims adds even more scope by lending his spacey, echoed voice to six tracks.

Our budz in Manic Productions announced a Sunn O))) (pronounced like the amps of the same name, btw) show recently and tickets have just gone on sale (we have them here for no service charge - as per usual with Manic shows). Check this video of them playing in a church (A Big Church! - but not so big that it needs to be entirely caps locked) in Belgium. The event listing can be found here. It's Manic's second show with Sunn O))) and if it's as memorable (and good) as the first you won't want to miss it.

"Let The Right One In" (Swedish film not to be confused with "Let Me In", the American remake) was my favorite movie of the last 5 years. The film is the perfect balance of horror & love, accentuated by the beautifully dark atmosphere created in Johan Soderqvist's score. Recently, we got LPs of that score on Death Waltz Recording Co. Unfortunately, the song "Kvar I Min Bil" by Per Gessle is not featured.


Tonight, The Arc Agency has set up a sweet six band hardcore show in Milford consisting of three newer Deathwish Inc. bands (Punch, Living Eyes, & Oathbreaker) and three locals (Cold Snap, Hunger Strike, & Loach). I am most interested in wa tching Oathbreaker who play tight, gritty hardcore fused tastefully with elements of speed, doom, & black metal. They're here all the way from Belgium so make sure to check out their merch table!


The Shlohmo album LP "Bad Vibes" was on my (Rick's) best of 2011 list and it is still in my steady rotation especially on days/daze when I'm feeling a little spaced out (everyday). Solid laid back beats and atmospheres (honestly, more like good laid back vibes).


There is not one truth on CNN. Earlier today CNN had a story related to the Wisconsin shooting. They listed a bunch of white power bands. They included Hatebreed (very mistakenly). Here they are 17 years ago and looking it (straight off a VHS tape).

Named after Maryland’s state tree (which lived for centuries before being destroyed in a 2002 thunderstorm,) this Baltimore duo’s dreamy indie-folk transcends the image of just two people performing. Jenn Wasner handles the sensual lead vocals and electric or acoustic guitar, while Andy Stack does back-up vocals, drums and keyboards (often simultaneously, thanks to some creativity.) Their room-filling sound is luminous like streetlights competing with the darkness of night. The title track, for example, is a gorgeously somber lament with moving lyrics about loneliness (“I'm perfectly able to hold my own hand / but I still can't kiss my own neck.”) My favorite tracks included that one and “Hot As Day,” which don’t hesitate to drift into sequences of loud, shimmering shoegaze that remains rooted in the memorable melodies and intriguing lyrics (“when the days run long and late / darkness gives me pause while I lie awake.”)

The Chap We Are Nobody

It’s easy to classify this London five-piece as electro-pop, with their tight synth-driven melodies and subdued vocals. Apparently it’s a big transition from their previous work’s more prankster-oriented nature: though their synthesized tunes are arranged in a poppy and cozy manner, their lyrical themes include disillusionment and ennui. Right from the playful opening track, the vocalists cite the “Rhythm King” for not only helping them not only escape from darkness, but also find their hearts. The title track shines amidst its curious bleakness (“leave you all behind / paying for my crime / see me now / now you don’t.”) It’s an interesting juxtaposition of energy and controlled frustration. My favorite was “Hands Free,” which relies on mantra-like singing that demands surrender and getting one’s life back - or death - backed by punk-infused guitar chords and cymbal-crashing.

Canadian experimental/electronic/pop duo, Crystal Castles have been around since 2004. For the last couple of years I've had both self-titled LPs in heavy rotation. Alice Glass has the vocal styling of a deranged cat...but I love it. Check out the video for "Baptism."


Manic Productions announced this morning that they would be bringing Japanese post-rock giants Mono back to CT(10/26 at The Space)! I was first blown away by Mono in 2003 when I caught their set by chance in a church basement in North Haven where they were opening for The Gloria Record.


Got a bunch of the Blur reissues in this past week. It was always weird that their biggest US hit ("Song 2" y' know, the WOOHOO! song) wasn't representative of the band at all (sort of like if you only know Radiohead as that band that did "Creep").


We recently got in a couple copies of Mercyful Fate - Denying Christ In Holland LP box set. It's recordings of two really early shows from from around Holland, and include a lot of great banter from King Diamond between songs. There have been some rumors circulating recently about some King Diamond shows happening in the US, which will hopefully come to light soon.


Psychedelic noise rockers, A Place To Bury Strangers are playing at The Space tonight (this was on Monday) thanks to our friends Manic Productions. Check out this video for "You Are The One" off their latest full length, "Worship."


Quicksand recently played in California at one of the 25th Anniversary shows for Revelation Records. They're also playing towards the end of August in NYC (heads up - check the internet search machines for exactly where and when). "Slip" is being reissued on LP and we'll have some of those in a couple months when they're out as well. (Those tickets sold out fast and we didn't get a one. Crossing fingers that another show in perhaps a bigger venue gets added.)


If you like Birthday Party like Slug Guts like Birthday Party then get infected by this whole album starting with this track like I have. Scrawling rock goodness.

Luke Temple – Don’t Act Like You Don’t Care

Also known for performing under the moniker Here We Go Magic, Temple is a Salem, Massachusetts-born singer-songwriter/guitarist who creates both colorful visual art and acoustic folk-pop. He’s clearly experienced with both his instrument and falsetto voice, whether he’s backed by up to five other musicians (synth, piano, drums, etc.) mostly in the first half, or his more reserved, primarily-solo ballads on the second half. The lo-fi, rustic sound fits excellently: I enjoyed the energy that the album kicks off with, particularly the fun, jingling bell-driven “In The Open” and celebratory, country-tinged centerpiece “Ophelia.” One of his most unique moments is with “You Belong To Heaven;” a romantic ballad that, in addition to his guitar and thoughtful-sounding voice, uses a light, nuanced piano and faint recording hiss that helps him sound strikingly like an early crooner.

Have you ever had to talk a friend out of dancing with his mom to this song at his wedding? I have!

These Brooklyn (by way of Florida) post punkers first put this song out in 2010 (7" on Slumberland) and it then appeared on their full length the following year (also on Slumberland and followed by an EP on Sacred Bones Records). Solid Joy Division channeling.

Two years before this At The Gates performance, the singer's other band, Disfear played at the American Legion down the street from here with Stabyou... & Phobia. That show was great too, but I don't think anyone taped it.

Full Of Hell was one of the most impressive hardcore bands I saw live in the last year. The noise elements are great buildups for the brutally fast, hardcore assault these guys unleash.  

Bad Brains are one of the most important bands in rock history. Please take an hour sometime in the near future and watch this video in it's entirety. It's crazy to me that this took place years before I was even born.

In the early 2000's when "screamo" was exploding, Alone Records was releasing many of the more popular bands in the genre, Usurp Synapse, Jeromes Dream, Joshua Fit For Battle, etc... Of those, The Saddest Landscape is the only band that has forged ahead, crafting new music and gaining a world-wide fan base. In 2012 they released, "After The Lights" on Topshelf Records. This video is for the first song off that album, "In Love With The Sound".

Willis Earl Beal – Acousmatic Sorcery

In addition to obviously sharing a word in each name, it’s easy to draw comparisons between Beal and the late Wesley Willis: both are warm-natured, creative personalities from Chicago, where they never let their especially low-income realities get in the way of their music and art (Beal even openly shares his address and phone number for anyone who wants a drawing made or a song sung for him or her.) With pretty much just his bellowing voice and a few found objects (a standard-sounding acoustic guitar, something that sounds like a tweaked music box, some unidentified clinking and clanking items, etc.,) Beal has created an endearing sound that’d only be ruined if it were polished. He proves his versatility with several styles such as gritty blues crooning (“Take Me Away”) and ambitious, thoughtful rapping (“Ghost Robot.”) He shines the brightest, however, on his intimate acoustic ballads: his personal, calmly delivered lyrics on tracks like “Evening’s Kiss” and “Monotony” really do sound like they’re coming straight from the heart.

Tanlines – Mixed Emotions

I’ve always enjoyed the comfortable, lush sounds of 80s synth-pop, so this Brooklyn duo’s summery, danceable tunes feel right at home for me. It’s no surprise that they cite their childhood bands (such as New Order) as influences, with the result sounding like a fresh, organic take on the style. Vocalist-guitarist-keyboardist Eric Emm’s solid baritone stands out: he developed a more natural, spirited and thoughtful technique after he and Jesse Cohen (drums, keyboards, bass) were evicted from their studio. It’s fitting to hear such a voice in tracks like the tidal ambience-washed opener “Brothers” and the island-flavored “Yes Way” and “Real Life,” the latter of which has the happy synth buoying a steel drum rhythm. The most dream-like track “Abby” drifts through a synthesized nebula with its interestingly repeated lyrics (“I don’t want to do any more than you / even though I fall behind…”)
